What to See around Lamai Town Center Koh Samui, Thailand.
During my visit to Koh Samui Island recently there was so much, I wanted to do and see but as always time gets away on you, and been monsoon period restricted me from seeing more than, I wanted to but in any case, I still had my breaks and got out as much as possible in between the rain and work, I was staying close to Lamai Town which is the second largest Town after Chaweng Town and a cheaper town to stay.
Lamai Town Center.
I liked Lamai Town more than Chaweng Town for not only the reasons it was a cheaper town to stay in but because of being an older town, it just had more character and charisma and seemed a lot quieter without all the bustling of traffic or tourist. I was enjoying walking the main road looking at the old mixed with the new and no high-rise buildings on this island which didn't make it look like a concert jungle, it just had that beautiful tropical feel about the whole island.
There is much to see in Lamai Town after heading off the main road I headed onto the beach where I walked along the beach going through the Muslim Fishing Village and Markets and turned back onto the main road as I had been told there was a huge Buddha in the town center that I should not miss to visit.
Muslim Fishing Village Lamai Town.
Walking along the main road again I could see the head of this big Buddha statue reaching the gray clouds as I approached this Buddha the gates of heaven opened up again but luckily I had made a cover after a few minutes the rain had cleared again and I was back to exploring Lamai Town but not before I took a walk through the Chinese Buddhist grounds.
Guna Yu Shrine Lamai Town.
So what does this huge Guan Yu Shrine repents Guan Yu was a general in the civil war in China more than 1,800 years ago and was well respected for bringing his people to peace, he bought righteousness, loyalty, and honesty among his people and was then known as the God of war. It is mostly visited by the Chinese tourist and the Thai-Chinese that live on the island coming to give their respect for the freedom that Guan Yu fought for his people of China.
There is a small museum telling and showing the history of general Guan Yu and apart from the small pray room, there are a few more interesting old items around these grounds like this old Rickshaw and downstairs below the monastery, there is a fitness center on one side and an art gallery on the other side with some colorful graffiti artwork certainly a colorful area to see.
Directly across the road from the Guan Yu Shrine is a nice restaurant on the beach where I stopped to have some lunch before continuing my walk luckily the rain had stopped, I was the only one there who had the whole beach and restaurant to myself enjoying the stunning views around me.
Lamai Beach.
After enjoying a couple of small Thai dishes and a mix of fruit juice I continue my walk along Lamai Beach my next destination was less than one kilometer away called the Red Temple.
The Red Temple.
I had reached the Red Temple walking along the beach you can also walk along the main road to get to the Red Temple but for me, I felt more comfortable walking along the beach once you have reached the Red Temple you climb to pass the two huge Cobra snakes up about 30 steps and you are in the temple grounds.
We foreigners called it the Red Temple but in Thai, it is called the Wat Ratchathammaram and it's located at the top of Hua Thanon beach on the south side of Koh Samui Island. If you are driving along the main road this temple will catch your eyes because of its color and the long red brick wall.

This Red Temple was amazing not only was it red in color which is unusual in Thailand but has been built with terracotta and clay, I thought the sculpturing was carved wood but it turned out to be all the sculpturing on the outside and inside of the temple walls have been all carved out from clay that is some astonishing work.

The inside was just as equally sculptured, it reminded me of the Micheal Angelo painting covering the cathedral walls to the ceiling, I do think this was more challenging having been sculptured in clay could you imagine the hours and the neck-breaking job. Because of the sunlight coming in through the windows and the color of the temple, it made it more challenging for me to photograph so, I did some in black and white so it would bring out more detail of these stunning sculptures of the sea demons and all the warriors of the Gods.

It certainly comes to life in this temple there is a lot of history looming around the inside and outside of this temple this temple certainly left me in awe of one worth visiting and after the visit the crystal blue turquoise waters are waiting for you just back down the steps.
