How do YOU plan your day? your project? your stuff? I want to hear!

avatar

Today I went to a local office supply store called Staples.

It's a big chain, and there's one close by.

Tammy needed some inventory tags for the furniture and smalls she sells in her shop down in Denver. My son Kai and I were also in tow, since we'd all 3 just come from family breakfast.

planners3.jpeg

Good ol' planners. 😀

While I was in the store I came across a section of "planners" - the small (or sometimes LARGE) notebooks with pages and section specifically laid out to help you keep organized.

Many of them are laid out in calendar format since we're largely thought to plan linearly across time. (Try using mindmaps sometimes instead.)

I couldn't resist the opportunity to take a couple photos of these for my post here, to show that people are obsessed with planning. Please remember that this post is written by a man who has a 3 Steps process that begins with 1. Plan. 😃

planners2.jpeg

From life goals to shopping lists people like to plan.

Over the past little while that I have been on the blockchain I've noticed that people track all kinds of things and make plans of all kinds.

There's lots of different ways to plan and track what you do, and what works for me may not work for you and same in reverse.

So what do we do?

planners1.jpeg

Let me know how you plan your day\live\project!

Why? So I can prioritize the material I creat for the PLAN portion of my 3 Steps.

  • Do you use checklists?
  • Do you have a system you use? Any specific sites like Trello or Miro or mindmaps?
  • Do you track using pen and paper or online?
  • Which is better (online vs. pen and paper) and why?
  • Do you use S.M.A.R.T. goal or something else?

I'd love to know how you plan stuff. No kidding.

As I plan out my P.A.R. outline and articles, I want a sense of what others think is most needed in the PLAN portion of my 3 Steps. Some people may want more "grand" project-level how-to's while others may want more simplified planning such as how to use SMART goals.

Leave a comment below and let me know your thoughts.

Peace and Love,

-Rob

P.S. Don't consider my posts financial advice. Do your own research. I write for entertainment.

Oh, one more thing: I have a 3 Steps mailing list that I am in the mists of converting over to this new format and I'd love it if you would consider signing up and watching my 3 Steps plan blossom.

Thank you for all of the awesome "Financial Advice" lol just kidding 🤣 Seriously planning is so important, it goes hand in hand with execution. I plan everything including breaks and meals. I even schedule personal time with family and friends.
I have a Planner that I purchased last year From Ziglar Corp, and I transferred what I liked and felt worked with my business to a spreadsheet, that way I never have to worry about the dates expiring. The planner has last years dates but the spreadsheet has current dates.
I also use a whiteboard, iCal (apple calendar app) along with MS OneNote. Sometimes that is still not enough 😃
Just so you know I have upvoted this post and will upvote the directing email in Listnerds 👍

Back when @blainjones was running the #ctpcontent Challenge, the direction was to use a calendar and plan your content 30 days at a time, that is what I do. Although full disclosure, no BS I am still working on the process, it has not become a habit and is sometimes forced often times I go back and change things around, almost like I am arguing with myself lol.
Practice makes Perfect 😀

How do I plan my day. Hmmm.
I don't use a planner like in your pictures.
Since I retired I haven't tried to plan too much. If I need to get something done then it will go onto a notepad/shopping list. Generally just items for the day. Back when I worked for a living I would have a good list and carry items to the next day etc.
I read this blog from listnerds and have upvoted your email in listnerds.

Ahh planning.. something we all do one way or the other. I used to plan to the smallest details. However, the past few plandemic years has shown me to sometimes just go with the flow. I still plan but not as detailed as before anymore. I have learned to adjust depending on situations and circumstances around me. I do keep a checklist esp for my declutter and refurbish project. That I still jot down ideas on scratch papers or the back of my used weekly planner sheet. Then I keep the page until I'm done with that particular idea. I have a separate goals notebook to track my overall progress. I draft an annual goal list. Then I do quarterly and mid-annual assessment. I also recalibrate plans and goals as I go through the entire year. It's comforting to have a list. It makes me feel like I have a roadmap, although I know that sometimes things are beyond our control.

Much success to you. Enjoy your weekend!

I am not a natural "planner" - and for a lot of my life I was able to play things by ear. Then new job, then kids, then new job again, then all that stuff upon stuff. And then, just to keep things mellow...I decided to explore the very complicated world of crypto. I have found that if I just go with it, I keep exploring more and more projects and adding more and more little things that eat up so much time!
So I am going back to what used to work for me before - creating blocks of time for XY and Z - plugging those into my calendar, and holding myself to make sure I only ignore my alams 50% of the time haha
Upvoted you here and on ListNerds btw, I appreciate how you want to engage with us beyond harvesting email addresses!

Yes, if you expect others around you to perform to a standard, you need to hold yourself to a standard, too. It is when I "give myself a break" when my performance really falls off. tbh I am super burned out at work... indeed, was burned out even before covid, so I am in "just add more oil" mode rather than "change oil and filters and check the belts" phase. But I know the tradeoff to just get through now is less achievement. Targeting Q4 for a rebirth :)

There are a lot of members on Listnerds who aren't part of hive because of the previous non-Hivian membership. However, CTP is an open group and has a great support mindset. @elianaicgomes may know more, and there's also the FAQ and whitepaper which are accessible without joining.

The ultimate goal that CTP and now ListNerds always have was getting more "outsiders" to embrace blockchain and crypto and Hive would be the best place for it!
But with ListNerds it happen something better: not only we are slowly getting more outsiders but also Hive members are embracing Email Marketing and we all together slowly cleaning up the pitchers and spammers with engagement and relationship building :)

Tiffany and I are always planning ahead. We plan weeks ahead what Orangetheory studio will we be working out at and what coaches, etc,

We plan running events we want to participate in, buy entry way ahead of the event.

We plan menus for the week ahead.

She loves spreadsheets 😆

I try to plan my HIVE and online marketing activities, but I sticky note or ms notepad my way through that. That’s where I need to improve drastically.

It looks like you were born with that gene of being a master planner @threesteps.

Very well written and creative....As for the content of the post!!

BAM!

I thought I was the only one LOLOL Nah seriously, my go to 'planner' are 2 options...Either my whiteboard calendar or my Moleskine that I have at my desk. I couldn't imagine life without either!

My strategy is...write 3 things down, every day...cross them out when I accomplish it. Been using the whiteboard for that for years. Seems to work.

I have a whiteboard in my room so I guess it's my planner 😄
Usually, I have 3 to 5 things to do per day so I give each task order of priority.
I plan everything before I go to bed the day before.
In the morning I do everything that requires a lot of brainpower and the rest I do during the afternoon.
I prefer to use a whiteboard for planning because it's more convenient for me, I just have to look up and see what I have to do next.

I haven't been to Staples in a long term as you can get most things online now and just wait for them to get delivered. As for a planner, I never used one but I do think it might help. In the end, I put the most important stuff on my calendar and work from there. However maybe a digital one would be better as I prefer things to be on my computer instead. I also upvoted your post on listnerds.

Thank you for sharing these very useful tips about planning.

Planning helps you to be an organized person both in your personal and official life. It helps to keep things in order and neatly arranged. It shows the character of the person and how organized he or she is.

Once we make planning a habit, we would be executing it in our daily life even without our knowledge. It just flows...

It shows the character of the person and how organized he or she is.

  • Interesting way to think about it. Our goal is to achieve the flow you are talking about. Some folks thought stop after planning without the action. I'll address that in another post.

I love your Listnerds emails I always upvote them. What if I have a planner? Well, normally I don't plan the day to day but I do write down the things I have to do on my mobile, it's that I have a fish memory.

But if something important has to be done, then I do plan in detail and analyze the result as well.

Fish memory. I can understand. I have to plan an document because with doing so, it's hard for me to keep on track after my head injury. I wish I'd had this habit before all of that happened. :D

Even though I don't use a planner, I have a workspace in Trello which has a list of items I want to accomplish every day and I use alarms on my phone to help me remember things that happen multiple times a day. It's pretty much the same checklist every day (I need to get better about planning things that are not in the checklist), but it helps keep me focused on the tasks I want to accomplish each day. Thank you for bringing this topic back into the discussion.

I am a born planner. The truth is that I love to plan things and what I use to do it are spreadsheets. First I make a sketch of the idea that I have in mind and then I translate it with numbers in the spreadsheet. If everything checks out then I move on so I avoid unpleasant surprises.
I forgot, I voted for your Listnerds email. It is an incredible tool that more and more people use.

We use trello....we have different boards set up for different projects as well as our record labels schedule on it. This helps to keep everyone on track and also to monitor progress. On this there are daily tasks...oh and then there is the bit where we just have fun and do random things...but this is scheduled....

Well, yesterday was very easy. There was no need to plan. I had to "swallow the toad" and grade student exams for one of the colleges I teach at. Took me all day.

Okay, here are some answers to your questions:

Do you use checklists?
These days I write a TO DO list for the day each morning, and cross things off (or add other stuff) as I go through the day.

Do you have a system you use? Any specific sites like Trello or Miro or mindmaps?

No. But I do create mindmaps from time to time. Pen and paper ones.

Do you track using pen and paper or online?
I track my goals in a notebook.

I blog about my progress towards my crypto goals about twice a month on CTP Chat, and create a progress chart for each blog post.

Last summer I used Habitbull, the online habit tracker for a while. It was fun to use at first, but I abandoned it after a while. I think it was a combination of technical issues that emerged and a feeling that it was not necessary to repeatedly update for established habits or important enough to maintain for more ephemeral ones!

Which is better (online vs. pen and paper) and why?

I prefer pen and paper. It seems more engaging and immediate. There is a lot of pleasure in writing and creating diagrams with a pen in hand.

Do you use S.M.A.R.T. goal or something else?

I didn't consciously go through the smart routine when fixing my online biz goals for this year, but that is in effect what they are.

David,

Thanks for the well-worded response to each one. Wow. Lots of stuff to go through. Interesting that you use notebook for one portion and online for the blogging.

As for "swallowing the toad", I had to look that euphemism up. Not one I was familiar with.

In the good old days I was a to do list planner. I use Trello to document tasks that have multiple steps that I do not do very often - like building a new website on WordPress.

Nowadays my days and weeks follow a pattern that does not need a plan I am sure they would do better with a plan. A new project will get a plan and I will write a list.

I did upvote your post and followed and upvoted the email in Listnerds. - Good way tog et action from a Listnerds email

Agreed re: the ListNerds method of getting folks to engage. Totally works. I am thrilled with the interaction I am receiving, because I am researching the 3 steps I use a bit more so I can flesh it out for other people. That's why when people let me know how they do what they do, it helps me because I have feedback.

I'm a planner that's for sure. I've tried everything imaginable to plan out my day from physical diaries to whiteboards to Trello and other associated software. Being a freelancer I often get asked to use Trello or something similar. To be frank, I find software tedious.
Nothing beats a plain piece of paper In my opinion. I've formalised the process by keeping an exercise book where I list out all my tasks daily and then prioritise. There are also pages for monthly and quarterly plans. and a special book for "ideas" that may or may not have legs.

It usually takes a lot for me to plan things and I don't really plan my days. I used to use a planner but not so much anymore. I have a plan of how I should reach my goals but I haven't written it out just yet. I spend so much time just trying to complete my tasks everyday that I haven't taken the time to plan. I think about how I would do it but I just haven't put it to paper which I do believe that's what I need to do.

Sometimes I do use a checklist by writing done things I want to accomplish the next day and that usually helps a lot. If I have a lot written down I work the list even if it takes a couple of days.

I mostly use paper and pen but sometimes I'll make a chart in MS word. I like using both ways, for me it's whatever easiest at the time I need it. I will try out the mind mapping as I never thought to use it in that way but since you mentioned it that may be a good way to do it.

I don't care for apps and programs for this purpose cause they always seem to be missing something for what I need.

I don't use the SMART goals, not on a daily bases anyway.
