Yeah, it's brutal – like marking someone forever so everyone knows their crime. Glad we moved past that stuff
Deep seated hatred. Most likely of ones self! ☹️
could be self-hatred, but I think it's more about dehumanizing the criminal - marking them as "other" so society feels justified in the cruelty
Everyone is scared of the evil that lurks in others and fears that it lurks in them as well.
And it does. We just can't admit that.
Yeah, that shadow side in all of us is scary to face - easier to project it onto the "bad guys" and mark 'em up so we don't have to look inward

That song nails it - facing our inner demons is tough, but ignoring them just makes the projection worse
