General Benedict Arnold. Yes, General. Washington loved this 'traitor's' handling of military command. He was reckless, but highly effective. He made friends and enemies easily as he didn't give two shits about political gain or promise. He was the embodiment of a patriot and one of the reasons we defeated the British to begin with. So why sell us out at West Point?
For someone that never cared about money or social stature outside of military recognition, I often question why the finger was pointed at him for the betrayal of the Continental Army. Some would say it was to pay off his debt. Others, that outranked and hated him, may have had a hand in it. Who really knows? I wasn't there. The one thing it did do, was light a fire so big under the (future) United States military that it burned out the British in just a few years following. But, it is one of the most speculated points in American history and whenever the term traitor is brought up, Benedict Arnold will always say something.
Few men have virtue to withstand the highest bidder.
