Splinterlands 101 - Cheat or Not Cheat, You Decide!

avatar
(Edited)

These past few days there are several Spy-Your-Battle tools out there for @Splinterlands players to use. Today I'm going to explain one of them, SpyBattle by @Splintertools.

This post is made for informational purpose only.
Please use (or not use) with your own volition.
Me myself thinks this is not the right way to play, because it will crushes most of the newbies out there, and this breaks the balance of the battle itself.
See the last section of this post to prevent your opponent to see your cards.
And share this post if you think someone needs it.

UPDATE on Oct 10th 23:36 EST

@Splinterlands released official updates in their Discord Server as below:

As you notice, the first point is what this entire post is all about. I'm so glad that the devs put on some thoughts regarding this issue. At first I thought if the devs can make that option as enabled by default, that's more than enough already. But apparently they decided to take a step further and remove it permanently. Kudos!

SPY YOUR BATTLE

In Splinterlands, all game-related transactions will be published (or recorded) in #Hive #Blockchain. This includes your battle data.
What I mean by battle data consists of but not limited to:

  1. Date & time of the battle.
  2. Mana cap.
  3. Rulesets.
  4. Both player's username.
  5. Both player's submitted card.

Yes, you read it right. Submitted cards will be published to the public ledger aka Hive Blockchain. It's just a matter of finding the correct path to source that information out.

Splintertools used this fact to make their SpyBattle tool.

HOW DOES IT WORKS?

1. Open 2 Browser Tabs

SplinterlandsSplintertools SpyBattle

2. Start Your Battle

Before you start your battle, be prepared on the SpyBattle page and type in your username first.

Once you start & found your opponent, click on SPY ON YOUR ENEMY on Splintertools page.
Note that it will show Trying to get team of {your enemy's username} ! Please wait.
Now, depending on when your enemy submitted their team, that's also when Splintertools will show you their chosen team.
If they haven't submit, you won't be able to see them.
There's a chance they'll submit near end of countdown, then that means you'll have very little time to choose your own team.

3. Choose Your Team

For this example, my opponent luckily submitted their team ahead of time (around 2:00 on the countdown timer). This leaves me with more than enough time to choose appropriate team to counter my opponent's.

For this example, he/she choosed Zintar and some basic lineup of Death splinters.

I ended up choosing Lorna and the splinters layout to counter my opponent. In the end, this was a devastating loss for me. I underestimated Haunting Spirit's healing. Shame on me.

Anyway, I tried the tool again, and for the next 3 battles, I won easily. After that, I decided to steer off from this tool. It just doesn't feel right for me.

HOW TO PREVENT ENEMY SPYING ON YOU?

Of course, one needs proper deck to choose the best counter for the opponent's chosen cards. But it just doesn't feel right to be able to spy on your enemy like this.

Here are some tips to prevent them to use tools like this to spy on you:

1. Enable this option in your Settings.

By doing this, you prevent the system to publish your cards once you submitted it.
The downside is:

Enabling this option will prevent your opponent from being able to see your chosen team before submitting their own. Please note that you will not receive credit towards your daily quest if your opponent surrenders or flees. Tournament and Challenge battles will always use this option by default.

2. Submit Your Team at Last Moment

When you already enabled above option yet you still afraid your enemy will be able to see your submitted team, there's only one more thing you can do:
Submit your team at the latest (and safest) time possible.

I recommend submit your team at 15 seconds left mark, because I think this is a safe time to let your internet connection buffer, yet it gives minimum time for your enemy to change their deck should they still be able to see your deck.

OUTRO

I admit this is a great tool, and it was born because of the transparency of Blockchain Gaming itself. As I stated on the first section, I made this post only as informational purpose. I'm not encouraging people to use it, nor to not use it. It all depends on you, whether you'll treat this as a cheat, or as a learning tool.

With great power comes great responsibility.
Uncle Ben

The one from Splintertools is still in a development phase, but there's another paid version which I know of. I don't know much of the details because I haven't tried the other one myself though.

Yup just another way they give botters an advantage over others.

It helps the bots so much, because they can quickly play a counter to most people.

No gamer EXPECTS that others can see what battle they are submitting. Just like no games EXPECTS bots to be embraced and promoted.

In my opinion, that option in Settings should always be turned on by default. This will help new players, especially those who are not reading blogs like this.

Nyobain spy 3 kali dan kalah semua battlenya🤣, tapi mungkin itu karena perbedaan lvl kartu (mencoba optimis).

Iya kah? Hahaha. Soalnya kucoba bbrp kali, semua hampir pasti bs menang, kecuali mmg kartu lawan udah keterlaluan jauhnya sama kartu kita.

Awesome I actually had no idea you could do this, definitely going to wait until last minute to submit my team, not interested in looking at theirs that just kills the spirit of the game.

Now Splinterlands has disabled that settings, and I don't think anyone can spy on anyone anymore.
But it doesn't hurt to submit at last moment, though.
Cheers.

so thats the reason why sometimes i encounter an enemy who at first i assume were just too slow to make up a team. theyre delaying it so that you cannot peak into it. wow.

That's a possibility, yes.
But now Splinterlands has updated the settings, by right the peeking system cannot be used anymore.
