Well Hello There Hivers And Technicians!

Something new, something new

I suppose working in the transmission trade really allows me to work with several different type of vehicles doing a lot of random stuff on them, mainly always transmission related but every now and then I get something out of the ordinary.

Take this truck for example we had to do the clutch and fly-wheel on this one and a few extras. The extra's we had to do was fitting a new speedometer cable along with the plastic frame holding all of the gauges in place (Now I'll be honest, that was a shitty witty job no doubt.😂) and then I had to replace the rear shocks on it and a few lug nut studs on the rear right tire. Oh and I needed to fit a new slave-cylinder but I don't think that counts as out of the ordinary I feel that is more transmission related problems.

I am going to slice this post into two parts, I have a lot to cover and making the post too long... Ehh well it can get boring. Okay okay without further ado lets jump into this!


Trucking Onwards

As you can see we got this truck to work on, one might think damn that's hard work but in reality it's actually a lot easier to work on than cars in my opinion at-least. Everything is wide open and plain and simple (Nothing tricky whatsoever, except the clutch, that can be tricky to a new guy.)

The Parts Needing Replacement.

Thought it might do good to snap the parts that I will be replacing on this truck, come to think of it now it's still all sealed no all you'll see is a bunch of plastics. Fear not I have taken separate photos of all the parts as I fit them!

The brand new clutch and fly-wheel, clutch to the left and fly-wheel on the right. Apparently the owner of the truck says he has to redo the clutch every now and then and asked us to inspect as to why this is a problem for him (Meaning we should tell him if it's driver abuse or not.) After removing the transmission we noticed that he has a button clutch installed well of course he will need to redo it every now and then, that buttons love burning fly-wheels and then you end up buggering the clutch as well. If the vehicle constantly carries heavy loads I won't recommend fitting a button clutch to it.

Preparation Is Key

Since it's a new fly-wheel I love to wipe it off with a thinners cloth, the reason for this is that the factory tends to put a thick oily type of plastic layer on it. _(It's not actually plastic although it feels a lot like plastic but it's more of a very thick greasy substance. Not wiping that off would cause slipping problems on your clutch because well it needs to bind with the fly-wheel and a grease would prevent that from happening.

New clutches don't normally have that greasy substance the pressure plate, however I do treat it in the same manner just to be sure. (I do the same with new brake discs and drums.)

Pull Type Clutch

Well this can be confusing to some newbies, I only recently got my head around it as well to be honest😂 It's basic, instead of pushing it just pulls. You know vica versa? But this is a thick one! Fitting this can be tricky, because the release bearing sticks to the clutch itself and then you've got to sort of guide the input shaft through the release bearing and then you've got to make sure the clutch fork is lined up nicely to get that release bearing in its place.

Easy if you know what to do, tricky if you don't.

Struggling Is For Puppies

Well in all honesty I would be lying if I said it wasn't somewhat of a challenge 😂 that is one very heavy fly-wheel and remember that's a solid piece of metal! But I got her nice and tight in her place all by my lonesome! Meh I got to say the Nyala's of the police force that we work on has a lot thicker fly-wheel now that one is a killer.

I've only added four of the eight bolts that it uses to secure it in place, don't worry I did at the rest. I always add a little bit of lock-tight on the bolts and tighten them in a criss-cross motion to ensure it seats properly. Then when it's bolted down into place I generally take a air-tool and make sure they are fastened properly. We wont want this one to come loose ey, it would cut the truck in half. 😂

A Easy To Forget Bearing

Now this is a fella that can be easily forgotten! How? Well it just slips your mind, luckily to this day I've never forgotten to add one, what I have forgotten before was to fit the clutch fork 🤣 now that I have. Imagine fitting this transmission with all your heart, adding oil, double checking if everything is properly tightened and then packing up your tools to see this little bearing between your parts. 😅 It wont be no fun I can tell you that!

A big must when fitting a bearing is to always hit it on the wall that fits the tightest, for example this one is the outer cage of the bearing, so when inserting it one should get a dolly the exact size or perhaps a little bit smaller than the outer wall and then tap it into place lightly as to not cause damage to the bearing

Clutch Alignment

For this one I will be getting my trusty make shift clutch alignment tool, its only a input shaft that's cut off and has a long bolt welded to it so that one can easily remove it again.

Okay it's not entirely impossible to align one of these clutches without it, the thing is it will be so tricky you would need more patience that you think you might ever need. And some time on your hands! And well with the year drawing to a end, time is what we don't have and besides why struggle when it can be easy?

All it does it hold the clutch plate in place while you bolt down the pressure plate, having to guide both of them would be a struggle although as I said not impossible. Once the clutch pressure plate is fastened securely you are free to remove the input shaft. I tend to be careful when removing it, sometimes it creates a suction and then all of a sudden it releases and you end up whacking yourself on the head.🤣

Hey, I don't know if I'm right but I assume you live in the US, if so, I never thought that TATA brand was also there, I know it's Indian.

Good tip about cleaning the fly-wheel with thinner to remove the grease that would make the clutch slide, and what a laugh that you repeat: this can be confusing for some newbies! Bro even "mechanics" get confused haha

Hahaha that's true, its probably because it's out of the ordinary 👀 not something you work with everyday. Well unless you work on trucks everyday
