Well Hello There Fellow Technicians And Hivers

So what better way to end a Friday than to do a quick and easy private at home? One that would literally take less than 20 minutes from start to finish?

Hell yes I will!

It's been a long and tiring week but pushing it further for another 20 minutes can really not be such a killer can it?

See here's the thing, this was "supposed" to be a clutch overall, or well that was what they requested, naturally I like to ask a whole bunch of questions because more than often I'm very skeptical about doing privates, not that I get a lot of them (I should probably start advertising.) but the fear of messing things up are always there even though I am super careful always. But the thing is if I do mess up the problem will be mine and solely mine.

But the need was there to help and help I did.

The problem this person had was that the vehicle didn't want to select the reverse gear. So they asked for a quotation to fit a new clutch, and they got charged R5800 which is roughly $330 USD. Which is insane. Given that the clutch was around R2500 which is $140 USD. So asking more than what the actual price on the clutch is just to remove the transmission fit the clutch and refit the transmission.

That's madness.

What's even more mad is the fact that they would have done the clutch and the problem would have still been there.

Yeah.

The problem turned out to be the gear links, a quick examination of the vehicle confirmed it for me.
I asked the lady what exactly is the problem and she told me that the vehicle doesn't get reverse gear... Well it's obvious that if the problem was indeed the clutch they would have struggle to get any gear at all. But what really confirmed it for me was that even when the vehicle was switched off they still struggle to get reverse.

This means that all fingers pointed towards the gear links.

So I went out and got a price for the lady on the gear links, and well let's say it was tremendously cheaper than a clutch overall which would have led to nothing.
The price on those were R500 which is roughly $30 USD so I went ahead and asked her R800 which is roughly $45 USD.

Needles to say she was more than relieved at how little it was. Even though I saved her a whole bunch of money I do feel somewhat guilty of asking so much for a quick fit which took me less than 20 minutes and that was with a coffee drink in between.

But it's done now.

Let me try and show you how easy it was.

Well the gear links are somewhere underneath the battery box. Most people would have just worked around them but I don't fancy a struggle so I'll be removing anything and everything that might be in my way.

Starting with the battery.

IMG_20230203_174024.jpg

Once the battery is removed the next piece would be the battery box itself, which is held in by two 13mm nuts and a 13mm bolt. So far I had to remove 6 bolts in total.

Literally the easiest job I've ever done in my life.

Well since the work wasn't all that much I went ahead and cleaned everything I removed before re-fitting it all.

So the parts that needed removing were just underneath the battery box. Very easy to work with aswell. Although not knowing how to remove them can cause you a bit of a headache and turn into something that gets broken.

Yeah gear links can sometime be very sensitive so say the least.

IMG_20230203_174539.jpg

The left one has a little clip that pops off and then the gear link can slide out of position and the right one just pops off with a little pressure.

Removing the link itself you have to pull back the spring towards the head of the link and this will cause the three legs to pop open.

Refer back to the first image in post.

Well the heads are removed and ready to be fitted with the new ones.

Glad I didn't break anything. 😂

IMG_20230203_174832.jpg

Before fitting the new heads I had to make sure that the gear lever was infact in neutral or very close to the neutral position.

Then I had to make sure that the transmission was also in neutral. because when you pop the links over you won't need to do too much adjusting to get the sweet spot.

Inserting the gear links went relatively easy because I added a small drop of oil on the inside of the bush.

Before releasing the spring that pushes and locks the gear link head in place I double checked if the gear lever was still in neutral as well as the transmission.

And bam just like that I was so to say done with the job. All that was left was to refit the battery box, connect the terminals and test the vehicle.

Of-course needless to say that everything was perfect as it should be!

I have to say it feels amazing to be able to help someone out and they actually and genuinely do appreciate the effort.

Congratulations! Good job!
Many times some jobs would be better to do them yourself at home: there are smart people out there who charge you a lot of money for nothing!
A friend of mine had a similar thing happen too, not with a gearbox, but with a window lift.
He had asked an electrician why the window lift motor sometimes didn't work and the mechanic told him to bring him the car that it was definitely the motor and it would be 200€ + the cost of the work.
One day he got inside the car with a tester and found that a connector was not working properly. Fixed the connector the window lift works perfectly without any problems. Solved the problem at 0 cost!

Yeah no... Electrics are 90% of the time just a loose connection because of a rattle or something.. Bumpy roads perhaps..

Im glad he decided to jump in himself... 200 bucs for that.. Insane... It's not even hard labour 😂😱...

See the thing is people don't know any better and just end up accepting the bills because of being desperate for a fix... And the bigger the job the more they take.... But with that said.... Alot of people say they can get it cheaper else where and end up paying more because of that "cheaper"
