This Catfish Isn't Fooling Anyone 🍽️ Kwie-kwie Is Best In Curry Sauce
Have you ever heard of Kwie-Kwie or kwikwi? It is a type of shelled catfish found in the waters of Suriname and its neighboring countries, that's considered a delicacy here in Suriname, especially now that fishing, selling and eating it is being regulated by seasons nowadays.

Growing up, I can't remember having kwikwi during regulated times, but nowadays the kwikwi season starts April 1st and ends mid July. Now that we're in October, it's open season of course and during our trip to Nickerie we encountered sellers vending this type of fish, so we didn't hesitate to purchase some.

Kwikwi can be prepared in various of ways and even in soups, but I've enjoyed it the most in a curry sauce. Preparing kwikwi demands a lot of effort - cleaning the shells with a brush - which is why I haven't attempted to cook it myself (yet) and why I asked my folks to leave some for me.

And if you're wondering what kwikwi tastes like, I'll have to be honest that it's not everyone's cup of tea and that it requires one to have special taste buds to find it appetizing, because it has a certain fishy (mud) watery taste. That's why I find curry and a lot of pepper the best way to consume it.

I have tasted catfish in my region, they sell them in two types, river catfish and saltwater catfish, both are a delight, I love them and I love to stew them.
But this type of catfish, I didn't know it, good thing the curry helps you to enjoy it.
I know about "swamp" water and river catfish, so wondering if they're the same and I presume these were swamp water, but I may be wrong though.
