The Others 🎥 Not A Run Of The Mill Horror, Leaving One With Mixed Feelings

I've watched my fair share of horror movies - from grisly to sometimes comedic ones and don't forget the ugly - but there are few that stick out story wise and the way everything unfolds. That's where the movie The Others comes in.

Some ten plus years ago this gothic supernatural psychological horror film was being broadcasted on the television and I remember watching it early in the evening all alone. It wasn't scary from the beginning, but there were instances where that eerie feeling crept up. Especially when the audience is being kept in suspense and some clues but not all were given, which left me with more questions than answers.

For those who aren't familiar with The Others, it's about a mother named Grace living with her ill Children Anne and Nicholas all alone in a manor during World War 2, until Grace hires some servants. It's during that time that Grace and her family experience strange things occurring in their home, with Anne even seeing "other" people who aren't supposed to be there.

Grace tries to get to the bottom of it all and even deploys a search party with help from the servants, who appear to have and keep their own secrets from Grace. This got me wondering if they were to be trusted or if the servants were the ones who brought "the others" into Grace's home.

When the answers to all of my questions finally had gotten revealed - which was done in a smart way I might add - it all made sense and the ending had left me with mixed feelings. It wasn't what I had expected and was definitely not written in a run of the mill horror story and yet the story still touched me.

I watched this movie years ago and it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I remember hiding my face behind my hands for some especially tense scenes. Since that first viewing I've seen it several more times to catch some of what I missed not knowing what the true story was in my first viewing. It's still one I would watch today.

The only consistent movie in my constantly-changing top 5 horror movies. Well-acted, and the final twist is something that can't be duplicated.
