"I used to be a brother and now I'm not" is one of the phrases that has hurt me the most lately watching a movie. Both for the phrase, how for its meaning, how for thinking that the movie is based on a true story, how for the incredible performance of Zac Efron. Sure, I'm talking about The Iron Claw, and while I may be a little late to the "discussion," I need to talk about this movie because not only is it one of the best movies of last year (and I'm a little upset that it didn't get any nominations) but it's also both painful and raw telling a story that, incredibly, is more painful in real life.

“Yo solía ser un hermano y ahora ya no lo soy” es de las frases que más me ha dolido últimamente viendo una película. Tanto por la frase, cómo por su significado, cómo por pensar que la película es basada en una historia real, cómo por la increíble actuación de Zac Efron. Claro, estoy hablando de The Iron Claw, y aunque tal vez llegue un poco tarde a la “discusión”, necesito hablar de esta película porque no solo es una de las mejores películas del año pasado (y me molesta un poco que no obtuvo ninguna nominación) sino que también es tan dolorosa como cruda contando una historia que, increíblemente, es más dolorosa en la vida real.

And well, Sean Durkin strikes me as a genius for not showing the story of the Von Erich family as a story completely filled with tragedy in what would be a two-hour movie of a family suffering to the point of exhaustion, thus making it so that we as an audience also have nothing beyond the simple morbidity of watching a person suffer.

Y bien, Sean Durkin me parece un genio al no mostrar la historia de la familia Von Erich como una historia completamente llena de tragedia en lo que sería una película de dos horas de una familia sufriendo hasta el cansancio, haciendo así que nosotros como audiencia tampoco tengamos nada más allá del simple morbo de ver una persona sufrir.

In fact, the film at many moments feels ethereal and it is quite a success to recreate this story in such a surreal way as even the family believes they are inside a "curse". A curse that eats them up one by one as they try to get further and further into the wrestling world.

De hecho, la película en muchos momentos se siente etérea y es todo un acierto recrear esta historia de una forma tan surreal ya que hasta la familia cree que está dentro de una “maldición”. Una maldición que se los va comiendo uno a uno mientras más lejos tratan de llegar más lejos al mundo de la lucha libre.

But ok, what is The Iron Claw about? The movie follows the Von Erich family from the eyes of Kevin Von Erich played by a perfect Zac Efron, who is watching his brothers improve in the wrestling world as they slowly lose their mental and physical health to earn the respect of their father, who has raised them with the idea that men don't cry and are strong and unbreakable.

Pero ok, ¿de qué va The Iron Claw? La película sigue a la familia Von Erich desde los ojos de Kevin Von Erich interpretado por un perfecto Zac Efron, quien va viendo como sus hermanos van mejorando en el mundo de la lucha libre mientras poco a poco van perdiendo su salud mental y física para ganarse el respeto de su padre, quien los ha criado con la idea de que los hombres no lloran y son fuertes e inquebrantables.

Thus, Sean Durkin gives us a film about a story of great importance in American culture that also has "hidden" between several layers the importance of family and how it can change the course of your whole life, a film about the love that is created between siblings and all the damage that can cause a bad upbringing. How it is possible to redeem yourself and how far obsession can go, full of shots that could be framed and performances by the entire cast that is worthy of admiration, being in my opinion the best cast of last year and a perfect movie to watch on a Sunday off. But yes, if you are bad, you will probably end up worse, in a melancholic state and in my particular, with the idea of being grateful for what I got in life.

Así, Sean Durkin nos regala una película sobre una historia de gran importancia en la cultura americana que además de eso tiene “escondido” entre varias capas la importancia de la familia y como esta puede cambiar el rumbo de toda tu vida, una película sobre el amor que se crea entre hermanos Y todos los daños que puede causar una mala crianza. El cómo es posible redimirse y hasta dónde puede llegar la obsesión, llena además de unos planos que podrían enmarcarse y unas actuaciones por parte de todo el reparto que es digno de admirar, siendo en mi opinión el mejor cast del año pasado y una película perfecta para ver un domingo de descanso. Pero eso sí, si estás mal, posiblemente termines peor, en un estado melancólico y en mi particular, con la idea de agradecer lo que me tocó en la vida.
