My First Day At Office — An Exciting, Awkward, and Scary Day

Today I started a new job! Well, you know how exciting, nerve-wracking things can get on your first day. That feeling….how would I say this, you’re excited but also nervous about what to expect from your new role, thinking about your colleagues, whether they are talking about you… You even wonder how you look!

The day can swing by very fast. Sometimes you will think time is paused. Well, it happened to me today. I arrived on time. I was very nervous about it. They say, on time is late, so arrived a little early. Well, none of the HR and hiring managers was there. This organization is the biggest organization in case of manpower in my little career. I was told to sit and wait for my manager’s arrival.

The desk I got had no PC and people started coming and started noticing me. Not just noticing you know… A strange - big stare. How would you feel seeing a stranger in your workplace sitting idly? I guess that’s what they felt. I started to feel so awkward. I couldn’t decide whether I would say hello to all of them and introduce myself. Later, I thought, let’s just wait…Maybe the hiring manager would introduce me to my colleagues. (That is what happened in my last job where I joined my first day physically)

So, suddenly a guy appears and sits just beside me. That guy was also a copywriter (I later discovered and I am supposed to fill his position)…. Meanwhile the room I’m sitting in, already filled up with employees. I said hello and talked a bit with him… Now I started feeling, I didn’t talk to the other guy sitting left to me, well I didn’t say hello to any of them…How rude of me! Is it a norm that a newcomer to the office would say HI first?…. I just started feeling more and more awkward. I always try to maintain certain corporate etiquettes in my workplace.

The last first day in my earlier office was a bit strange. It was during the hardcore Covid-19 pandemic. I started the office virtually. So, this was kinda new to me.

Whether My Colleagues Have Been Helpful or Not

Well, as the day passed, my fellow copywriter was really helpful to me. He was really supportive. He took all the pressure off. I felt really blessed. He mentioned that he might leave the job or he might not. I was and am a little bit worried about that. Cause except for the hiring manager and one other graphic designer, I don’t know any of them well. There are a bunch of people there! Like 35 to say the least!

Tea and Smoking Zone

As I mentioned earlier, I was feeling so awkward. I can’t get my day started without a cup of tea. I was waiting for a cup but feeling shy to ask about it. Meanwhile seeing my fellow colleagues taking a sip from their cups (which they brought from the kitchen) was multiplying my thirst! I couldn’t resist at a certain point. I went to the kitchen by myself and asked for tea from the boy who serves it. He was a kid. He said it will be at my desk within a minute, but it never came. Hours later my nicotine craving started kicking in. I asked my colleague at the right, where the smoking zone is (the one who was helpful)… Then I went by myself to smoke.

But the door was almost closed, I was seeing there were people on the inside but wasn’t certain whether I shall go in or not. You know I wouldn’t want my company to discomfort someone. But while I was thinking about what I should do, I knocked and went in. And I smoked my cigarette.

Wrap Up

The day after that went really fast. It wasn’t like that I was waiting for it to get over. But, I think such days go by fast. I have to say that I miss my first office. Where I learned the most and the place I miss the most. I spent 2 years there. I am so tired and just thinking that if I sleep within 20 mins, I would get 6-7 hours of sleep only. Where I need least 10 xD Well, I had so much to write, but as you can see I have narrowed it down to the end and finished it in a hurry. Fatigue wore me down!

Well, I am excited for tomorrow, to go to the office again. This doesn’t happen often.
