Music — My Escape Route

So, you're probably wondering how music saves me. Well, I know that most people won't understand this but sometimes music is life to me.

I am not talking about my personal favorite genre of music or anything like that; I am talking about the sounds itself. Music for me is more than what it can do to your body by releasing dopamine and serotonin (happiness chemicals) in the brain. It's more than just a distraction from reality when problems arise in life; it has become my escape from everyday stressors and worries. A way for me to take my mind off of things that are worrying me whether it be school work, tests, drama at work, home, etc.

When I feel like I'm down, or worried, I just play music and put on my earphones. Again, it's like an escape route for me. It lets me get rid of the bad vibes for some time. Yes, I would have to face it later, but it gives me a scope to evade reality.

When I am trying to get rid of stress, anxiety, or anger, I try to play calming music that brings out blissful feelings in me. The idea of calming vibes is pretty much centers around you and your mood.

Music also helps me go back in time and remember all of the great memories that I cherish with people who are important to me. It also helps me appreciate them more because they've helped shape my personality into what it is today. When problems arise and people aren't there for you as much as they should be…I feel like music can make up for it because it's always there for you when no one else is.

Music also helps to bloom the nihilism in me. Sometimes when I am sad, I try to maximize the sadness with music. You know the feeling I guess. It's like listening to sad songs by will and letting the sorrow burst out. People may think it's weird and depressing, but I feel like music makes me a better person. Listening to sad songs just helps me connect to people who have suffered more than I ever will and allows me to appreciate the beauty in life that we mustn't take for granted. It gives my mind a sense of…I don't know…closure?

Perhaps this is because as humans we want resolution at all times, but music doesn't always give you resolution. Sometimes you listen to a song and it can make you cry or laugh or dance or whatever emotion the song makes you feel. But those emotions help shape us as people; those same emotions show our sadness and happiness and anger and everything else that we can feel through good tunes, or good lyrics.

Sometimes when I am sad I just follow the lyrics and relate them to my life. I feel like that the song is written about me. I also like to look up the lyrics of a song after I have heard it just once. Doing this has introduced me to some great songs that I now love.

And if you're someone who likes to get lost in the music, then you know how therapeutic it can be. It's like your own little world where nothing else matters and you can just be. For me, this is especially helpful when I'm feeling overwhelmed or stressed about something. In those moments, all I have to do is put on my headphones and let the music take over. It doesn't even matter what kind of music it is; as long as it speaks to me, I will listen.

Enough about me! Do let me know if you feel the same...

Music has always been important and of course it has a huge impact on our mood, but recently for me for some reason music doesn't feel the same anymore. Like it simply doesn't hold the power it used to hold, the control it had over me has faded by quite a lot. I can literally feel it and its powerlessness over me and how it's becoming ineffective day by day. I don't know what went wrong or what's changed, but something surely is missing.

@riz611 I actually don't know what to suggest. But I think you may try switching to a genre which you don't usually follow. If it works let me know.

I agree listening to music has also been my stress-reliever. When things get tough and super stressful, I just listen to a wide variety of music and it makes me feel better and motivated.
