Buenos días, tardes o noches, damas y caballeros.

Good morning, afternoons or evenings, ladies and gentlemen. How are you? I hope very well. As for me, one could say that I have had better days but possibly everything is yet to improve, hope is always present, it is the only thing a person can cling to. In this case I come to present a work that I believe no one will know, I discovered it many years ago, I would have been about 12 or 13 years old, even considering that it came out in 2007, it is even more lost in time, very difficult for someone to find it and if they remember it is because they must have seen it, at that time I think I only got to watch one episode and nothing more so this year I decided to watch the complete anime to see how it is, what a surprise I got when I found out that the director is the same as Serial Experimental Lain, which greatly affects the viewing of the work due to the dense narrative, even a duo is formed that should guarantee success, a cult work, the character design is by the same person from Ghost in the Shell but it had everything to succeed, why was it forgotten? Is it a hidden gem or just another work of the crowd? In this post I will make a brief review giving my opinion on the work and why it perhaps was not engraved in time. So without further ado, let's talk about Ghost Hound.

The anime puts us in the shoes of a 14-year-old boy named Taro Komori, who as an innocent child was kidnapped along with his older sister, the latter ending up dead, he, when rescued, ends up suffering from post-traumatic stress, as well as having the mystery of what truly happened. On the other hand, we also have Makoto Ogami, who is part of a cult although he opposes it and also faces the trauma of his father's suicide (which Makoto believes was involved in Taro's kidnapping). Taro and Makoto's paths will fully cross due to the arrival from Tokyo of Masayuki Nakajima, who is an exchange student afraid of heights (caused by trauma) as he caused a suicide at his other school. Masayuki, interested in the kidnapping case, gathers the other two to visit the scene to finally uncover the truth, causing a disturbance in the spirits present, leading to the entire village where they reside also being affected. The mystery is clear: what really happened during the kidnapping? What do the spirits have to do with it? And why do Taro, Makoto, and Masayuki all suffer from joint astral travels?

The first thing I want to warn about this anime is that simply from the beginning it feels very dense, as the chapters go by you are overloaded with information and in the end, it is hard to process everything, because they touch on topics that for most people will be difficult to understand and even more so if you have no knowledge about the subject, for example, during the vast majority of the time they deal with psychological concepts, even the names of the chapters refer to them, I suppose that a person interested and knowledgeable about the subject will find it interesting but a common person must make an effort to understand what they are saying, as well as topics such as biotechnology, quantum physics, and Japanese folklore, in the end, you feel overwhelmed with so much information and you do not know where they want to lead the anime, you do not know if they are trying to scare or confuse you but what is a bit sad is that the good development from the beginning is lost finishing everything, literally by loading you with information during 20 chapters they only leave 2 chapters for a resolution, leaving aside the aforementioned and focusing on a last-minute drama, there is never a clear or convincing enemy and also, if you stop to think about some things, they leave many loose ends. I feel that they focused so much on doing something different that they forgot to make a decent ending.

And the fact that they wanted to present things until the end is perhaps what took away impact from the anime, they give you a happy ending but you end up confused, as if nothing you have seen really adds up, it doesn't happen like in other dense works like Evangelion, where you feel there is a purpose and even though it leaves you puzzled, the course of the work is enjoyable and doesn't overwhelm the viewer with concepts. By trying to cover too much, the development becomes very abstract because instead of focusing on just a few themes, they chose to overwhelm the viewer. The simple fact that this is not a cult work is because it is not surprising, it has no impact and you end up with more questions than answers, throughout the viewing you expect a conflict and when it finally arises it's not worth it, it could be said it was a failed attempt at making a second Serial Experimental Lain. As for the music, I must admit it is one of the best soundtracks I have heard in the horror/suspense genre, I always felt tense with how well the scenes were accompanied by the tracks, I thought anything could happen, and as for the animation, they excelled in the part where the protagonists have their astral journeys, they put effort into it. In conclusion, is it recommended to watch this? If you are a psychologist, maybe it will interest you, it deals with many of those concepts and nothing more.

That sounds interesting, i'm really not into psychological genre as I find it hard to absorb. I remember watching that kind of anime and I have to pause a lot because they also mention some unfamiliar word and me, who's very curious will leave the anime and visit google to learn more about it and to fully grasp what really happened. It will made you think a lot too. Although this anime is also interesting, I might not really like it so I'll just maybe save it and check it again later. Thanks for the share though. This anime is really old, that time when it was released, I've no idea yet about anime and more crazy in pocketbook than any other things ಥ‿ಥ.

The truth is, this anime isn’t for everyone; it’s too hard to watch and there’s a lot of information to take in. I’d find it very difficult to do what you said about checking Google for the meanings of things. They throw so many concepts at you that you could spend hours on just one episode. So, I chose to try and understand from what they said in the anime. It’s all very heavy but the setting is very good and yes, it’s an old anime but the animation for its time is excellent.

It seems like it's one of those anime where you have to pay close attention to understand, it makes my head hurt, but in some aspects it ends up being worth it, I really don't dislike it.

I didn't know about the existence of this interesting anime, thank you for sharing it with us. Greetings!

It’s exactly like that, you have to pay attention or you’ll lose track of the story because the details they give are vital to understanding everything. I even had to replay several scenes to properly understand and to check what the characters had said. It can give you a bit of a headache, but that’s what comes with trying something different

I think I would be part of the percentage that would not understand it haha and honestly I do not like to watch anime with 20 suspenseful chapters and then in the last two give a hasty and meaningless closure, well, that's what I understood, correct me if I misunderstood.

Even so, your review is very good presenting an anime that I didn't know ❤️

Well, it’s not that the last two chapters don’t make sense, they do, but technically they abandon all the theory they had set up before to make way for a dramatic ending against an ‘enemy’, resulting in a lot of loose ends. However, it’s not too bad; it’s a decent and happy ending, not everything has to be traumatic.

I’m interested!! Although I think this will be hard to digest, still I’m curious! You make me wanna watch it. Just too bad I couldn’t find it in Netflix and I have to rent it in Prime Video. I guess I’ll have to watch it in some other platform. 😅 But yesss I will try to watch because you convinced me hahaha

I can assure you that it’s quite tough to get into, but it’s worth giving it a go. If you get through the first three episodes, the pace picks up and the tension builds. And yes, I’ve only seen the anime available on Prime Video. It’s a shame it’s not on Netflix or Crunchyroll.

I feel that this kind of anime is a little lacking nowadays, the kind that makes you question everything and that, as you say, leaves you disoriented. Sometimes the endings shouldn't be so square and perfect. A rare anime that I will surely give a chance at some point.

Cheers!!!

The likelihood of such an anime being released these days isn’t very high, as it would probably not do well in sales. However, it would be intriguing to see animes of this kind that make you think come out now and then. I personally do enjoy them. The ending isn’t bad, to be fair. It’s decent, but it leaves a lot unresolved.

I guess I’m no one. 😹 I never finished but did watch the first few episodes of this back when it was still new. IIRC, I also watched and finished Ghost Hunt around the same time. I barely remember anything about either series.

Thanks for the review.

I remembered this anime technically because here in the community they talked about one with a similar name, I think it was that Ghost Hunt. I found the similarity in the names quite curious, but well, maybe this is a sign that you should finish watching Ghost Hound.
