Drought Wildfires and Strikes: August 12 2022

The picket line at Leicester Rail Station this morning for the ASLEF train drivers strike, with support from other unions and the Leicester and District Trades Union Council.

Good atmosphere and continuing widespread support from the general public. Apparently, a visiting BBC reporter at an earlier picket line wasn't able to find any member of the public opposed to the strike to interview.

I went for two short walks in the cooler parts of the day, mainly running errands and getting supplies. It was nice out, but I noticed very quiet: no queues in the Post Office and few people in the shops. The guy in Timpsons (shoe repairs, keys cut) looked like he'd had enough at eleven am and I feared whether he would last the day.

Tomorrow, the village is closed for the annual summer motor show. People turn up with their classic cars and they get the old buses out of the tram shed. I climbed in the driver's cab of one one year, then couldn't climb back out. They had to run round and find a step ladder for me. Although one gallant did offer to catch me if I jumped.

East Midlands under drought alert, along with seven other regions in England.
