Review

Former police officer Robert (Christopher Eccleston) and his wife, teacher Katy (Marsha Thomason) are living an idyllic rural life. But their peaceful life becomes broken when they are approached by one of Robert's former colleagues, looking for a remote safe house for a family who have been forced to go on the run. Robert finds himself drawn into a game of cat and mouse between a killer and the family he is trying to protect.

It’s got a new protagonist to Series 1`- Eccleston can vent his anger towards a, by - the - book police officer played by Stephen Moyer - more scrappy than Eccleston’s measured and quieter man of integrity.

In the first episode of four, a woman, Julie Delaney is abducted from her home with the same MO as serial killer, The Crow, from years ago - but Luke Griffith has already been arrested and imprisoned for those crimes - yet Eccleston always figured there was another person involved and still on the loose - he was the only one in the police force that believed this, and still does.

Safe House 2, is really a similar rerun of the original, in that it is a plot with enough twists and turns designed to keep interest, without demanding too much in the way of intellectual or emotional investment. It has a pulsing, efficient music score to point out to the viewer, when threat is coming. It's all quite obvious really, although the final reveal is a little far fetched.

It is a well made, solidly acted and well put together series but really only good for a couple of Sunday afternoons if there is nothing better to do - this reviewer can't seem to give it better praise than that.

The first series of began broadcasting in April 2015, and following successful viewing figures, a second series was commissioned and began broadcasting on 7 September 2017 on ITV. The first series was released on DVD on 25 May 2015. The second series was released on 20 November 2017.

The first was written by Michael Crompton, and directed by Marc Evans, known for his work on Hinterland and Collision. The second series was written by Ed Whitmore and Tracey Malone, both known for their work on Silent Witness, while Evans returned to direct.
