INTERNET DATA STRUGGLES - MY EXPERIENCE AS A NIGERIAN

image.png

When would data stop being a problem for me as a Nigerian?

Nigerians are facing a lot of issues, especially when it comes to data. If you are not that rich to afford a yearly plan twice on your line, then you may also have issues with subscribing to internet plans in Nigeria.

In Nigeria, we have 4 main network providers, which are MTN, GLO, AIRTEL, and ETISALAT. Aside from these, maybe you are getting a cable network or fibre optics network, which may probably offer a cheaper alternative, but the cost of equipment might be quite high, with the possibility that the network provider may not have service at your location or any location you later find yourself in the future.

From the networks earlier listed, MTN seems to be the one that offers the cheapest data plan as of now, but the catch is that it is not available for all numbers. They disable and enable it at certain periods on people's numbers.

MY EXPERIENCE

For some time, I have been using the MTN 5G Router because of the speed it offers. My reason for buying this router was because of the internet problems I face at school. The 4G coverage was congested, which means that the internet became slow, so I wanted to opt out of it and tune into something less congested and faster, hence my reason for buying a 5G router.

It turns out that there was not an Unlimited Plan for the 5G Router, and the plan available was not something that was beneficial. After subscribing for a few months and noticing I spend up to $30 a month on data subscriptions, I packed up my router because that money was not at my convenience at all. I was spending about $30 for 300GB.

The 5G router consumed my data faster than my 4G network, and I was happy to go back to using my 4G network instead of a 5G.

I had to save myself before 5G Network wrecked me

Thank goodness, the semester came to an end, which means that students went back home and the 4G coverage became less congested. I was able to go back using $11 for 80GB, and the usage was very much enough for one month.

This morning was when my data expired, and before it did, I had been waiting for this day to come before I subscribed. Yesterday, I decided to subscribe to another plan but figured that they had removed my access to it. I was grateful that I had not recharged my line with $11 before checking, or else it would have been very painful.

I became totally confused about what data plan to opt for and could not find a suitable plan that I could make use of. Then I saw $5 for 30GB on the mobile app. Although it was more expensive, I thought of giving it a try. Then I loaded $5 into my mobile network and clicked the button to subscribe. This was when I got a shocking prompt message saying below:

IMG_0379.png

I was pained seeing this after loading $5 in my account, and now it says not eligible. I ended up subscribing to a weekly data plan of 10GB for $1.8. Now my SIM card is left with extra funds in it. The most painful part of this data plan is that it cannot be shared with others. I have been trying to send data to my other MTN lines, but it is not going and instead is telling me I have an insufficient data plan.

So tell me, are you facing any issues concerning the internet or the subscription plan? How do you subscribe to the internet, and how convenient is it to do so?

Ah! MTN don dey craze oo 😆🤣... So they really said that shit! High hopes? If you were not eligible for the offer, why display it to you then.

As for me, I keep switching to the network that offers me the better data plan. I usually subscribe 6k for 50GB on MTN before, but it has been taken away for over a year now. I now currently use Airtel for my data and I subscribe 5k for 40GB although I have to do it twice in a month.

But for real, data cost is a major expense for young adults here in Nigeria, and it's beginning to get worrisome. Especially for those who can account for what that spend data on, on the internet.

5k for 40gb is a really nice deal. I should consider bringing back up my Airtel line. It was banned because of NIN.

this is pure theft. Day light robbery at its highest.

I don’t get why governments allow these multinationals to take advantage of the citizens and give the poor services at a high rate. You can wonder who will take care of the citizens when those elected to do it don’t care.

They probably pay the government a lot so they don’t say anything.

We have PTCL network here and it works very well. And if there are occasional issues, the package is pretty good. It gives the option that for how many days you want to install the package, they can also set up the line. And how many GB they want they can also set line. And in this sense, your money goes up that much this package will take. And it is subscribed and very useful for me

How much do you sub per gb?

Use as much data as you want throughout the month and a fixed fee is paid at the end of the month. $16

Hmmm I like that.. the data is unlimited but have a fixed fee... This is really nice.

Is that the only option available?

No, in addition there are some other networks and packages. But that's the better for me

Ahhh how come I had never thought that the 5G network being advertised would be more expensive to keep data in it? 😅 Big thing, big money lol.

I do a monthly sub on my MTN and it's cheaper when I do with someone I share data with monthly.

You share data with someone monthly? How do you do that?

We pay the fee together for a big amount of data and I share some to her daily
It's my sister though
It's way cheaper and lasts more that way for us.

I think the maximum amount of data you can share is 3GB... omoor so you would be sharing a range of 30-90 GB to your sister in a month! wow.

Yeah, we pay the fee together and I just have to send to her whenever hers runs out.

Nigeria network providers can frustrate people and I wonder if it's the same case abroad because I don't really understand why we have to pay so much for data subscription.

I have tried many of these special plans and all I get is that I am not eligible so I stick to my regular data subscription and it is kind of okay probably because I don't consume data like you do.

What data subscription plan do you do and what network?

I do regular data on my bank app, 20gb for 5500 MTN

Does this 20gb last for a month? Seems too small for me in a month.

Well, in Nigeria, just have backups. There's no hard and fast rule about it. The telecommunications industry are pretty much self-regulated with little to no checks on their inefficiciencies.

At best if you have more than one network, you can always fall back on another when one is down.

I use Airtel, Glo, then Starlink at work. I'm also planning on getting a fibreoptic network installed in my house when I have the funds.

Yeah I used to have more than one networks but they all got barred... I have not gone to retrieve them yet.

My data finishing when I don't have much on me is one of the greatest heartbreaks of all time. It gives me PTSD because I now have to be careful with which site I stroll into.

I am bk to buying new glo SIM cards every 6 months oooo. That way, I get 100% data bonus. $5 gets me 48gb and it is enough for my monthly surfing. I recently learnt a new trick.

If I abandon a Glo SIM for more than 2-3 months, they are likely to give me same package when I reactivate it (putting back in my phone). Although I recently just tried it. Hope it works again.

Yes Glo is good at my area but there are sometimes it becomes bad when that happens, I temporarily subscribe to either Airtel or MTN.

Glo also helps me save my data(their not so fast network) but I'm not complaining though compared to the way other service providers suck data.😄😄😄

I talked about Hive to two people yesterday in the bus to Rivers and they asked if I built Hive with the way I was passionately preaching it. I didn't plan to onboard them, though, just to tell them about such a platform.

This happened to me today and I told friends but they did not believe that I didn't have data on me.

I know glo for sharing dataplan between day and night. From that 48gb, how many is night?
