Excalibur (1981) review [ENG - ESP]

A few days ago I felt quite nostalgic in many ways, mainly in those times when I shared time with my family or my mother as a child and we would watch movies and even novels, and I happened to call my attention to relive those memories and watch one of the main movies of knights at that time by my mother and her particular taste with what represents the film in question, which in this case will be Excalibur.

I will do my best to keep away my emotional and nostalgic side with this film and be as technical and fair as in the previous installments, to not give a kind of preference linked to the emotional in question and give you a more justified opinion to what I thought, leaving that aside the end result to see it I will only tell you that it was interesting, because of course there is a significant difference in seeing it at this point in my life than in comparison at that time when I had the opportunity to see it in another time when I was a child of 13 years.

So without further ado it will be a pleasure for me to talk to you on this occasion about this classic of the time, I hope you enjoy reading this time so let's get started.

Hace unos días atrás me sentí bastante nostálgico en muchos aspectos, principalmente en aquellos tiempos cuando compartía tiempo con mi familia o mi madre al ser un niño y nos poníamos a ver películas eh inclusive novelas, y casualmente me llamo la atención el revivir esos recuerdos y ver una de las principales películas de caballeros en aquel entonces por parte de mi madre y su gusto particular con lo que representa la película en cuestión, en cual este caso será Excalibur.

Hare todo lo posible por alejar mi lado emocional y nostálgico con este largometraje y ser tan técnico y justo como en las entregas anteriores, para no darle una especia de preferencia ligado a lo emocional en cuestión y darles una opinión más justificada ante lo que me pareció, dejando eso de lado el resultado final al verla solo les diré que fue interesante, porque claro hay una diferencia significativa en verla a estas alturas de mi que en comparación en aquel entonces cuando tuve la oportunidad de verla en otro tiempo cuando era un niño de 13 años.

Así que sin mas preámbulo será un placer para mi hablarles en esta ocasión sobre este clásico de la época, espero disfruten la lectura esta vez así que comencemos.

Excalibur is a British-American film, produced in 1981 which is based on the legend of King Arthur and in this case the direction of the film in turn for this feature film, was based on the work of Sir Thomas Malory called The Death of Arthur, This film was directed by John Boorman and apparently was very well received at the box office and managed to collect a total of 34 million dollars, quite well for its time and all with a rather simplistic production and development, apparently such was its impact in the United States particularly in the year of release being the eighteenth highest grossing film.

Excalibur es una película de origen Britanicoestadounidense, producida en 1981 en la cual esta basada en la leyenda del rey Arturo y en este caso la dirección de la película a su vez para este largometraje, se baso en la obra de Sir Thomas Malory llamada La muerte de Arturo, dicha película fue dirigida por John Boorman y al parecer fue muy bien recibida en taquilla logrando recaudar un total de 34 millones de dólares, bastante bien para su época y todo con una producción y elaboración bastante simplista, al parecer tal fue su impacto en los Estados Unidos particularmente en el año del estreno siendo la decimoctava película más taquillera.

Synopsis / Sinopsis

Our story begins at first instance in a warlike conflict by two factions, Uther Pendragon being a representative of one of the factions in conflict receives the help and advice of the wizard Merlin and with his influence in the mystical manages to give this the powerful sword Excalibur by the lady of the lake, and with this he becomes king forming a pact with the enemy faction as long as they recognize him as a figure of authority is a king, however then the carnal desire of Uther for a woman and his ambition, triggered a significant change both in his life and in his land bringing to this world the future king named Arthur which will bring a significant time for his land and his people.

Nuestra historia comienza a primera instancia en un conflicto bélico por parte de dos facciones, Uther Pendragon siendo representante de una de las facciones en conflicto recibe la ayuda y el asesoramiento del mago Merlín y con su influencia en lo místico logra otorgarle a este la poderosa espada Excalibur por la dama del lago, y con esto se convierte en rey formando un pacto con la facción enemiga con tal de que lo reconozcan como una figura de autoridad es decir un rey, sin embargo luego el deseo carnal de Uther por una mujer y su ambición, desencadenara un cambio significativo tanto en su vida como en su tierra trayendo a este mundo al futuro rey llamado Arturo el cual traerá una época significativa para su tierra y su gente.

Personal opinion / Opinión personal

As you know the Arthurian literature has taken a significant impact for a long time in our society, this can be seen well reflected in various series, movies, video game franchises, etc.. How in remote and limited historical records of that time, the character known as Arthur went from being a supposed general with charisma which have very null records about it in a period of war in Britannia what is now Britain, became a king that over time by the hands of other writers with the intention of giving more weight and symbolism to this heroic and brave image being in short a literary character based on a real character for his prowess in combat, and these characters that depending on some versions have some changes but maintain their essence linked to the life of Arthur both in its beginning and in its fateful and warlike end, as in the particular case of this installment to follow or be based mostly on the work of Sir Thomas Malory and in this case with this film is no exception.

Personally I really liked the film, let's start with the story and the development of the same, effectively follows what is represented in the ancient and recent writings or novels that make faith and weight to the figure of Arthur and the characters that accompany him, as well as Merlin, Lancelot, Gawain, Percibal, Morgana, Mordred and others, but the director in this case took the creative freedom to change certain things for his personal convenience based on the work of Sir Thomas for the most part, which for me is not bad because it respects the symbolic line that characterize the people, such changes can be noticed either in the behavior of some people or in slight changes in the plot that are not so consistent with what was represented in the older novels, however as I mentioned the film has the characteristics that is represented and is known mostly in the plot.

Como sabrán la literatura Artúrica ha tomado un impacto significativo durante mucho tiempo en nuestra sociedad, esto se puede ver bien reflejado en diversas series, películas, franquicias de videojuegos, etc. El cómo en remotos y limitados registros históricos de aquella época, a el personaje conocido como Arturo paso de ser un supuesto general con carisma el cual se tienen registros muy nulos sobre ello en un periodo de guerra en Britannia lo que es la actual Gran Bretaña, paso a convertirse en un rey que con el paso del tiempo por manos de otros escritores con la intención de darle más peso y simbolismo a esta imagen heroica y valiente siendo en resumidas cuentas un personaje literario en base a un personaje real por su proesa en el combate, se les agrego un conjunto de elenco de personajes entrañables eh historias asociados a él, y estos personajes que dependiendo de algunas versiones tienen algunos cambios pero mantienen su esencia vinculada con la vida de Arturo tanto en su comienzo como en su fatídico y bélico final, como en el caso particular de esta entrega al seguir o basarse en su mayoría sobre la obra de Sir Thomas Malory y en este caso con este film no es una excepción.

En lo personal me gusto mucho la película, comencemos con su historia y el desarrollo de la misma, efectivamente sigue con lo que se representa en los antiguos y últimos escritos o novelas que le hacen fe y peso a la figura de Arturo y los personajes que le acompañan, así como Merlín, Lancelot, Gawain, Percibal, Morgana, Mordred entre otros, pero el director en este caso se tomo la libertad creativa de cambiar ciertas cosas por su conveniencia personal basándose en la obra de Sir Thomas en su gran mayoría, lo cual para mí no está mal ya que se respeta el lineamiento simbólico que caracterizan a los personas, tales cambios se pueden notar sea en la conducta de algunos personas o en cambios ligeros en la trama que no van tan acorde a lo que se represento en las novelas más antiguas, sin embargo como ya mencione la película tiene las características que se representa y se conoce en su mayoría en la trama .

Another aspect that I liked a lot is the level of detail with the lighting, for an old movie and with a pretty decent budget for its production, I must say that there were several scenes in which they played very well not only at the level of lighting and the game with the same if not with the colors and reactions with the smoke. I also liked the use of music and dialogues, there are some dialogues between the characters as is the case of Merlin and Arthur or Arthur speaking in general, of which I liked a lot either by a free interpretation linked in this case to the values of chivalry and what it means to be one and his way as a king and function before his people to put the rules and justice.

To culminate is a classic film that I recommend, if it was present some changes in the continuity of time in which change abruptly and this is very present in the film when introducing the grail in the plot, which personally is not bad as they played with it, but I would have liked to give more weight as in previous versions this is presented in a different way but not so bad, or the interpersonal interpretations as in the case of Lancelot and his internal struggle between his passion, duty and responsibility that I liked a lot but maybe it can cause some noise when you change the time in which some things are presented, without more to say thank you very much for coming here and I hope you enjoyed the reading, thank you and see you next time.

Otro aspecto que me gusto mucho es el nivel de detalle con la iluminación, para ser una película antigua y con un presupuesto bastante decente para su elaboración, debo decir que estaban presentes varias escenas en las cuales se jugó muy bien no solo a nivel de iluminación y el juego con la misma si no con los colores y reacciones con el humo. Me gusto también el uso de la música y los diálogos, hay algunos diálogos entre los personajes como es el caso de Merlín y Arturo o de Arturo hablando en general, de los cuales me gustaron mucho sea por una libre interpretación ligados en este caso a los valores de la caballería y lo que representa ser uno y su camino como rey y función ante su pueblo de ante poner las reglas y la justicia.

Para culminar es una película clásica que recomiendo, si estaba presente algunos cambios en la continuidad del tiempo en el cual cambian de forma abrupta y esto se ve muy presente en la película a la hora de introducir en la trama el grial, que en lo personal no está mal como jugaron con ello, pero me hubiera gustado que le dieran más peso ya que en las versiones anteriores este se presenta de una forma diferente aunque no esta tan mal, o las interpretaciones interpersonales como en el caso de Lancelot y su lucha interna entre su pasión, deber y responsabilidad que me gustaron mucho pero quizás pueda causar algo de ruido cuando se cambie en el tiempo en el cual se presentan algunas cosas, sin más que decir muchas gracias por llegar hasta aquí y espero haya sido de su agrado la lectura gracias y hasta la próxima.
