Meeke to drive for Škoda in 2022??
Ex-works World Rally Championship driver is in frame for potential driver with Škoda but not as a factory driver because Škoda doesn't compete as a factory team. They do there program but through some of their satellite team, just as Toksport from Germany runs the program for Andreas Mikkelsen.
Kris Meeke is testing with Škoda again and that's cool that he has a driving job again. I watched him for the first time in 2003 when he was driving Opel Corsa Super 1600 in Junior World Rally Championship.
That program hasn't been that successful because the car wasn't reliable enough for super tough rallies as Acropolis Greece. At that time it was Renault Clio S1600 as a top car in JWRC. Meeke's Opel Corsa S1600 just couldn't match the pace and reliability of Renault.
But Meeke showed whole world that he has some qualities and that he is Colin McRae's protegee with reason. Intercontinental Rally Challenge came later and when he won it with Peugeot in 2009, that was the key to open many doors for him.
He finally got the works drive with Mini WRC team ran by Prodrive but not for long because that deal between Prodrive and BMW was too weak to survive.
Some points finished again brought him some bright prospects for the future and that gave him a Citroen drive and then he started to post top results as a works driver.
He scored five WRC wins and the biggest in my eyes was when he won WRC Rally Finland in 2016. He was in clouds after that win but the new generation of Citroen's car wasn't that bright because they just couldn't match the speed of the opposition.
His weakness of too much crashing also didn't help and he finally lost his drive in 2018 after several shunts. All that good rallies gave him one more shot and it was the top team of Toyota.
It was obvious that he lost some confidence in that final year with Toyota because the results were lacking. And that was it.
Later he tried Dakar series but no more in the World Rally Championship.
Now he has a chance to be in WRC again but not in the top class but WRC2 class, the same that Andreas Mikkelsen contests this season.
Following months will tell us more about Meeke's plans...
