What to name this one © Bratty Melt?

Living in the deep south, I don't often run across bratwurst but when I do, I dig deep and pay the high import prices for it. The other day I had beer brats with my youngest and today I took the couple that were left over and split them.

Just like on a patty melt, you butter the rye bread and build the sandwich in the pan.

  1. rye bread butter side down
  2. gouda or cheddar cheese
  3. split bratwurst
  4. grilled onions (I used chives for this one)
  5. cheese again
  6. rye bread butter side up
switch 1 and 6 if you want to build it upside-down

It makes just like a grilled cheese sandwich, flipping until each side is toasted.

Then...

It's time to eat those bad boys!

This is the same recipe I use to make the classic patty melt which is served in most mid-western diners in the Land of the "Free" and home of the two tier justice system.

Is it only rye bread which can be used for this?

You can use any sliced bread for a patty melt. Use a hamburger patty or split hot dogs if you want. They are also delicious with just the bread and cheese. I grew up on "toasted cheese sandwiches" and soup.

That new "Cangreburger" recipe looks delicious @sponge-bob. Greetings from "The Bikini Bottom" here in Venezuela.
