Domain expertise is an underappreciated good. We tend to underestimate the huge knowledge gap between an amateur and someone who is passionate and has built expertise in a matter, any matter including sweets

That is precisely the case. There is nothing like passion to drive skill accumulation.
Interestingly, the Finnish Defense Forces systematically collects this information. We've had universal conscription since the the beginning of independence in 1917. We were given a form before our appointment at the recruitment office where education as well as hobbies were asked.
