Tonight I want to show you this beauty. I think all of us cactus lovers have always wanted to have one of these, to tell you the truth I didn't know what species it was until one day it bloomed and Voila! This wonderful flower. We had it among all our species, without giving it special treatment. Until one day last year, I was about to water one morning and when I went to the cactus area I noticed this impressive flower.

Esta noche les quiero enseñar esta belleza. Creo que todos los aficionados a los cactus siempre hemos querido tener una de estas, a decir verdad no sabía qué especie era hasta que un día floreció y ¡Voila! Esta maravillosa flor. La teníamos entre todas nuestras especies, sin darle un trato especial. Hasta que un día del año pasado, me disponía a regar en una mañana y cuando fui hasta el área de los cactus noté esta impresionante Flor.
The first thing I did was to call the family members to admire it, we were all very excited and we took it out of its usual place to place it in one where it could be better contemplated. Then I reached for my smartphone and took a picture of it, because I knew I was about to open these amazing plus, I wanted to know which species specifically it was.
Lo primero que hice fue llamar a los miembros de la familia para que la admiraran, todos quedamos muy emocionados y la sacamos de su lugar habitual para colocarla en uno donde se pudiera contemplar mejor. Luego busqué mi smartphone y le tome una foto, porque sabía que estaba a punto de abrir estos increíbles además, quería saber cual especie específicamente era.
To bring you a little closer to this species I want to comment that they are plants that do not reach great heights, but if they grow in width (Then I looked at many on the internet) Its stem is quite intense green, at least in this species. It is a very beautiful plant, but its particularity is in its flower, with flat star-shaped and that grows from the base of these plants, usually in large species. They are large flowers that can measure between 5 to 40 cm in size.
Para acercarlos un poco a esta especie les quiero comentar que son plantas que no alcanzan grandes alturas, pero si crecen a lo ancho (Luego me fije en muchas en internet) Su tallo es de un verde bastante intenso, al menos en esta especie. Es una planta muy hermosa, pero su particularidad está en su flor, con forma de estrella plana y que crece desde la base de estas plantas, por lo general en las especies grandes. Son unas flores grandes que pueden medir de entre 5 a 40 cm de tamaño.
A curious fact about these plants is that they depend on insects for pollination (entomophilous) and that is why they emanate a rather unpleasant odor, similar to that of rotting meat in order to attract flies and other insects. And it is for this reason that they are also called "Star of the flies".
Un dato curioso de estas plantas es que dependen de los insectos para su polinización (entomófilas) y es por esto que emanan un olor bastante desagradable, parecido al de la carne podrida con la finalidad de atraer moscas y otros insectos. Y es por esta razón es que también la llaman “Estrella de la moscas”
Ours is of the species STAPELIA GIGANTEA and of course, it owes its name to the fact that its petals are immense, varying from 10 to 40 cm wide, it is one of the best known species. If you look closely, its petals are yellow or cream colored, with red striations and lined by a dense fuzz.
La nuestra es de la especie STAPELIA GIGANTEA y claro, debe su nombre a que sus pétalos son inmensos, varía de entre los 10 a los 40 cm de ancho, es una de las especies más conocidas. Si observan bien, sus pétalos son de color amarillo color o crema, con unas estrías color rojo y forrados por una pelusa densa.
This is a perennial plant and blooms in the summer period, they need to be exposed to the sun to encourage their formation and flowering. We usually keep our cacti in the part of the garden where the sun shines the most during the whole year. We keep it watered, especially when it is dry weather and we have taken cuttings to multiply it and it has worked wonderfully.
Esta es una planta perenne y florece en el periodo de verano , necesitan estar expuestas al sol para incentivar su formación y floración. Nosotros solemos tener nuestros cactus en la parte del jardín donde más llega el sol durante todo el año. La mantenemos regada, sobre todo cuando es tiempo de sequía y hemos sacado esquejes para multiplicarla y ha funcionado de maravilla.
