The Main Market of the city of Mérida - Venezuela / El Mercado Principal de la ciudad de Mérida – Venezuela

You always read in the travel guides that when you visit any city, the best thing to get a general overview of the site, its idiosyncrasy, is to go to see its market. I usually follow that advice and the first time I went to Mérida, a long time ago, I toured its facilities.

Siempre se lee en las guías viajeras que cuando visitas cualquier ciudad, lo mejor para tener un panorama general del sitio, de su idiosincracia, es ir a conocer su mercado. Yo suelo seguir ese consejo y la primera vez que fui a Mérida, hace tiempo ya, recorrí sus instalaciones.

The Main Market of Mérida, located on Las Américas Avenue in this Venezuelan Andean city, is a fairly large structure, with three levels and about 450 establishments. I went shortly before noon with the intention of walking around their areas and then having lunch in one of the restaurants with typical foods of the region that are there.

El Mercado Principal de Mérida, ubicado en la Av. Las Américas de esta ciudad andina venezolana, es una estructura bastante grande, con tres niveles y unos 450 establecimientos. Yo fui poco antes del mediodía con la intención de pasear por sus áreas y luego almorzar en uno de los restaurantes con comidas típicas de la región que están ahí.

There it is explained what one of the famous drinks of this area of the country contains: the Levantón Andino, which they say increases libido. The truth is that it's a quite extravagant mixture of ingredients, which I didn't try hahaha...

Allí se explica qué contiene una de las famosas bebidas de esta zona del país: el Levantón Andino, que según dicen aumenta la líbido. Lo cierto es que es una mezcla de ingredientes bastante extravagante, la cual no probé jajaja…

That is how I began my walk through the aisles of the market and I found the part where the fruits and vegetables are found. Mérida is one of the largest agricultural producers in the country, it supplies a large part of the national market.

Comencé así mi paseo por los pasillos del mercado y me encontré con la parte donde se encuentran las frutas y vegetales. Mérida es uno de los mayores productores agrícolas en el país, surte gran parte del mercado nacional.

Apart from vegetables and fresh and dried fruits (dehydrated), the first level is where you can buy the famous Andean pastries, Andean arepas, empanadas, pisca (a soup), Andean chicha (drink), natural juices, wines such as blackberry, flowers, sweets and some crafts.

Aparte de hortalizas y frutas frescas y secas (deshidratadas), en el primer nivel es donde se pueden comprar los famosos pastelitos andinos, arepas andinas, empanadas, pizca andina, chicha andina, jugos naturales, vinos como el de mora, flores, dulces y algunas artesanías.

Then on the second and third floors there are restaurants, butchers and delicatessens, shops that sell clothes, blankets, coats, jackets, gloves and hats to face the cold of this region and many more craft stalls than on the first level.

Luego en el segundo y tercer piso hay restaurantes, carnicerías y charcuterías, tiendas que venden ropa, cobijas, abrigos, chaquetas, guantes y gorros para afrontar el frío de esta región y muchos más puestos de artesanías que en el primer nivel.

In addition to tasting a typical dish from Mérida, my intention when I came to the market was also to buy some handicrafts and typical sweets such as abrillantados, which are milk sweets covered with a layer of crystallized and colored sugar.

Además de degustar un plato típico de Mérida, mi intención al venir al mercado era también comprar alguna artesanía y dulces típicos como los abrillantados, que son dulces de leche cubiertos con una capa de azúcar cristalizado y de colores.

There are many beautiful things to take as souvenirs, such as wood carvings, paintings, rag dolls, or textiles. I bought several sweets and some small crafts.

Hay muchas cosas hermosas para llevar como souvenir, como las piezas talladas en madera, pinturas, las muñecas de trapo o los tejidos. Yo compré varios dulces y algunas artesanías pequeñas.

Something that caught my attention is how modern the infrastructure of the place is, because normally the markets tend to be older places. Later I did some research on the Internet and read that since the 19th century this market was in the center of Mérida but due to a fire that occurred in 1987 that completely destroyed that headquarters, the authorities instead of rebuilding it decided to build a new building elsewhere from the city.

Algo que me llamó la atención es lo moderna que es la infraestructura del lugar, porque normalmente los mercados suelen ser sitios más antiguos. Después investigué un poco en Internet y leí que desde el siglo XIX este mercado estaba en el centro de Mérida pero debido a un incendio ocurrido en 1987 que destruyó por completo esa sede, las autoridades en vez de reconstruirlo decidieron hacer un edificio nuevo en otra parte de la ciudad.

It is currently one of the most visited places in the capital of Mérida due to the variety of products it offers.

Actualmente es uno de los lugares más visitados de la capital de Mérida por la variedad de productos que ofrece.

I ended my visit to the market eating one of the typical dishes: trout, a freshwater fish that is produced here in different hatcheries.

Yo finalicé mi visita al mercado comiendo uno de los platos típicos: trucha, un pez de agua dulce que se produce aquí en distintos criaderos.
