Some sloths in the city / Unos perezosos en la ciudad

When we live in a big city sometimes we don't realize that apart from us humans, there are other beings that make life here, in spaces that, although mixed with cement, still preserve a lot of greenery and allow their existence.

Cuando vivimos en una gran ciudad a veces no nos percatamos de que aparte de nosotros los humanos, hay otros seres que hacen vida en la urbe, en espacios que aunque mezclados con cemento aún conservan mucho verdor y permiten su existencia.

In Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, there are some spaces that can show you a little of the biodiversity that this country has, located in the ninth position worldwide for its variety of animals and plants. This time I'm going to tell you about my encounters with an animal with a serene smile and gentle movements: the sloth.

En Caracas, la capital de Venezuela, hay algunos espacios que te pueden mostrar un poco de la biodiversidad que tiene este país, ubicado en la novena posición a nivel mundial por su variedad de animales y plantas. En esta ocasión les voy a hablar de mis encuentros con un animal de serena sonrisa y suaves movimientos: el perezoso.

During the time I worked in Bellas Artes area, it was common any day to see specimens of this mammal among the trees that are in the gardens of the Science Museum and Los Caobos Park.

Durante el tiempo que trabajé en la zona de Bellas Artes, era común cualquier día ver ejemplares de este mamífero entre los árboles que están por los jardines del Museo de Ciencias y el Parque Los Caobos.

The first time I saw a sloth there, I was working at the Science Museum and we had to call the people of Inparques (National Parks Institute) because one of them, with her baby on her back, had fallen from a tree very tall and injured, unable to move much on the ground.

La primera vez que vi una pereza allí, yo trabajaba en el Museo de Ciencias y tuvimos que llamar a la gente de Inparques (Instituto Nacional de Parques) porque una de ellas, con su cría en la espalda, se había caído de un árbol muy alto y estaba herida, sin poder moverse mucho en el suelo.

They arrived, took her away for medical attention and later informed us that unfortunately the mother had died, but the baby was in good condition and later they could release it somewhere suitable to live freely. I remember touching her fur and it was rough.

Ellos llegaron, se la llevaron para darle atención médica y luego nos informaron que lamentablemente la madre había muerto, pero la cría se encontraba en buenas condiciones y más adelante podrían soltarla en algún lugar apto para que viviera libremente. Recuerdo que toqué su pelaje y era áspero.

The three-toed sloth, scientifically known as Bradypus tridactylus, is one of the six types of sloths that inhabit Central and South America. It lives in the trees, using its claws to support itself and hang on trunks and branches, since it has no ability to move on the ground, and its food is also found in the heights (vegetable matter such as leaves).

El perezoso de tres dedos, conocido científicamente como Bradypus tridactylus, es uno de los seis tipos de perezosos que habitan en Centro y Sur América. Vive en los árboles, utilizando sus garras para sostenerse y colgarse en troncos y ramas, ya que no tiene ninguna habilidad para desplazarse en el suelo, además su comida también la encuentra en las alturas (materias vegetales como las hojas).

It's quite amazing to see them moving through the trees with that slowness that characterizes them, as if they didn't care at all about the accelerated pace of the city in which they are. Perhaps it is also because few people notice that they are there, if they don't descend too much from the trees, you must look carefully up to see if you can locate any, the color of their fur tends to camouflage them very well.

Es bastante asombroso verlos movilizarse entre los árboles con aquella lentitud que los caracteriza, como si no les importara para nada el ritmo acelerado de la ciudad en la que se encuentran. Quizás es también porque poca gente nota que están allí, si no bajan demasiado de los árboles, es preciso que mires con atención hacia arriba a ver si logras ubicar alguno, el color de su pelaje suele camuflarlos muy bien.

Among the peculiarities that sloths present we have that they can turn their heads at 360 degrees, they don't control their body temperature but it changes depending on the environment in which they are and their hair is totally resistant to water.

Entre las particularidades que presentan los perezosos tenemos que pueden girar sus cabezas a 360 grados, no controlan su temperatura corporal sino que esta cambia dependiendo del entorno en el que estén y su pelo es totalmente resistente al agua.

It is a very calm, peaceful animal, therefore also vulnerable. If you come across one that has fallen from a tree, help it climb back up by lifting it under the armpits and placing it on the trunk, and if one has gone down the tree a lot that you could touch it, don't do it, just watch it and let it go on with its routine without disturbing it.

Es un animal muy tranquilo, pacífico, por eso también vulnerable. Si te encuentras con alguno que se ha caído de un árbol, ayúdalo a subir de nuevo alzándolo por debajo de las axilas y colocándolo en el tronco, y si alguno ha bajado tanto del árbol que podrías tocarlo, no lo hagas, sólo obsérvalo y déjalo seguir en su rutina sin perturbarlo.
