Greetings to the entire Architecture+Design community! This is my first post here, it had already taken me a while to write something, I'm a big fan of architecture, especially modern architecture, I think that if I hadn't studied journalism, my thing would be architecture.

Among the buildings of that style that I like, I think those of the Brazilian Oscar Niemeyer are in the first place, especially after having had the opportunity to see some of his works live and direct, something that made my admiration grow more.

In this post I will show you the buildings designed by him that I visited in Rio de Janeiro and Sâo Paulo when I was backpacking in Brazil. When planning my itinerary through this great South American country, I wrote down in which parts that I was going to pass there were works by Niemeyer, so as not to miss them.

But who is Oscar Niemeyer? I will make a brief review of his life, not easy because he did many works and worked until the end of his life, at 104 years of age.

Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1907, he graduated as an architect in 1934 and then worked with the great French master of modern architecture, Le Corbusier, on the project for the new Ministry of Education and Health in Rio de Janeiro, something that marked his life and influenced his work in the future.

The most notable feature in Niemeyer's designs is undoubtedly the curve, he himself explained: "I am not attracted to the angle and the inflexible straight line created by man. I am more attracted to sensual curves that flow freely. I find it in the mountains of my country, in its winding rivers, in the waves of the ocean and in the body of the beloved woman. The curves form the entire universe, Einstein's curved universe. "

During his life he built almost 500 works between public and private in various countries of the world, a truly impressive number, the most emblematic being the new capital city of his country, Brasilia, founded in 1960 and designed from scratch in the middle of nowhere.

Now let's go back to my tour of some of his works. The first one I went to see was the Niteroi Museum of Contemporary Art. Being in the center of Rio de Janeiro I took a ferry in Praça XV de Novembro to go to this city that is to the east.

About 20 minutes later I was there and I asked at the terminal how I could get to the museum, but before that I came across another work by Niemeyer that was nearby: the Popular Theater. When I saw its curves I said to myself: it must be one of his works and when I got closer I checked it, it was a pity that it was closed that day, that's why I couldn't go inside and see it inside, however I took several photos of it from the outside.

Then I took a bus to go to the museum, it was not very far, the road there is very beautiful, bordering the sea.

Upon arriving at the Niteroi Museum of Contemporary Art, I felt on another planet, that structure was challenging, you had to see it closely, it seemed that at any moment it was going to take off.

In its 2,000 square meters of surface concrete seems to express itself without limits, Niemeyer said the following about this project completed in 1996: «The terrain was narrow, surrounded by the sea and the solution occurred naturally, having as a starting point the inevitable central support. From it, the architecture happened spontaneously like a flower. The view towards the sea was beautiful and you had to take advantage of it. I suspended the building and under it the panorama spread even richer. I then defined the profile of the museum. A line that is born from the ground and without interruption grows and unfolds, sensual, until the coverage. The shape of the building, which I always imagined to be circular, became fixed and inside I stopped passionately. Around the museum I created a gallery open to the sea, repeating it on the second floor, like a sloping mezzanine above the great exhibition hall ». (Source of the quote: brochure they gave me at the museum)

When I wanted to enter, again: closed... but what happens that everything is closed? Hahaha as I was on vacation I hadn't realized that it was Monday, and on Monday all museums are closed for maintenance. Well at least I was able to see it very well from the outside and take several pictures, it doesn't take much effort to capture beautiful shots, this place is 100% photogenic.

They told me that its lighting is spectacular at night, but I couldn't stay to see it, it will be for the next time I visit Brazil.

The other work by Niemeyer that I got to know on my trip to Brazil was the Ibirapuera Auditorium, which is in Ibirapuera Park, in the city of Sâo Paulo.

This park is the green lung of this busy and populated city, a place full of greenery and free from the typical noises of large cities.

Among other buildings, there is the Ibirapuera Auditorium, built between 2002 and 2005, although it was designed by Niemeyer in the 1950s.

It has a capacity for just over 800 people and its appearance of clean forms also seems from another planet, especially its entrance door, truly amazing.

There is also the Lucas Nogueira Garcez Pavilion, better known as OCA, where exhibitions are held. This building was also designed in the 1950s by Oscar Niemeyer.

Completed in 1954, its reinforced concrete structure is circular in shape, like a shell, with several windows also circular in its walls to allow natural lighting.

And well, these were the four works by Niemeyer that I got to know in Brazil, undoubtedly a construction artist who marked the landscape of his country with imagination and beauty, remaining in history as one of the greats of modern architecture at the level world.

Greetings @sofathana! It's a delight to see you posting here for the first time. So, I'd like to warmly welcome you to the Architecture+Design Community!

The Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer is undoubtedly one of the world's most beloved masters during his prime and until today. His iconic projects capitalized on the Curve thus, creating buildings that are uniquely otherworldly in appearance. It's difficult not to appreciate and be attracted by his distinctive architectural style - which has definitely set him apart from the other architects around the world. The photo you've captured below is my favorite one. (Looks like an alien spacecraft about to take off to another planet...hehe.) It must have been a spellbinding experience for you to be there! Thank you for this remarkable publication!

Thank you @storiesoferne!!! The truth is that I wanted to see more, but due to lack of budget and more vacation days, I couldn't appreciate his most famous work: Brasilia, I hope to be able to go one day. But of course, I thoroughly enjoyed the works I saw :)

You gave me a reason to pay attention to the postage stamps depicting famous architects, I am sure that on one of them I can find Oscar Niemeyer. This guy. apparently, he was a great dreamer and futurism was an integral part of his blood). Thank you for the fascinating story and for showing the wonderful buildings! Blessings!
