Abandoned places are already surrounded by a particular atmosphere, it seems to me, and by showing them in black and white I think that what they transmit to each person is intensified.

Ya de por sí los lugares abandonados están rodeados de una particular atmósfera, me parece a mí, y al mostrarlos en blanco y negro creo que lo que transmiten a cada persona, se intensifica.

I don't usually take this kind of pictures, my thing is landscapes, nature, but some time ago I was doing a documentary work for which I was hired and I had to record in images some places in ruins. I confess that I liked the experience and since then I focus more on this kind of locations.

No suelo tomar este tipo de fotografías, lo mío son los paisajes, la naturaleza, pero tiempo atrás estaba haciendo un trabajo documental para el que fui contratada y me tocó registrar en imágenes unos lugares en ruinas. Confieso que me gustó la experiencia y desde entonces me fijo más en este tipo de locaciones.

The shots I will give details of below are from a sector of Macarao, in the southwest of Caracas (Venezuela), where there are some old buildings that are part of the history of this town.

Las tomas de las que daré detalles a continuación son de un sector de Macarao, en el suroeste de Caracas (Venezuela), donde se encuentran unas construcciones antiguas que forman parte de la historia de este pueblo.

The walls that are still standing after more than 200 years are what remains of the house that belonged to the sister of the Liberator Simón Bolívar.

Las paredes que se ven allí aún en pie luego de más de 200 años, son lo que queda de la casa que pertenecía a la hermana del Libertador Simón Bolívar.

The people who accompanied me on the tour told me that this place is known as La Casa del León (The Lion's House) because at one time two stuffed lions were placed at the entrance door, quite grotesque, isn't it?

La gente que me acompañó en el recorrido me comentó que este lugar es conocido como La Casa del León porque en una época en la puerta de entrada estaban colocados dos leones disecados, ¿bastante grotesco no?

Notice that in some of these shots there are blurred parts, it's not an editing effect, it's the camera that was out of focus at that moment, I think it gives the scenes a ghostly touch.

Noten que en algunas de estas tomas hay partes borrosas, no es ningún efecto de edición, es la cámara que presentó fallas de foco en ese momento, creo que da a las escenas un toque fantasmagórico.

The people who live near this house in ruins but with patrimonial value, have wanted to recover it for years to have a cultural space for their community but so far it hasn't been possible. From there you have a panoramic view of this neighborhood of Macarao.

La gente que vive cerca de esta casa en ruinas pero con valor patrimonial, hace años que la quieren recuperar para tener un espacio cultural para su comunidad pero hasta ahora no ha sido posible. Desde allí se tiene una panorámica de este vecindario de Macarao.

Then we went to another sector to visit another emblematic but forgotten place. Contrasts are seen everywhere here, on the one hand houses built haphazardly on the hills and on the other better planned urbanism and roads.

Luego nos fuimos a otro sector para visitar otro lugar emblemático pero olvidado. Los contrastes se ven por todas partes aquí, por un lado casas construidas desordenadamente en los cerros y por otro urbanismos y vías mejor planificados.

We arrived at the site and the mill is the first thing that stands out there, around it there are some precariously built houses, a man who lives there and takes care of this old construction opened a gate for us to know it closely.

Llegamos al sitio y el trapiche es lo primero que destaca allí, a su alrededor hay unas viviendas precariamente construidas, un señor que vive allí y cuida esta vieja construcción nos abrió una reja para conocerlo de cerca.

Many sugar mills were built in Venezuela after the arrival of the Spanish colonizers because sugar cane was one of the crops introduced to the country. Sugar cane quickly became a product that yielded great economic dividends from the XVIII century until the beginning of the XX century.

En Venezuela se levantaron muchos trapiches luego de la llegada de los colonizadores españoles porque la caña de azúcar fue uno de los cultivos que se introdujeron al país. Rápidamente se convirtió en un producto que dejó grandes dividendos económicos desde el siglo XVIII hasta inicios del XX.

Some adobe walls still survive here and vegetation has taken over much of the land surrounding the mill, making everything look more mysterious.

Algunas paredes de adobe todavía sobreviven por aquí y la vegetación se ha apoderado de gran parte del terreno que rodea al trapiche haciendo que todo luzca más misterioso.

The community also wants to recover this mill to make it visitable, as a small museum. I think its condition is not so bad after all and it would be an attraction to bring visitors to their area, hopefully they can move forward on that.

La comunidad también quiere recuperar este trapiche para hacerlo visitable, como un pequeño museo. Creo que sus condiciones no son tan malas después de todo y sería un atractivo para atraer visitantes a su zona, ojalá puedan lograrlo.
