My route through the Paria Peninsula, Venezuela - Part II: Río Caribe [ENG-ESP]

Greetings traveling community! I share the second part of this trip that I made to Sucre state, specifically to the Paria peninsula, eastern Venezuela, a place that has much to explore and with an extraordinary green coast.

¡Saludos comunidad viajera! Comparto la segunda parte de este viaje que hice al estado Sucre, específicamente a la península de Paria, oriente venezolano, un lugar que tiene mucho para explorar y con una costa verde extraordinaria.

As I related in my previous post, we left in the morning from Carúpano to the town of Río Caribe, which is about 22 km away. I was always curious to know what this place was like because my first years of life were spent in a building in Caracas called “Río Caribe”.

Como relaté en mi anterior publicación, salimos en la mañana desde Carúpano hacia la población de Río Caribe, que está a unos 22 km. Siempre tuve curiosidad por conocer cómo era este lugar porque mis primeros años de vida los pasé en un edificio en Caracas llamado “Río Caribe”.

We went to the center of Carúpano, we took a bus and almost always having the sea on one side of the road during the journey, we reached Río Caribe in just over half an hour, before noon and with bright sunshine.

Fuimos al centro de Carúpano, tomamos un autobús y teniendo casi siempre el mar a un lado de la carretera durante el trayecto, llegamos a Río Caribe en poco más de media hora, antes del mediodía y con sol radiante.

My first impression of the town was that of a very cozy place, with a slow pace and with beautiful streets among trees, vegetation, colonial architecture and a breeze with the smell of the sea. As I read it was founded approximately in 1713.

Mi primera impresión del pueblo fue la de un lugar muy acogedor, de ritmo pausado y con bonitas calles entre árboles, vegetación, arquitectura colonial y brisa con olor a mar. Según leí fue fundado aproximadamente en 1713.

We didn't have a hotel reservation here either, as it wasn't high season I was sure it would be easy to get. We got off on the main street and asked where there were inns, then nearby we found a large two-story house on a corner. We checked the price of the room, my mom and I thought it was fine and we paid to stay there for five days. The owner was Swiss, the widow of a Venezuelan and she had been in the country for many years.

Aquí tampoco teníamos una reserva de hotel, como no era temporada alta estaba segura de que sería fácil conseguir. Nos bajamos en la calle principal y preguntamos dónde había posadas, entonces por ahí cerca nos conseguimos en una esquina una gran casa de dos pisos. Consultamos precio de la habitación, a mi mamá y a mí nos pareció bien y pagamos para quedarnos allí por cinco días. La dueña era suiza, viuda de un venezolano y tenía muchos años en el país.

Our room was on the second floor and we had a nice view towards some streets of the town, but the surrounding mountains and the shapes in the sky were also attractive.

Nuestra habitación estaba en el segundo piso y teníamos una agradable vista hacia unas calles del pueblo, pero las montañas alrededor y las formas en el cielo eran también atractivas.

We put on our swimsuits, light clothes and went out to eat something simple and then went to a nearby beach recommended by the owner of the inn: Los Cocos beach.

Nos pusimos nuestros trajes de baño, una ropa ligera y salimos a comer algo sencillo para luego irnos a una playa cercana que nos recomendó la dueña de la posada: Playa Los Cocos.

At around 2:00 in the afternoon, we took a bus near the Rio Caribe boardwalk to take our first swim in these waters of the Paria peninsula.

Como a las 2:00 de la tarde tomamos un autobús cerca del malecón de Río Caribe para ir a darnos nuestro primer baño por estas aguas de la península de Paria.

We arrived in less than 10 minutes and we found a huge beach, more than a kilometer long, with wind and small waves breaking on the shore.

Llegamos en menos de 10 minutos y nos encontramos con una playa enorme, más de un kilómetro de longitud, con viento y pequeñas olas que rompían en la orilla.

There were few people and we were able to choose a good place to spend the afternoon. The beach has many coconut trees, that's why it is called that and to protect yourself from the sun you can sit under umbrellas made with dried palm leaves.

Había poca gente y pudimos elegir un buen lugar para pasar la tarde. La playa tiene muchos cocoteros, por eso se llama así y para resguardarte del sol te puedes sentar bajo unas sombrillas hechas con hojas secas de palmeras.

Everything was going well until we approached the shore to get into the water and we saw that there were a lot of strange creatures ...

Todo iba bien hasta que nos acercamos a la orilla para meternos al agua y vimos que había un montón de extrañas criaturas…

They seemed made of silicone, I was very surprised by these beings, they didn't seem real. My mom grabbed a stick that she found out there to touch one and see if it would move, but no. A person who worked on the beach told us that they were “aguamalas” and that at that time the sea was throwing them away, dead, who knows why.

Parecían hechas de silicona, me sorprendieron mucho estos seres, no parecían reales. Mi mamá agarró un palo que encontró por ahí para tocar uno y ver si se movía, pero no. Una persona que trabajaba en la playa nos dijo que eran “aguamalas” y que en esa época el mar las botaba, muertas, quién sabe por qué.

This species of jellyfish is big, look at its size compared to my foot:

Despite that, I went into the sea for a while, as they were already dead, there was no danger of them hitting me. I remembered that when we were little, my sister got one on her leg and it hurt a lot, that's why when I saw one floating near me, I would walk away from it. My mom preferred to just dip her feet in the water and sit on the shore to cool off.

A pesar de eso yo entré un rato al mar, como ya estaban muertas, no había peligro de que se me pegaran encima. Recordé que cuando éramos chiquitas a mi hermana se le pegó una en la pierna y le dolió mucho, por eso si veía flotar alguna cerca me alejaba. Mi mamá prefirió sólo meter un poco los pies en el agua y sentarse en la orilla para refrescarse.

We enjoyed the beach almost until 5:00 in the afternoon and returned to Río Caribe to get a supply. There was a refrigerator in the inn, so we could store some things like yogurt, cheese, and drinks.

Disfrutamos la playa casi hasta las 5:00 de la tarde y regresamos a Río Caribe para ir a un abasto. En la posada había nevera, así que podíamos guardar algunas cosas como yogurt, queso y bebidas.

As it was still early, we also took the opportunity to get to know the town a little, anyway, the next day we planned to visit it in more detail and we also had an invitation pending.

Como aún era temprano también aprovechamos para conocer un poco el pueblo, de todas maneras al día siguiente pensábamos recorrerlo con más detalle y además teníamos una invitación pendiente.

It turns out that when we arrived in Sucre state and we were one day at the Cumaná bus terminal ready to go to Carúpano, I was surprised to meet a former co-worker, Mr. Jorge Saim, he was also surprised to see me there, it was fun. He was from Río Caribe but he had lived in Caracas for years, he told me that he returned to his town and was working in the oil industry of Carúpano, then he told me that when we were in Río Caribe we would call him, he wanted to invite us to have lunch at his house.

Resulta que cuando llegamos al estado Sucre y estábamos un día en el terminal de autobuses de Cumaná listas para ir a Carúpano, me llevé una sorpresa al encontrarme con un ex compañero de trabajo, el señor Jorge Saim, él también se sorprendió al verme allí, fue muy divertido. Él era de Río Caribe pero tenía años viviendo en Caracas, me contó que se regresó a su pueblo y estaba trabajando en la industria petrolera de Carúpano, entonces me dijo que cuando estuviéramos en Río Caribe lo llamáramos, nos quería invitar a almorzar a su casa.

The next day my mother and I got up early, we went to have some delicious empanadas for breakfast in a nearby place and then we started our walk through the town, walking along Bermudez Avenue, the main one in town.

Al día siguiente mi mamá y yo nos levantamos temprano, fuimos a desayunar unas ricas empanadas en un local cercano y luego comenzamos nuestro paseo por el pueblo, caminando por la avenida Bermudez, la principal del pueblo.

The old colonial houses, most of them well preserved and painted in striking colors, are the protagonists of Río Caribe.

Las viejas casas coloniales, la mayoría bien conservadas y pintadas en llamativos colores, son las protagonistas de Río Caribe.

We continue along the avenue and arrive at Plaza Sucre, surrounded by palm trees and gardens, a place that pays tribute to Antonio José de Sucre, the Great Marshal of Ayacucho born in Cumaná in 1795, hero of Spanish-American independence.

Continuamos por la avenida y llegamos a la Plaza Sucre, rodeada de palmeras y jardines, un lugar que rinde homenaje a Antonio José de Sucre, el Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho nacido en Cumaná en 1795, héroe de la independencia hispanoamericana.

At the end of the avenue is the most active place that Rio Caribe has, the fishing port, its main economic source.

Al final de la avenida está el lugar más activo que tiene Río Caribe, el puerto pesquero, su principal fuente económica.

There were many people watching the catch of the day and deciding what to buy, there were also the birds watching the discarded pieces to fill their stomachs without so much effort.

Había mucha gente viendo la pesca del día y decidiendo qué comprar, también estaban las aves vigilando los pedazos descartados para llenar sus estómagos sin tanto esfuerzo.

Our walk continued towards the boardwalk, which begins next to the fishing port and is quite long, with a beautiful view of the sea.

Nuestro paseo continuó hacia el malecón, que se inicia al lado del puerto pesquero y es bastante largo, con una hermosa vista al mar.

It was almost noon, time for our lunch with my former co-worker, Mr. Saim, or well Saim, because neither I nor the others who were his colleagues called him "sir" hehehe, we simply called him by his surname of Lebanese origin. He was waiting for us at his house, which was very close to the inn where we stayed, so it was not difficult to find it.

Ya era casi mediodía, hora para nuestro almuerzo con mi ex compañero de trabajo, el señor Saim, o bueno Saim, porque ni yo ni los demás que fuimos sus compañeros le decíamos "señor" jejeje, simplemente lo llamábamos por su apellido de origen libanés. Nos esperaba en su casa, que quedaba muy cerca de la posada donde nos alojamos, así que no fue difícil encontrarla.

Saim is an architect so his house, an old colonial-style building, was very well preserved. I really like the internal courtyards of these houses, with trees and gardens that give a lot of freshness to the environment.

Saim es arquitecto así que su casa, una vieja edificación de estilo colonial, estaba muy bien conservada. Me gustan mucho los patios internos de estas viviendas, con árboles y jardines que le dan mucha frescura al ambiente.

We also met Saim's mother, a very funny and joking lady, she was over 90 years old. The lunch was very tasty, the lady who was in charge of cooking at the house made fish as the main dish and various contours to accompany it, including tropical fruit juice and dessert.

Conocimos también a la mamá de Saim, una señora muy divertida y bromista, tenía más de 90 años. El almuerzo estaba muy sabroso, la señora que se encargaba de cocinar en la casa hizo pescado como plato principal y varios contornos para acompañar, incluyendo jugo de frutas tropicales y postre.

After this pleasant moment, we went to the inn to rest a bit and then we went out again to see more places in Río Caribe.

Después de este grato momento nos fuimos a la posada a descansar un poco y luego volvimos a salir para conocer más lugares de Río Caribe.

I wanted to go to Cristo Rey, a religious monument that is in one of the highest mountains of the town and from where you can have a panoramic view, but when I asked some people they told me that a robbery had occurred in those days there and that it wasn't safe to visit. I would have gone anyway, with a taxi, but since my mom heard about the theft, she refused to go, so to avoid problems with her, I decided to quit for that time. At least I was able to take a photo of it from afar, since it can be seen from many points in Río Caribe.

Yo quería ir al Cristo Rey, un monumento religioso que está en una de las montañas más altas del pueblo y desde donde se puede tener una vista panorámica, pero al preguntar a unas personas me dijeron que había ocurrido un robo en esos días allí y que no era seguro visitarlo. Yo hubiese ido de todas formas, con un taxi, pero como mi mamá escuchó eso del robo se negó a ir, así que para evitar problemas con ella, decidí renunciar esa vez. Al menos pude hacerle una foto desde lejos, ya que se ve desde muchos puntos de Río Caribe.

During our walk we came across some colorful carts full of bottles of liquids of different colors. They are the “esnobores” vendors, who prepare by filling a plastic cup with slush ice to which the liquid is then poured from the bottles according to the flavor that the person chooses.

Durante nuestro paseo nos topamos con unos coloridos carritos llenos de botellas de líquidos de distintos colores. Son los vendedores de “esnobores”, los cuales se preparan llenando un vasito plástico con hielo granizado al que después se le echa el líquido de las botellas según el sabor que la persona elija.

There are coconut, lemon, tamarind, strawberry, cola, passion fruit and many more, they are something traditional from Río Caribe, perfect to cool off on hot afternoons. In other parts of Venezuela, the esnobores, an expression that degenerated from the English “snow ball” are known as “cepillados” or “raspaos”.

Hay de coco, limón, tamarindo, fresa, cola, parchita y muchos más, son algo tradicional de Río Caribe, perfectos para refrescarse en las tardes calurosas. En otras partes de Venezuela, los esnobores, expresión que se degeneró del inglés “snow ball” (bola de nieve) son conocidos como “cepillados” o “raspaos”.

Another thing that you see around here is the house-to-house sale of different products, such as peanuts, cocoa, bread, fresh fish and many more. For example, this man went with his bicycle with cava selling fish, there he cleaned it and delivered it to the client.

Otra cosa que se ve por acá es la venta casa por casa de distintos productos, como por ejemplo maní, cacao, pan, pescado fresco y muchos más. Por ejemplo este señor iba con su bicicleta con cava vendiendo pescado, allí mismo lo limpiaba y se lo entregaba al cliente.

At sunset we returned to the boardwalk to walk it to the end and to look for options for dinner, we were told that there were several restaurants around there. By the way, the people of the town are very friendly and have an accent as if they were singing, in addition to speaking very fast, something particular to the inhabitants of eastern Venezuela.

Al atardecer volvimos al malecón para caminarlo hasta el final y para buscar opciones para cenar, nos dijeron que había varios restaurantes allí. Por cierto, la gente del pueblo es muy amable y tienen un acento como si cantaran, además de que hablan muy rápido, algo particular de los habitantes del oriente venezolano.

The gastronomy of Sucre state and especially that of the Paria peninsula is famous and exotic. Being close to the islands of Trinidad and Tobago (which have Hindu influence) and having been related to the French West Indies, many spices are used in foods such as curries. Coconut is also present in various dishes, especially fish and shellfish and in desserts, cocoa, which is produced in the area, is the protagonist.

La gastronomía del estado Sucre y sobre todo la de la península de Paria es famosa y exótica. Por estar cerca de las islas de Trinidad y Tobago (que tienen influencia hindú) y haberse relacionado con las Antillas francesas, se usan muchas especias en las comidas como el curry. El coco está presente también en varios platos, sobre todo pescados y mariscos y en los postres el cacao, el cual se produce en la zona, es el protagonista.

We had dinner in a place in front of the boardwalk and they had a dish that we wanted to try: fish curd, a kind of typical omelette from Sucre state that was really delicious and for dessert we ordered brownie.

Cenamos en un sitio frente al malecón y tenían un plato que queríamos probar: cuajado de pescado, una especie de tortilla típica del estado Sucre que la verdad estaba deliciosa y como postre pedimos brownie.

The trip through the spectacular Paria peninsula would take us the following days to lush beaches near Río Caribe, which I will talk about in my next posts.

El viaje por la espectacular península de Paria nos llevaría los siguientes días por exuberantes playas cercanas a Río Caribe, de las cuales les hablaré en mis siguientes publicaciones.
