My route through the Paria Peninsula, Venezuela - Part I / Mi ruta por la Península de Paria, Venezuela - I Parte

After visiting Playa Colorada, near the city of Cumaná, my journey through this region of the eastern Venezuelan coast continued to the east of Sucre state, to Paria Peninsula, a place full of greenery and exotic beaches.

Después de conocer Playa Colorada, cerca de la ciudad de Cumaná, mi viaje por esta región de la costa oriental venezolana continuó hacia el este del estado Sucre, a la Península de Paria, un lugar lleno de verdor y playas exóticas.

Before going to Carúpano, which is like the entrance to the Paria Peninsula, my mother and I stayed one day at a nearby beach called Patilla. There is a small town, houses and some inns, but since it was a weekday, the beach was practically empty.

Antes de ir a Carúpano, que es como la entrada de la Península de Paria, mi mamá y yo nos quedamos un día en una playa cercana que se llama Patilla. Allí hay una pequeña población, casas y una que otra posada pero como era día de semana, la playa estaba prácticamente vacía.

We found an inn for that night and then we went to the beach, which was in front, just a few steps away.

Encontramos una posada para esa noche y luego nos fuimos a la playa, que quedaba en frente, sólo a unos pasos.

The water was quite calm and not very cold, so I swam calmly although I felt several times that some fish were pinching my legs.

El agua estaba bastante serena y no muy fría, así que nadé tranquilamente aunque sentí varias veces que algunos peces me pellizcaban las piernas.

At night we walked down the main street looking for somewhere to eat but we couldn't get anything, until we asked a man outside his house if there was a restaurant there and he told us: "I can prepare fish for you" ... Bingo!

En la noche recorrimos la calle principal buscando algún sitio para comer pero no conseguíamos nada, hasta que le preguntamos a un señor que estaba afuera de su casa si había algún restaurant por ahí y él nos dijo: “yo les puedo preparar pescado”…¡Bingo!

We didn't know, he told us that on weekends this is one of the most visited beaches because they offer all services to people but the rest of the days you have to take what you are going to consume because everything is closed.

Nosotras no sabíamos, él nos dijo que los fines de semana esta es una de las playas más visitadas porque ofrecen todos los servicios a la gente pero el resto de los días hay que llevar lo que uno va a consumir porque todo está cerrado.

The man put a table with chairs on his patio and went inside with his wife to cook, after a while he brought us a great and delicious fish that we really enjoyed, definitely people make a difference in the places you visit, thanks to him we left to sleep with a happy heart hahaha.

El señor puso una mesa con sillas en su patio y se fue adentro con su esposa a cocinar, al rato nos trajo un gran y delicioso pescado que disfrutamos mucho, definitivamente la gente hace la diferencia en los lugares que visitas, gracias a él nos fuimos a dormir con el corazón contento jajaja.

The next day we got up early to take another bath at Patilla beach before leaving.

Al día siguiente nos levantamos temprano para darnos otro baño en Playa Patilla antes de irnos.

Then we got a taxi that took us to the exit of the town and there we waited for a bus to pass to get to Carúpano, which is a few minutes away.

Luego conseguimos un taxi que nos llevó hasta la salida del pueblo y allí esperamos a que pasara un autobús para llegar a Carúpano, que queda a unos pocos minutos.

Carúpano is the second largest city in Sucre state after Cumaná. According to what I read, it was founded in 1647 and during the time of Spanish colonization it was very important because shipments of cocoa and coffee left for Europe from its port.

Carúpano es la segunda ciudad más grande del estado Sucre después de Cumaná. Según leí fue fundada en 1647 y durante la época de la colonización española fue muy importante porque desde su puerto salían hacia Europa cargamentos de cacao y café.

In addition, the Liberator Simón Bolívar decreed the end of slavery in Venezuela in this city, on June 2, 1816.

Además, el Libertador Simón Bolívar decretó el fin de la esclavitud en Venezuela en esta ciudad, el 2 de junio de 1816.

I had never been there, so we told the bus driver to drop us off somewhere downtown, then we got off near the Municipal Market. When we got to Carúpano I really liked seeing the sea on one side and the city on the other. I love cities that have the sea nearby.

No había estado nunca ahí, así que le dijimos al conductor del autobús que nos dejara en algún sitio céntrico, entonces nos bajamos cerca del Mercado Municipal. Cuando llegamos a Carúpano me gustó mucho ver el mar por un lado y la ciudad por el otro. Me encantan las ciudades que tienen el mar cerca.

It was already noon so we went to the market to get to know it, see everything they sold, such as fresh fish, vegetables, fruits, etc., and of course also look for a place to eat, because you know, markets are the best places to eat and at good prices.

Ya era mediodía así que entramos al mercado para conocerlo, ver todo lo que vendían, como pescados frescos, vegetales, frutas, etc., y por supuesto también buscar un lugar para comer, porque ya saben, en los mercados es donde mejor se come y a buenos precios.

We ate fish accompanied by salad, fried slices of plantains, arepa and a huge orange juice, and additionally my mother ordered chorizo carupanero (a sausage), which is something typical to this city that she wanted to try, she liked it a lot.

Comimos pescado acompañado de ensalada, tajadas fritas de plátano, arepa y un enorme jugo de naranja, y adicionalmente mi mamá pidió un chorizo carupanero, que es algo típico de esta ciudad que ella quería probar, le gustó mucho.

From there we went looking for a place to spend that night and we found a very nice hotel located like on a hill, very close to the beach promenade of the port of Carúpano, it was a bit expensive but it included breakfast, so we opted to stay.

De allí salimos a buscar dónde pasar esa noche y encontramos un hotel muy bonito ubicado como en una colina, muy cerca del paseo de la playa del puerto de Carúpano, era un poco costoso pero incluía desayuno, así que optamos por quedarnos.

We left our things and immediately went to see the city a little walking towards the center, which wasn't very far. Without realizing it, we reached the historic center where the impressive Santa Rosa de Lima Cathedral is located, with a lot of vegetation around it.

Dejamos nuestras cosas e inmediatamente nos fuimos a conocer un poco la ciudad caminando hacia el centro, que no estaba muy lejos. Sin darnos cuenta llegamos al centro histórico donde se encuentra la impresionante Catedral Santa Rosa de Lima, con mucha vegetación alrededor.

We continue and we find the typical hustle and bustle of the commercial area, many shops: clothes, shoes, cosmetics, food, and also street vendors. I didn't take photos there, the truth is that I forgot. When we got to a square, Colón Square, I took the camera out again while we rested for a while on a bench.

Seguimos y nos encontramos con el típico ajetreo de la zona comercial, muchas tiendas: ropa, zapatos, cosméticos, comida, y también vendedores ambulantes. No tomé fotos allí, la verdad se me olvidó. Cuando llegamos a una plaza, la Plaza Colón, volví a sacar la cámara mientras descansábamos un rato en un banquito.

Although we didn't have the opportunity to get to know this city more because we only walked it one afternoon, I found it beautiful and with many interesting places. The next morning our next destination awaited us: Río Caribe, which I will tell you about in my next post.

Aunque no tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer más esta ciudad porque sólo la caminamos una tarde, me pareció bonita y con muchos lugares interesantes. A la mañana siguiente nos esperaba nuestro próximo destino: Río Caribe, del cual les hablaré en mi próxima publicación.
