After knowing Cumaná and Araya, as I related in my two previous posts, another incredible place in Sucre state awaited us: the beaches of the Mochima National Park.

Después de conocer Cumaná y Araya, como lo relaté en mis dos publicaciones anteriores, nos esperaba otro increíble lugar del estado Sucre: las playas del Parque Nacional Mochima.

Located in Sucre and Anzoátegui states, in eastern Venezuela, this National Park has an area of 94,935 hectares and is made up of both lush mountains and different types of beaches, islands and islets with great biological diversity. As I read it has more than 20 islands and about 121 beaches.

Ubicado en los estados Sucre y Anzoátegui, al oriente de Venezuela, este Parque Nacional tiene un área de 94.935 hectáreas y está conformado tanto por frondosas montañas como por diferentes tipos de playas, islas e islotes con gran diversidad biológica. Según leí tiene más de 20 islas y unas 121 playas.

Mochima means "land of many waters" in the language of the Cumanagotos, indigenous people who populated this area.

Mochima significa “tierra de muchas aguas” en la lengua de los Cumanagotos, indígenas que poblaban esta zona.

From Cumaná, my mother and I took a bus that took us to the town of Mochima, when you arrive you can see the sea and a lot of greenery from above and then there is a detour on the road where you descend.

Desde Cumaná mi mamá y yo tomamos un autobús que nos llevó hasta el pueblo de Mochima, cuando se va llegando se observa el mar y mucho verdor desde arriba y luego hay un desvío en la carretera por donde se desciende.

At noon we arrive at the town, it is small and has about two main streets and many little houses and lodgings. We asked in various places and we decided on an inn that was embedded in a rock, they gave us a room on the second floor from where we had a beautiful view. Our stay was 5 days.

Al mediodía llegamos al pueblo, es pequeño y tiene unas dos calles principales y muchas casitas y alojamientos. Preguntamos en varios sitios y nos decidimos por una posada que estaba como incrustada en una roca, nos dieron una habitación en el segundo piso desde donde teníamos una bella vista. Nuestra estadía fue de 5 días.

The town as such does not have a beach but a jetty, from there you take the boats to go to the different beaches that are part of the Mochima National Park. In this port is where the tourist activity is concentrated, the boatmen are organized and on a poster they have the list of beaches, the rates, schedules and number of people per boat. Depending on the number of people in the boat, the price that each one pays goes up or down, likewise, if you want to visit several places in one day, you can rent the boat and go from beach to beach. There are some that have services and others completely solitary.

El pueblo como tal no tiene playa sino un embarcadero, desde allí se toman las lanchas para ir a las diferentes playas que forman parte del Parque Nacional Mochima. En este puerto es donde se concentra la actividad turística, los lancheros están organizados y en un cartel tienen la lista de las playas, las tarifas, horarios y número de personas por lancha. Dependiendo de la cantidad de personas en la lancha, el precio que paga cada uno sube o baja, igualmente, si quieres visitar varios sitios en un día, puedes alquilar la lancha e ir de playa en playa. Hay algunas que cuentan con servicios y otras completamente solitarias.

The ideal is to leave for the beaches early in the morning to take advantage of the day because the boatmen generally return the people to the town of Mochima between 4:00 and 5:00 in the afternoon, before the tide rises much.

Lo ideal es salir para las playas temprano en la mañana para aprovechar el día porque los lancheros generalmente regresan a la gente al pueblo de Mochima entre las 4:00 y 5:00 de la tarde, antes de que suba mucho la marea.

As we arrived at the place at noon, we asked if there were still boats leaving for a beach and they recommended us to go to the closest one: Las Maritas. We did so and in about 15 minutes we were there, ready to immerse ourselves in its crystal clear waters.

Como nosotras llegamos al lugar al mediodía, preguntamos si aún salían lanchas para alguna playa y nos recomendaron ir a la más cercana: Las Maritas. Así lo hicimos y en unos 15 minutos estábamos allá, listas para sumergirnos en sus cristalinas aguas.

Las Maritas is a short beach, white sand and no waves, so it is very quiet for swimming. It also has all the services: rental of awnings and chairs, restaurant, bathrooms and street vendors that offer snacks and even bathing suits. With permission from Inparques (National Parks Institute) you can also camp here and on other beaches in the National Park.

Las Maritas es una playa de poca extensión, arena blanca y nada de oleaje, por lo que es bastante tranquila para nadar. Además tiene todos los servicios: alquiler de toldos y sillas, restaurante, baños y vendedores ambulantes que ofrecen chucherías y hasta trajes de baño. Con permiso de Inparques (Instituto Nacional de Parques) también se puede acampar aquí y en otras playas del Parque Nacional.

My mom and I didn't stay where everyone was, we went exploring to one end of the beach and there we got a nice space where we settled under a tree. We left our bags there and got into the water, then we ate some things that we had brought and we continued to enjoy the place.

Mi mamá y yo no nos quedamos donde estaba todo el mundo, nos fuimos a explorar hacia un extremo de la playa y allí conseguimos un bonito espacio donde nos acomodamos debajo de un árbol. Dejamos nuestros bolsos allí y nos metimos al agua, luego comimos algunas cosas que habíamos llevado y seguimos disfrutando del lugar.

Later, before leaving, we also climbed a hill behind the service area to observe the beach from another angle.

Después, antes de irnos, también subimos a una loma que está detrás del área de servicios para observar la playa desde otro ángulo.

At approximately a quarter to five in the afternoon, the boat arrived that took us back to town. Sunset was about to make its appearance...

Aproximadamente a un cuarto para las cinco de la tarde, llegó la lancha que nos llevó de regreso al pueblo. Ya el atardecer estaba por hacer su aparición…

We went to the inn to take a bath and then went for a walk around town to see what options there were for dinner. We found a restaurant almost at the end of a street that offered a variety of fish dishes and we ate there.

Fuimos a la posada a darnos un baño y luego salimos a caminar por el pueblo para ver qué opciones había para cenar. Conseguimos un restaurante casi al final de una calle que ofrecía platos variados de pescado y allí comimos.

As I said, the town is small, in addition to a couple of restaurants there were other more informal places with fast food such as hamburgers, hot dogs or empanadas. For the next day we already knew where to go to have delicious empanadas for breakfast, we also discovered a bakery near the entrance of the town, there we bought some things to take to the beach that we were going to visit.

Como dije, el pueblo es pequeño, además de un par de restaurantes había otros sitios más informales con comida rápida como hamburguesas, perros calientes o empanadas. Para el día siguiente ya sabíamos a dónde ir para desayunar unas deliciosas empanadas, también descubrimos una panadería cerca de la entrada del pueblo, allí compramos algunas cosas para llevar a la playa que íbamos a visitar.

Before 9:00 am we were already in the port to go to see Playa Blanca (White Beach), one of the most beautiful, they had told us. In a matter of about 20 minutes we were arriving and checking the beauty of the place.

Antes de las 9:00 am ya estábamos en el puerto para ir a conocer Playa Blanca, una de las más hermosas, nos habían dicho. En cuestión de unos 20 minutos estábamos llegando y comprobando la belleza del lugar.

Obviously it is named for its very white sand, which contrasts with the intense blue of the water. This beach also has services for visitors and its waters are warm and calm.

Obviamente se llama así por su arena blanquísima, que contrasta con el intenso azul del agua. Esta playa también cuenta con servicios para los visitantes y sus aguas son cálidas y tranquilas.

All the beaches that belong to the Mochima National Park have excellent visibility to see the flora and fauna of the place, therefore you can see colorful fish between your legs while you are in the water. Of course, if you have a diving mask or goggles, much better, you will be able to see them more clearly.

Todas las playas que pertenecen al Parque Nacional Mochima tienen una excelente visibilidad para ver la flora y fauna del lugar, por lo tanto puedes ver pecesitos de colores entre tus piernas mientras estás en el agua. Claro, si tienes una máscara o lentes de buceo mucho mejor, podrás verlos con mayor nitidez.

My mom and I rented an awning and chairs to be comfortable and we enjoyed this beach until about four in the afternoon, the truth is that we didn't want to leave the place...

Mi mamá y yo alquilamos toldo y sillas para estar cómodas y disfrutamos de esta playa hasta aproximadamente las cuatro de la tarde, la verdad no provocaba irse de allí…

In the evening we went back to walk around the town and reached a nice little square, then we ate at the restaurant the day before, they had good food at reasonable prices.

Ya en la noche volvimos a salir a caminar por el pueblo y llegamos hasta una agradable placita, luego comimos en el restaurante del día anterior, tenían buena comida a precios razonables.

Our destination for the next day was Playa Manare, which is a little further than the other two, about 30 minutes by boat from the town of Mochima. The landscape up there is somewhat different because there are some impressive rocky cliffs, some with caves included.

Nuestro destino para el día siguiente fue Playa Manare, la cual queda un poco más lejos que las otras dos, a unos 30 minutos en lancha del pueblo de Mochima. El paisaje hasta allá es algo diferente porque hay unos acantilados rocosos impresionantes, algunos con cuevas incluidas.

The boatman told us that dolphins are sometimes seen on the way, unfortunately that day we were unlucky. For those who want to see them with guarantee, they make a special tour to an area of the sea where they are always circulating. We couldn't do it, it was expensive for our budget.

El lanchero nos dijo que en el trayecto a veces se ven delfines, lamentablemente ese día no tuvimos suerte. Para los que quieran verlos con seguridad, ellos hacen un paseo especial hacia una zona del mar donde siempre están circulando. Nosotras no pudimos hacerlo, era algo costoso para el presupuesto que teníamos.

Well, we got to Playa Manare and I was impressed by both the color of the water and the stone wall that surrounds it. Unlike the other beaches we had visited in Mochima, this one has golden sand and the color of the water is like blue-green, an exotic landscape.

Bueno, llegamos a Playa Manare y me impresionó tanto el color del agua como la pared de piedra que la rodea. A diferencia de las otras playas que habíamos visitado en Mochima, esta tiene arena dorada y el color del agua es como azul-verdoso, un exótico paisaje.

Its waters are calm but the fish are mischievous, several times I felt that they nibbled on my feet, they tickled me hahaha.

Sus aguas son tranquilas pero los peces traviesos, varias veces sentí que me mordisqueaban los pies, me hacían cosquillas jajaja.

When we returned to town we went to the inn to rest for a while and at night we went out there and found a place where they make and repair boats, we also visited a beautiful handicraft shop where we bought some things to have memories of the place.

Al volver al pueblo fuimos a la posada a descansar un rato y en la noche salimos por ahí y conseguimos un sitio donde fabrican y reparan lanchas, también conocimos una bella tienda de artesanías donde compramos algunas cosas para tener recuerdos del lugar.

The next day we visited the beach that I liked the most of the ones we visited: Cautarito, which is just over half an hour by boat from the town of Mochima. We went to the port and saw the list of beaches, that name caught my attention and I asked if there was a boat there that day. No people had come to make a group but a man told us that he could take my mother and me for a reasonable price. We accepted and left, upon arrival he asked for his full payment (round trip) and told us that he would pick us up around 4:00 pm.

Al día siguiente conocimos la playa que más me gustó de las que visitamos: Cautarito, la cual queda a poco más de media hora en lancha desde el pueblo de Mochima. Fuimos al puerto y vimos la lista de las playas, me llamó la atención ese nombre y pregunté si había lancha ese día para allá. No había llegado gente como para hacer un grupo pero un señor nos dijo que él podía llevarnos a mi mamá y a mí por un precio razonable. Aceptamos y nos fuimos, al llegar él pidió su pago completo (ida y vuelta) y nos dijo que nos buscaría alrededor de las 4:00 pm.

Cautarito Beach is beautiful, but my mother wasn't very happy because there was no one there, also this is one of the beaches in Mochima that doesn't have services. I loved having the beach just for us but my mom didn't, so at first she was a bit upset hahaha. However, about an hour later a boat arrived with a large group of Brazilians, so my mother relaxed, she was no longer worried about having come to a lonely beach.

Playa Cautarito es bellísima, pero mi mamá no estaba muy contenta porque no había nadie allí, además esta es una de las playas de Mochima que no cuenta con servicios. A mí me encantó tener la playa sólo para nosotras pero a mi mamá no, así que al principio estaba un poco amargada jajaja. Sin embargo como una hora después llegó una lancha con un numeroso grupo de brasileros, así que mi mamá se relajó, ya no estaba inquieta por haber venido a una playa solitaria.

What can I tell you? I really enjoyed this paradisiacal beach with crystal clear waters, beautiful fish, trees to rest in the shade and a mountain around that made the landscape even more attractive. Take a look:

¿Qué les puedo decir? Disfruté demasiado de esta playa paradisíaca con aguas clarísimas, bellos peces, árboles para descansar bajo la sombra y una montaña alrededor que hacía el paisaje aún más atractivo. Echen un vistazo:

The hours passed, it was already after 4:00 pm and the boatman who had to come to look for us didn't appear. My mother was very worried and she also blamed me because I paid the man for the entire trip. The truth is that she was right, I should have paid him just the one way and the rest when he came to get us. There was no signal to make calls, I already imagined myself sleeping there in the open...

Pasaron las horas, ya eran más de las 4:00 pm y el lanchero que nos tenía que venir a buscar no aparecía. Mi mamá estaba muy preocupada y además me echó la culpa porque yo le pagué al señor el viaje completo. La verdad es que tenía razón, debí pagarle sólo la ida y el resto cuando viniera a buscarnos. No había señal para hacer llamadas, yo ya me imaginaba durmiendo allí a la intemperie…

Fortunately, the boat that had brought the Brazilians arrived and we told the boy to please also take us because the man had left us abandoned. The boy told us that of course, there was no problem and we didn't even have to pay for the trip, he was supportive and understood that we had been scammed, apparently he knew that man. Upon arriving at the port we report it at the ticket office, we do not know what happened to him but at least we left our claim there.

Afortunadamente llegó la lancha que había traído a los brasileros y le dijimos al muchacho que por favor nos llevara también porque nos habían dejado abandonadas. El chico nos dijo que claro, que no había problema y ni siquiera tuvimos que pagarle el viaje, él fue solidario y entendió que habíamos sido estafadas, aparentemente conocía a ese señor. Al llegar al puerto lo reportamos en la taquilla, no sabemos qué pasó con él pero al menos dejamos nuestro reclamo allí.

On our last day in Mochima we visited Playa Blanca again because my mother had liked it a lot and it was one of those that was close by. The day dawned sunny but then in the afternoon it became cloudy and a heavy rain fell, many people didn't care about this and they continued to bathe, as long as there is no storm it is not dangerous to be in the water, I also stayed a while, but if you start to see lightning it is better to get out or you could be unlucky enough to get electrocuted if one falls nearby.

En nuestro último día en Mochima volvimos a visitar Playa Blanca porque a mi mamá le había gustado mucho y era de las que quedaba cerca. El día amaneció soleado pero luego en la tarde se nubló y cayó una fuerte lluvia, a mucha gente esto no le importó y siguieron bañándose, mientras no haya tormenta no es peligroso estar dentro del agua, yo también me quedé un rato, pero si empiezas a ver rayos es mejor salir o podrías tener la mala suerte de electrocutarte si cae uno cerca…

On our return to town the sky had cleared and we could see an incredible sunset, in this way we said goodbye to Mochima, a true beach paradise.

A nuestro regreso al pueblo ya el cielo se había despejado y pudimos ver un increíble atardecer, así nos despedimos de Mochima, un verdadero paraíso playero.
