It looks like a castle but is a barracks | Monomad [ENG-ESP]

Walking through a historic center always sharpens my senses, especially my eyes, many things can go unnoticed if we are not attentive to our surroundings. It can be a house, a door, the bars of a window... old buildings have many interesting details. However, sometimes there is no way not to look carefully because we come across imposing constructions like the one I am going to show you here.

Pasear por un casco histórico siempre me agudiza los sentidos, sobre todo la mirada, muchas cosas pueden pasar desapercibidas si no estamos atentos a nuestro alrededor. Puede ser una casa, una puerta, las rejas de una ventana... las edificaciones viejas poseen muchos detalles interesantes. Ahora bien, en ocasiones no hay forma de no mirar con atención porque nos topamos con construcciones imponentes como la que vengo a mostrar aquí.

There are many private houses and striking public buildings in the historic center of La Victoria, Aragua state (Venezuela), and if you are willing to walk the whole area you will find a building that anyone would say is a castle. It is located a few blocks from the Ribas Square, the most famous in this city.

Hay muchas casas particulares y edificaciones públicas llamativas en el casco histórico de La Victoria, estado Aragua (Venezuela), y si te dispones a caminarlo completo te encontrarás con una edificación que cualquiera diría que es un castillo. Queda a unas cuadras de la Plaza Ribas, la más conocida de esta ciudad.

But it's not a castle, it is the "General Mariano Montilla" Barracks. Before reaching it, in front of it, there is a square with leafy trees that give it a lot of serenity, the Montilla Square.

Pero no es un castillo, es el Cuartel "General Mariano Montilla". Antes de llegar a él, en todo su frente, hay una plaza con frondosos árboles que le aportan mucha serenidad, la Plaza Montilla.

The design is the work of architect Luis Mantelini and although its construction began in 1906, for various political and social reasons, it was completed many years later, its formal inauguration was in 1937. Undoubtedly the most visually striking feature of this work is its stone-covered facade.

El diseño es obra del arquitecto Luis Mantelini y aunque su construcción comenzó en 1906, por diversos motivos políticos y sociales, se terminó muchos años después, siendo su inauguración formal en 1937. Sin duda lo que más impacta visualmente de esta obra es su fachada cubierta de piedras.

Its name pays tribute to the Major General of the Venezuelan Army, Mariano Montilla, who took part in the battle of La Victoria (February 12, 1814) during the struggles for the independence of Venezuela.

Su nombre rinde homenaje al General de División del Ejército de Venezuela, Mariano Montilla, quien tomó parte en la batalla de La Victoria (12 de febrero de 1814) durante las luchas por la independencia de Venezuela.

Over the years, these facilities have housed different battalions of the Venezuelan Army; it has been the headquarters of the Army Military Band School, the Reserve Officers Training Battalion and today the "General José Félix Ribas" Army Professional Troops Training School operates here.

Estas instalaciones han albergado a lo largo de los años a diferentes batallones del Ejército venezolano; ha sido sede de la Escuela de Bandas Militares del Ejército, del Batallón de Formación de Oficiales de Reserva y hoy en día funciona aquí la Escuela de Formación de Tropas Profesionales del Ejercito "General José Félix Ribas".

It's not very comfortable to take pictures in the surroundings because it is a military zone and they watch you and ask you what you are doing there. That day I couldn't enter to see the inside of the barracks but I talked to one of the guards and he told me that they do guided tours, so I will come back. I was only able to take this photo of the inside:

No es muy cómodo hacer fotos en sus alrededores porque por ser zona militar te observan y se te acercan a preguntarte qué haces allí. Ese día no pude ingresar para ver por dentro el cuartel pero hablé con uno de los guardias y me dijo que hacen visitas guiadas, así que volveré. Sólo pude tomar esta foto del interior:

The Montilla Barracks is an emblem of the city of La Victoria and in 1978 was declared a National Historic Monument.

El Cuartel Montilla es un emblema de la ciudad de La Victoria y en 1978 fue declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional.

Apart from military activities, art exhibitions and other cultural events are also held at its facilities from time to time.

Aparte de las actividades de índole militar, en sus instalaciones también se hacen de vez en cuando exposiciones de arte y otros eventos culturales.
