When I went to this place located in Mérida state, in the Venezuelan Andes, I didn't know what the title of this post says.

The tour I had taken in the city of Mérida to visit the most emblematic places of the nearby moors in one day brought me to El Águila Peak and the information was given to us by both the guide and a huge sign that was there: YOU ARE IN FRONT OF THE HIGHEST ROAD POINT IN VENEZUELA, 4,118 masl

As this trip to Mérida was for work, I hadn't had much time to find out what I could see here at some free time, so many of the places I visited on the tour were totally a surprise to me. We had already gone to various places such as the Chapel of Juan Félix Sánchez, the Monuments to the Dog Nevado and The Crazy Luz Caraballo, the Mucubají lagoon ... and it was almost three in the afternoon, so the visit to El Águila Peak was one of the last before returning to the city.

This point, also called Collado del Cóndor, is on the trans-Andean highway between the towns of Timotes and Apartaderos, 79 km from the city of Mérida.

As soon as I got out of the tour car, I felt the frozen air in my face, there was also mist, I couldn't fully see the mountains that surrounded us.

It was my first time in Mérida, I knew that in this region of Venezuela it was cold, but I had no idea that it was so cold hahaha… At El Águila Peak the average temperatures range from º6 to º9 degrees. Of course my clothes were insufficient, I had on a short-sleeved cotton blouse and on top of it a knitted wool sweater that was the one that warmed me a bit, I had neither a hat nor gloves.

El Águila Peak is a tourist parador that has restaurants, sale of handicrafts and horseback riding. Its main attraction is the monument built in honor of the Liberator Simón Bolívar and his Admirable Campaign, with which in 1813 he crossed the Andes of Táchira, Mérida and Trujillo states to liberate Venezuela from the Spanish.

This monument, inaugurated on December 19, 1927, is a statue of an Andean condor made by the Colombian sculptor Marcos León Mariño. The bird holds with its beak and leg a shield with the image of the Liberator.

Something curious is that since the place is called El Águila (Eagle) Peak, before detailing the figure of the condor statue in the monument, many people are confused thinking that it is an eagle, however the name of this place has to do with the Eagle Royal Andean (Geranoaetus melanoleucus), which is more common in the Venezuelan Andes than the condor.

Near the tourist parador, going up a little there is also a small chapel, from there you can continue to see the beauty of the Merida moors. We were told that from July to September snow usually falls here, it must be a sight!
