Magic the Gathering: Are Wizards of the Coast pulling a Fast One with Dominaria United?

Will you leave the fucking reserved list alone, it’s to be preserved, is eternal and we don’t want any more cards in circulation.

Many, many will vehemently disagree with my statement.

How many Magic the Gathering card-playing geeks are under 30? Chances are they never saw Legends being released or had a sniff at it.

I did, I was there, I bought a sealed box and cracked all the packs; I had a full set once. It was June 1994 and I have fond memories of that time.

I also sold the lot years ago, sometime around 1996 to be precise. It's a regret but that's life for you. In the same sentence, I regret selling many Splinterlands cards.

Several years ago there was an interest in the Reserved List. Cards that were peanuts gained double their value, and now are more like 5-10x times.

IMG_4970.JPG
...'they are not the best, but all are on the Reserved List, and about to become more common'...

I bought a few Legends rares on the Reserved List just before the mania, and I have held them since. Wizards of the Coast are now telling us some long-forgotten cases in 'a warehouse deep in the middle of nowhere, in Washington state' have been found.

They are cracking the boxes, and packs and inserting them into collecter boxes of Dominaria United randomly.

image.png
Source

Well, how convenient. They dare not reprint any of these cards and so some shit-arse story has been made up, maybe.

Dominaria United is the next expansion and it’s going to sell well. You can be sure of that.

The credibility of Hasbro (Wizards of the Coast) has taken a downturn for me (again).

image.png
Source

Do you think this is the end? 'A mysterious shipment of Arabian Nights has been found in Mississippi' could be the next wacko tale we hear about.

They dare not reprint these cards en-masse or the lawsuits will fly. Some people invest shitloads into this cardboard and the most expensive cards go for tens of thousands of dollars.

IMG_4973.JPG

…'I have some Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends, and Betas of out-of-print cards. I did intend to keep them for a rainy day'…

While the vast majority of Magic players would embrace a reprint of the reserved list, they are not thinking about the damage it would do to Hasbro.

This is one of the reasons I have invested heavily in Splinterlands. I know for a fact that @aggroed and @yabapmatt are ex-Magic players and their behavior over the last few years has always been to protect the old players.

I doubt we will see 'Chronicles' reprints of old Splinterlands cards. The scarcity of the older Betas is clear to see. There are few on the market for sale.

image.png
...'if the Prince was ever reprinted, you could expect the credibility of Splinterlands to take a large nosedive'...

How about in 2 years? How many Prince Rennyn’s do you expect to be available?

I will be watching Hasbro like a hawk going forward. Any more 'lost boxes' are going to ring some serious warning bells in my head.

Could it be I need to sell my Unlimited Time Vault and my pristine Beta Contract from Below before it's too late?

Both cards are on the Reserved List and valuable for different reasons.

IMG_4975.JPG
...'is this the start of a trend, should I dump the whole box on eBay?'...

Are Hasbro telling the truth, is this a one-off event or are they trying to gouge more money out of the already beleaguered Magic: The Gathering players by doing some sneaky reprinting?

It smells bad to me, but I am a suspicious bastard.

I have never played Magic the gatering even though I am of a certain age and some of my friends used to play it years ago. My first trading card game was Splinterlands.
Magic the gatering was the first game in the world of its kind and we can call it the BTC of collectible card games and I agree with you that reprints would be bad for everyone

They screwed over the community on releasing Chronicles in 1995. Many left and sold their entire collections including people I knew. Now, they reprint to oblivion, and I wont buy their cards.

should I dump the whole box on eBay?

I'd probably look for a proper buyer if it came to that, rather than doing a mass dump...

For now I keep keep an eye on what they are doing. If it happens again, the big boys will know and all hell will be let loose.

Alienating their best chance at getting things going again is stupid. The early adopters are the ones who will buy. Not to mention introduce their kids to it.

I never got into Magic myself. I was given a package of cards for my birthday in Grade 1, probably about 30 years ago now. I never played them but I hung onto them for a really long time, well into my 20's. Then I moved and sold a bunch of stuff to a used book store (my Gameboy color and all my games, the magic cards and a bunch of other really cool shit that I wish I kept) - idiot! Years later I learned that magic cards were selling for ridiculous amounts of money and since then I've been thinking that I probably sold my card deck for $5 and it probably had a super old card in it worth hundreds or more. I'm a fucking idiot haha. 🙃

I have been there, I had everything including a sealed Alpha deck. Very few exist in the world now, I got over it long ago.

Yeah you can't dwell on these things I suppose. I'm lucky in that I don't actually know for certain if any of the cards were actually worth anything. They could have been worth nothing more than a few bucks really.

I have always wanted to play Magic: The Gathering.

Oh, my... They are pulling another stunt. People at Wizards get too crazy from time to time. They just want to cash on the value os nostalgia over Dominaria.

I'm going to have any of those reserved list cards but I know it pretty well. A mine of gold to sit on. Hopefully not all of it will get devalued once with these shenanigans.

Dominaria is not that old, maybe 5 years, I bought a box and cracked it (regret). The only items worth buying now for investment purposes are sealed product, they fucked over the secondary market years ago with never-ending reprints.

For players, it's a different angle. I stopped playing a long time ago.

Yeah, take Rudy's advice. I meant the old Dominaria. As it was basically the only plane where stuff was actually done and has so many sets, anything that says Dominaria has a nostalgia factor for old players.

Rudy seems low key on this WOTC move, I watched his video yesterday. For me, its setting some kind of new precedent. They can only pull the wool over our eyes for so long.

Rudy has some years advising about sitting on sealed product. Of course, he's nuts. And I guess some of this doings have to do with prices spiking. At least on sealed product realm. It would be amazing to have the chance to invest in something like that.

They are only in Collectors boxes (the most expensive). Hoarding a few would be wise.

Yes, the value of those is insane. Also masters set like Modern Masters and so. Those go up quite nicely after the hype of opening boxes fades away.

You have your box of cards labeled? What a nerd! :) I'm just kidding. That does seem like it would be a really bad idea for them to do any reprinting. It's like when shows kill off a character then bring them back. Just commit to something!

When I was 10 years old, my father bought me a pack of those cards. In his time, they were great. Also, the graphics, all made by artists, added more pleasure to the cards.

Following for the superb M:TG content. Been playing/collecting Magic since 1995, and this stunt has me worried as well. Hasbro is straight money-grabbing, just look at how they dropped MSRP and now charge whatever the hell they want for packs.

I have been parting out and selling my unused cards...

Thanks, though I rarely write about MtG these days. I only sell cards now, and have shitloads left from when I used to actively buy and sell.

Heard that. Shoving old-school Legends, even if they are only from one collation, is an attempt to get the ancients like you and I to open up the retail wallet again.

As a reasonable OG player (94) and LGS owner since 97, I would add that sometimes the extra distribution helps the price. Actually after Chronicles/Renaissance the value of AN/AQ/LE skyrocketed. And we all remember what the ugly berserk reprint did to the Beta and UNL Berserk.
So, kinda agree with the overall post, (a lost warehouse, hahahaha! Since the sold out of AN, WOTC keeps several cases of each produced sets) but just wanted to add my 2c.
Also: The pack opening photo is cool ;P

I think these will sell very well for you as a LGS owner. As an investor and owner of many older cards, it kind of stinks.

The old Beserk artwork was great, the new.. yeah... kind of crappy.

I thankfully don’t got worry about them making the Magic The Gathering cards I have worthless. They always have been and appear always will be.

I’ve been tempted a few times over the years to want to go out and buy a box of the newer stuff and crack some packs open. Then it’s stuff like this that reminds me that they can’t stop wanting to do stupid stuff what are the chances any of the newer stuff will hold have value in 10 years from now? I’m not holding my breath on that.

I do have a feeling many “forgotten” about boxes over the years will keep getting found. I do wonder though with modern technology how hard would it to be to make fakes as good as the originals? Sadly the knockoffs are going get so good at some point if they are not already that none of it can be trusted anymore when it comes to old school physical cards.

Now that would be a true integrity test. A few weeks ago we stumbled upon a barn which had some old gaming gear inside, Sega Megadrive stuff.., I tell you the demons where tempting me.

Yeah, the urge is real and if it was something that not only you like but you know is super valuable in that niche almost not robbing because no one is really aware of it kind of way then that would be tempting

I was quite bad with the klepto when I was young too. You name it, if it involved nicking something from a faceless corporate place I did it! Would like to think those times are past...

I don't think they reprint it. Would be retarded to use the same box and even if they do the work and use the same material,

reputation risk would be 100x higher. They are printing money with those collector items :D

IMO it's legit, from some returns decades ago or something with a dispute. I remember some years ago ( 2 or so) a bigger company had found 3 pallets of new Nintendo snes.

Damn, that was nice, I got one for around 150$ :)

I think the set will incredible age well ( and legends cards will be super rare) + should boost old card prices.

IMO a cool event :D
