Wednesday Walk - Just Squirrels
This last walk was full of squirrels for this #wednesdaywalk

It started getting warm again and we took a walk. This brought out all the squirrels who probably thought it was spring finally. (later it got below freezing again)

Each one was out crunching through the last of the walnut stores. It is super easy to locate them because you hear a squeeky crunching sound and once you locate them they are balled up like this just chewing.

They use their tails as a sort of shield against wind and as a fur coat to block the chill breezes.

Later in the park I saw this one in the middle of the street. Thankfully cars have to drive slowly here so they are rarely ever hit.

Hawks and owls are their main enemy. They are one of my guides to locating raptors.

If you hear them doing a sqwaaaa croaking sort of sound that means there is usually a large bird somewhere hanging around. They've helped me find a couple owls and many hawks as well as some false alarms such as crows.

This nursing one was right behind my house. It looks like it has a pecan maybe from one of my neighbors. I'll have to keep an eye out for baby squirrels when it finally does get warm.

Here's one from last fall burying a walnut. I'm sure by now most of these buried walnuts are gone by now and they are hoping to feast on spring buds.
That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
Thanks again @scrooger :-)
Nice squirrel shots 👍 Happy #wednesdaywalk The squirrels are still cold in Vermont. But they do come out anytime its a little warmer or the sun comes out a little bit. They do have the advantage of plenty of buried nuts left lol snow covered, frozen ground keeps the nuts safe
They probably can't count on your bird feeder anymore right? Bear protected and squirrel twirled?
My feeder are in the garage 😊 gave up on dealing with bears.
Hello little old man! (not to you, the squirrel) I just love those little rascals. I have a squirrel that comes every day and eats. Sometimes he has his friend with him. He who comes every day stays for several hours and I sit and watch him through the kitchen window.
Thanks again for the gift!
Their winter coats do make them look like little old men. I'm hoping to be out when all the babies emerge in spring, most of them are quite tame and you can sometimes even pet them.
They are not afraid of people who wish them well!
I tried bringing them pecans at the park and one ran over and grabbed it out of my hand while scratching at the same time. They have razor sharp claws and drew some blood.
I have a wonderful story, there were a lot of people waiting for the bus, a squirrel ran out into the traffic, I ran out and tried to stop the traffic, I just ended up under the car without getting hit. I picked him up and everyone applauded and cars stopped..., unwelcome as he was, and I kissed him, fantastic
