Three Tune Tuesday - Mongolian Metal?

avatar

Here is a bit of Mongolian metal for this #threetunetuesday by @ablaze

The first band is obviously The Hu. They have a sort of hard rock sound to them with their traditional horse head fiddles, overtone singing and jaw harps. I got to see them live here in Chicago and they sounded great. They are a nice break from various metal bands that just do the screamer singer thing.

The second band is Nine Treasures. They are bit more metal than The Hu but still use quite a few traditional instruments in their songs. This one even throws in a Russian balalaika for some leads.

The last band is Uuhai. They are quite a bit like the hu but do a bit more singing. It seems the Gobi Desert is full of metal bands filming their music videos with a drone lol. Its not Mongolian metal unless you are perched on a sand hill with a Morin Khuur and a drone doing 360 flythroughs around your head.

I usually listen to their full albums on a randomized playlist during work. Pretty good for concentration type of work.

For sure! And actually, I am only familiar with the Hu - the other two are new to me but I’m definitely gonna check them out. Actually, just yesterday I started jamming along with El Ten Eleven radio on Pandora, I had a long drive and got three songs done so I’m hoping to put them up as I finalize them over the next few days - anyway, point is I trust your musical recommendations more and more as we navigate these tuesdays!

I remember seeing a good Mongolian band with a strange flute in it, I'll have to try and remember the name of them somehow lol.

I dig Mongolian throat singing. These are great picks that I'm adding to my playlist. I had come across a few of them previously but lost them with my previous phone.

It's a very unique sound and completely different to the fry vocals that many metal bands use (which I found out today are actually far more difficult than people think!)

The description of the song by Nine Treasures reminded me of a version of Thunderstruck that came into my feed by accident a few days ago...

I just looked them up, they're cool. I love "different to the norm" sounding music like this. Thanks for the suggestion 😁

That's pretty cool and very interesting.

Love the instruments!

Not sure it works for Thunderstruck but hey... adventure is out there and originality wins the day! :)

I love seeing it when covers are made with their own flair. Have you heard of Steve 'n' Seagulls? They do a really different version of Thunderstruck. You might like that version better.

Yeah. Agreed!

I found a playlist of covers that's pretty interesting on Spotify

It's awesome to hear artist's interpretations of originals.

Some, I'm like "Yeah. That's pretty cool." Others I become pretty outraged 😆 "How could they do that to that song?!"

I've never heard of them. But just dug them up and have seen this. It's great! :D

Thanks for pointing me to this again.

I've heard the hu before and thought they were really spot on. Really neat that you were able to see them live. I'm not sure that I had before a mental idea of what "Mongolian Metal" sounded like, but whatever it was, these three fit it pretty damn well.

I saw them at Riot Fest I wish I had driven up to Milwaukee to see them by themselves to play a longer set. Perhaps another year...

Um... Mongolian Metal? :D

I didn't think I even liked Metal until this very moment.

See @inthenow - I've been turned at last!

Mongolian Metal, eh!!!! Who knew, certainly not me and this quote from you really peaked my interest "They are a nice break from various metal bands that just do the screamer singer thing." as the screamer singer things often ruins great metal songs for me.. It's great to see a deviation from that recipe here.. I really liked that first one from the Hu and not a screamer lead singer in sight! Nine Treasure were spot on too with a cool video and instruments... These Metal songs (the non screamer ones) are definitely growing on me now.

Its more singer/overtone singer with these guys, I have no idea how they do that. There's a guy we know in the suburbs from Mongolia who gives overtone singing lessons. I'm not sure if it is one of those things that takes natural talent or if anyone can be trained to sing that way with enough practice.
