Things I Picked Up Over the Years

(Edited)

Here's a few random things I've picked up over the years.

PSX_20230831_070415.jpg
This was a cold gold crowned kinglet I found in downtown Chicago. Eventually it warmed up in my hand and was able to fly away.

I wish these things were edible. I find quite a few of these hedge apple trees around here and they have such interesting fruit. There's a way you can dry these so they become decorative and you can paint them interesting colors to leave around the house.

Every spring the wild chives grow in abundance here and I usually go foraging for them. I like to put them in sour dough crepes.

PSX_20230831_065706.jpg
One of the few black trumpets I've ever found. I found this one way up in Michigan and I wish I could find a stash of them growing lower here in Chicago. They dry really well for storage and have an amazing taste.

PSX_20230831_070034.jpg
Here is a little Christmas Cholla cactus pear. They are sweet and super tart at the same time. You can take a lighter to them to burn off the tiny little hairy thorns before eating them.

PSX_20230831_072627.jpg
The brown snakes seem to show up around fall around here. I usually end up catching one per year, mostly because I'm able to hear them crinkling around in the dry leaves.

PSX_20230831_070240.jpg
A tiny little millipede. These guys used to invade my ground floor apartment and I would be cleaning up their dried up carcasses every week.

PSX_20230831_070136.jpg
Here is a baby night snake in Arizona. These guys are great for keeping down the rodent population, the only problem is they tend to act like rattle snakes and at this age you could possibly be picking up a tiny rattlesnake that hasn't grown in its rattles yet. I could ID it because of its back pattern.

PSX_20230831_070343.jpg
A poor cold honeybee after a rain storm.

PSX_20230831_065357.jpg
I found these acorn caps while looking for morel mushrooms. The pattern sort of reminded me of a morel but it turned out to be a disappointing acorn cap instead.

PSX_20230831_065740.jpg
Speaking of acorns, look at these tiny little mushrooms surrounding the cap edge. These little guys are Hymenoscyphus fructigenus one of the smallest mushrooms I've ever found.

PSX_20230831_065328.jpg
Here's a bit of dryad's saddle I picked off a large specimen. Usually you can only eat the outer edge of these as the inner edge is too spongy. If it breaks off like this it is still fresh enough to eat. If it just bends like a sponge then good luck trying to eat it.

PSX_20230831_073629.jpg
And now for a huge centipede that I would never try and catch in my hand lol. Each leg has poison and it would leave a horrible centipede shaped rash on your hand if you picked it up.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

I was lucky to find the little bird after a cold winter storm, they can get chilled fast in the wrong weather.

What a great selection of things you have found. Shame, that poor little bird looked dead cold, I'm so glad you could warm it up so it could be on its way. I used to do this in winter with field mice. I'd find them and some other varieties lying on the grass and put them in my pockets. Most of them were just in torpor and were very much alive.

I like the little snakes you find, nice pictures of them too. I quite like snakes. My favourite photo has to be the acorn with the little mushrooms growing out of it. I've never seen that before, it's wonderful.

Quite surprised there isn't a picture of a squirrel or chipmunk in your hand though. 🐿

I found the little kinglet right outside of Chipotle on my lunch break, it was sitting next to the door and probably would have gotten stepped on. It was easy to grab and then I walked it over to the nearest park and by then it had warmed up and I let it go. I need to start a project of taming a chipmunk around here so I can get a shot of one taking food out of my hand. Squirrels are a bit too bitey to try that with lol.

I love those big apples! So interesting 🧐 Would be great if you could eat them. The centipede I wouldn’t pick either 😉

The hedge apples look really cool when dried and spray painted with metallic colors.

I bet! One day you should make a diy post about these 🤩

That will be a fun art project, plus there are loads of them since no one eats them.

Great! I would have been scared about the snake, but the other woould be possible for me too.

The little snakes are quite harmless but they do always end up musking you once they are caught.

Wow, interesting pictures you share with us, it's amazing how much nature you share with us, many of the images left me seeing for example the snakes in your hand and the bee practically posing for the picture.

The acorn with the little mushrooms really caught my attention, it's something peculiar.

You have a talent for attracting nature in you, as you share with us so much natural beauty in your hand.

Very interesting the centipede, yesterday I actually observed a green processionary caterpillar near my home, I researched that its hairs can generate allergic reactions, such as irritation, inflammation and fever. Good thing I didn't touch it.

Thank you very much for sharing these pictures with us, best regards.

Ahh yes I know about those fuzzy caterpillars with burning hairs. Over here they are gray instead of green.

That’s an interesting collection, particularly those fantastic little acorn fungi. I’ve never seen anything like that before. Mother nature really was in a bad mood when she made centipedes like those.

Those centipedes are pretty aggressive, i once had one crawl into my shoe.

Nightmare! I live in Thailand and never fail to check my shoes. So far only toads.

Love these close up looks at so many amazing natural finds! Great post!

A question for you. Can I eat these?

Those are summer oysters aka Pleurotus ostreatus. You can tell because they are growing out of wood and have gills that run down the sides of the stems. They are a really good edible, though you may need to cut quite a bit of the stem off because its can get pretty tough in texture.

The best ones grow out of willow trees, they seem to assume a slightly sweet taste from them.

Not many nearby willows, but I will tell my daughter to be on the lookout! She found these, but her family won't eat mushrooms so I benefited!

These ones taste a bit more mild than typically mushrooms so I bet they would like them if they were brave enough.

Hymenoscyphus is a really cool find! I'm glad our centipedes aren't like that. They can give a nasty venomous bite but it pales in comparison

In the mountains in southern arizona there are some pretty cool looking blue centipedes that are fairly large. I would probably try to catch one of those for a pet just because of the coloring.

I have so many of the giant red-legged centipedes at my place, I have gotten over my dislike and find them cute and harmless, they remind me of the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland. I wouldn't want to step on one by accident though

Really fun odds and ends post. I like the night snake. We found them in California. Herping here is pretty boring for snakes. Need to take some road trips for different habitats.

Nothis but garter snakes right? I still want to find a smooth greensnake one day but its nearly impossible because of their camouflage.
