Taming the Jumping Spider

avatar

The little jumping spider has emerged from her hiding space in the enclosure.

I have her in the cricket enclosure and when the sun heats up the enclosure she comes out to hunt.

Some changes have happened since I last saw her. She must have molted and now her orange markings have turned white.

This was her a week earlier after getting bloated on eating crickets. She was in the process of making a web sac to molt in. You can see her bright orange marking is still on her back. After the molt it turned white which means she is finally full grown.

I decided to let her out of the cricket enclosure a bit for some exercise.

These daring jumping spiders are pretty tame if you know how to handle them.

pc263837_copy.jpg
You have to let them jump from hand to hand until they get used to you.

Once they are used to you they stop hopping and start crawling more.

They constantly look around for potential prey and for different things to jump on.

Next time I bring her out I'll try and take some video. I was hoping to get her to pose on a poinsetta leaf but she was still too hoppy. Maybe next time I'll also see if she dances in front of a mirror, they react funny to their own reflection.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

Next time it comes out I'll try putting a mirror in front of it to see if it will dance.

Yeah it hopped on my hand when I opened the lid. They are harmless and curious.

Their latin name is Phidippus audax and their common name is bold jumping spider, probably because they are so tame.

I actually really like photographing jumping spider species but they are hard to find where I live.

Most species are very tiny. My balcony tends to have a few show up every year ranging from a zebra striped looking species to these bold ones. If I could only find a male to try and pair up with the one I have now it would be cool to try and macro the tiny spiderlings.

Yes, sometimes what I find is small in size and maybe it will take a little extra effort to be able to get maximum photos

Plus they like to jump around everywhere. To tame them down a bit let them jump from hand to hand for a while then they will start getting used to you and crawl more slowly to give you just enough time to take a shot. Also feeding them keeps them still in one area for a while.

Thanks @ewkaw I'm sure the spider is ready for spring to return so she can go back to guarding the tomato plant on my balcony lol.

If you ever want to get a spider pet that will last longer than two years I recommend tarantulas. They can live up to 35 years, but they are kind of dull compared to jumping spiders. But what they lack in personality they make up in interesting colors and size.

I wasn't able to get it to pose on a leaf for me but it finally stayed still on my finger for a little while.

I should give her a choice between some different types of foods to see which one she picks.
