Sublime Sunday - Council Rocks
Here is a place inhabited by native Americans over a thousand years ago.
Huge boulders make natural shelters and evidence of various tribes is still evident.
These stones were used to grind various seeds, beans and corn if they had any.
The grinding holes are all over the place but all the utensils have ended up in museums.
This area is called Council Rocks and it is often listed as the place where Cochise negotiated a peace deal with General Howard in 1872 (though the real meeting place is elsewhere).
Many petroglyphs are left over here from the Mogollon. I suspect maybe these are similar to the water spirits that the mound builders make in Wisconsin.
High up on this stone there are human figures very faded. I suspect they made a scaffolding of some kind to get up there to paint them.
The zig zag lines are speculated to represent rivers or water. There are some natural springs and rivers here in the mountains as well but who knows what the environment was like 1000 years ago here.
And quite a mix of rivers, humans and spirals on this rock. I suspect the spiral has to do with the sun.
Another spiral but part of it has really faded with the weather.
This little guy appears to have a headdress of some kind. Or maybe ancient aliens is correct in assuming the strange humanoids are from another planet.
At first glance I thought these zig zags represented snakes as many snakes also inhabit these rocks.
Some of these petroglyphs might have been added by Apache's a few hundred years ago. Only a historian can speculate who made these ancient drawings and what they meant to the people.
That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
Beautiful photographs. Excellent.
Thanks for looking :-)
Cool place. I like to stand and try to get a feel for places like this. Imagine all the people that have been there before... Petroglyphs take this to another level. Trying to understand what the ancients were communicating.
It used to be a kind of secret place only locals knew about but they finally put a little sign there this last time I went there. The other secret place is the actual location where Cochise made a peace deal, much harder to find but without any petroglyphs. Thankfully the dirt road out there is so obscure not many people can even get there to cause vandalism.
!!!!
There is a place in Kansas called Council Grove supposedly the first place the US negotiated a treaty for right-of-way through Indian lands for the Santa Fe Trail with the Osage.
Yeah the vandalism is rough around there, people spray painting rocks and whatnot. Metheads with paint cans can't be underestimated in the damage they can do. I haven't been to Kansas since I was a kid. Next time we do a road trip I'll look up the council grove.
