My Pet Tarantulas
My cobalt blue spider decided to come out of her burrow today so I was able to get a few shots of her.
I took a couple shots of her with the flash.
Very cobalt blue looking.
In normal light she looks more purple and gray.
My other tarantula was also out climbing around on the glass of her enclosure. You can really see her fangs here.
Here is a skeleton knee tarantula that I saw at the pet store while buying crickets for my two tarantulas at home. These extra hairy tarantulas can be trained to be handled because they use their hairs to detect what is prey and what is food so they don't bite you. Back home I can handle my Chilean Rose Hair but not my Cobalt Blue because the Cobalt has shorter hairs. She will bite anything that gets near her lol.
Here is another tarantula at the pet store. I think this is also a Chilean Rose with more of a red variation compared to mine. Tarantula breeders actually can create unique color variations but it is a tricky process because the females often eat the males, so if you have a nicely colored male and female there is a chance they will kill each other and you will need to wait until a different batch of spiderlings grow up to repeat the process again.
Here is an Arizona Blonde tarantula. As these are so hairy they are also able to be trained for handling. I actually grew up in Arizona and used to catch these guys after the monsoon rains would flood them out of their burrows. Now over here they are for sale for a good $60.
I used to also see these giant desert scorpions aka Hadrurus arizonensis in Arizona all the time. In college I even had an apartment infested with them lol. Now here in the pet store you can get them for $15, if only back then I had known I could sell them for $15 a piece I would have been able to pay for a few classes in college.
Here is a usual sight at pet stores the emperor scorpion. These are huge land lobster looking scorpions and they are generally pretty docile and their poison is weak. They usually just take down their prey with their claws. One of these days I might get one to keep company with my fat whip scorpion Carl the Vinegaroon.
Carl the vinegaroon is pretty shy. He just ate a ton of crickets and is super fat. These guys were also common in Arizona and I had to plunk down $20 bucks for him over here lol. You can handle these guys but they do sometimes squirt you with acetic acid (vinegar) to deter you from handling them. Carl is used to being handled and never sprays. In general these spider and scorpion pets are very easy to keep and like to just sit in their burrows conserving energy. They only need to be fed around twice a month and spray misted with water once a week. Super easy pets.
Yay! 🤗

Yikes! If I have to face these creepy crawlies every day, I would be a real mess. 😊
They are like pet rocks they hardly do anything but walk around slowly sort of sloth like. But when the blue spider thinks there is food she can get real fast.
Don't they bite or sting? I thought they were poisonous.
Yeah they can all bite/sting but they usually only do that if they think you are food. The hairy ones have better sensors to detect if you are too big to eat. Training them to be handled has to start early on.
Thanks for the explanation. I guess you are knowledgeable about them. Have fun.
Two of my absolute favourites, spiders and scorpions. That cobalt blue spider you have is incredible. Loved the colour change with different light spectrums. Interesting to learn how hair makes a difference in terms of handling. All of them are beautiful. Great photos.
Yeah the cobalt is a bit more aggressive too compared to other tarantulas. I've seen baboon tarantulas more aggressive though.
Fascinating. I just looked up baboon tarantulas. I don't think I'd want those fangs stuck in me, but so beautiful. I saw several different kinds. I didn't realize there was such a spectrum of colours.
Yeah and people are crossbreading them to get stranger and stranger brighter colors. Those fangs can actually bite into the bone if they get your finger. I prefer the docile tarantulas just to be safe.
So they aren't naturally those colours, that's all from breeding? I took a good look at those fangs and I can see exactly what you mean about going into a finger bone.
That cobalt is lovely! Good thing I like spiders....
The next spider I want is a green bottle blue or possibly a Bolivian Dwarf Tiger tarantula, they are about the size of a wolf spider and they have really interesting stripes with a heart on their back.
Green bottle blue, that sounds interesting!
They are really amazing looking and since they are hairy they aren't aggressive https://www.flickr.com/photos/kimistall/2679619525
The only problem with them is they produce the most web of any tarantula so they will web up their whole enclosure and you can't even see them through all the webs.
You have some amazing spiders and know how to care for them. Pretty blue cobalt one.
They are a super easy pet, great if you have to travel a lot. they only eat a couple times a month and don't really need much water. But in terms of being interesting other than how they look they are kind of boring until they accidentally get misted by the water bottle lol.
Your knowledge with these insects is incredible!!!, personally I am a little afraid of scorpions, but spiders are beautiful!
Yeah I've been stung by scorpions before, their sting is about as bad as a bee sting.
wow.
I saw this spider again in your post.
Cool.
This time I showed more of the blue spider.
Yeah, that looks really cool.
Beautiful! Our scorpions look so different to yours, many are highly venomous parabuthids and in general they aren't hairy
There is one really poisonous scorpi over here called the bark scorpion, they are super tiny though and generally only harm the elderly or Children based on the venom dosage. Most adults just get a painful bite. My cousin was bitten by one and he said it just felt like a wasp sting.
Muchas gracias por permitirme disfrutar de las excelentes imágenes de estos especímenes. aliriera
Gracias :-)
I’ve never seen a blue tarantula, it’s beautiful. The last one looks really scary to me! :v But I’m glad you take care of them with such love. Regards :)
There are actually quite a few different blue tarantulas, there's my cobalt blue, green bottle blue, blue baboons etc. They are in all sizes and colors. There is a really fancy Ornamental Tree Tarantula that is blue and gold latin name Poecilotheria metallica https://beyondthetreat.com/poecilotheria-metallica/
Fascinating 💙 Yep this other one is extremely fancy. Maybe the most elegant spider I’ve seen!
