Mushroom Monday - Honeys and More

Here are a few finds from the forest for this #mushroommonday

Here is a trio of Armillaria mellea aka honey mushrooms.

I tend to find these fruiting in fall and they are considered a good edible when parboiled and cooked thoroughly. If not cooked fully it will give you a laxative effect or a stomach ache.

The stems are way too tough to eat so only the caps can be harvested. Another cool thing about these mushrooms is that they are bioluminescent. If you set your camera to a long exposure in pitch black the gills will glow green.

Here is a somewhat boring looking polypore from the top.

Once I flipped it over it became really interesting. Quite an interesting pattern of pores from what I was expecting to be a smooth surface.

At first I thought this was maze gilled polypore but this pattern is to intricate for that. The closest thing that this could be is Daedaleopsis confragosa, so far there isn't much information on whether or not they have any medicinal qualities.

I found a dead tree infested with these tiny little mushrooms that kind of resemble oyster mushrooms.

They could sort of be mistaken for oysters at a smaller age but these guys are too small and they have a fan like shape.

Once you flip them over you can see how the gills don't run down the stem hence they are not a true oyster mushroom. These are in the family Crepidotus. I suspect this one to be Crepidotus stipitatus as it has a similar color and a slight stem. These guys are not edible and some can be poisonous.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

Happy #mushroommonday! Nice finds. My yard was full of mushrooms when I mowed this weekend. I need to get out in the woods and look around.

I wonder if you had a ton of meadow mushrooms in the yard... were they big?

There's a lot of wood buried around my yard. One place there are big yellow ones. There are some big white ones. There are a couple of clusters of pretty brown ones. They will come back quickly. I'll get some photos.

Hopefully I'll see alot more this fall season. Some of the best edible ones come out in fall.
