Mushroom Monday - Bolete Finds
Here are some bolete finds for this #mushroommonday
Look at this huge reddish and yellow bolete.
The cap was quite cracked with age. I would imagine it was bright red the day before.
I took a pinch test and it instantly stained blue. Given the size and color I suspect this is Boletus miniato-pallescens. It is listed as a good edible but boletes that stain blue tend to need a good cooking and many staining boletes tend to cause stomache aches. There was only one so I left it.
Look at these big brown boletes.
These look a bit dried out. I suspect they might have been a bit more pink when they were fresh.
Its kind of hard to see the pink on the cap but this one helped me get an ID.
The final test was to see if it stained. I pinched a bit off and there was no staining. Next I did a tiny nibble taste test and it was not bitter. Because of the pink color there was a chance it was a bitter bolete, instead it tasted quite good so I'm fairly confident its a slightly dried out Boletus separans aka lilac bolete a choice edible almost as good as the king bolete.
Now for a tiny spindly red bolete.
I picked it and noticed super bright yellow pores with a skinny stem.
I pinched it for a stain test and it stained slowly to a dark blue. Given its size and color I'm guessing it is another Boletus miniato-pallescens. Some people list it as edible but to make a good meal would require harvesting alot of these little guys.
This one has a plain tan cap and is quite tiny with no staining.
The pores are white. I think it might be a tiny chessnut bolete. These are edible as well but I only found a few tiny ones, not enough for a meal.
Boletes are generally edible if the don't stain and aren't bitter with a taste test. They all need to be thoroughly cooked to avoid stomache aches. Many other staining boletes are edible as well but I usually don't take a chance with them.
A very extraordinary mushroom I am very happy to see it
Boletes are a bit tricky to identify and its great when you can find one that is edible.
Very beautiful mushroom I am very interested to see it
The bicolir boletes can be quite beautiful with their bright colors. The edible ones tend to be more brown and plain looking.
Charming shames and meaty textures. I miss meeting those boleto. ☘️ Have a !PIZZA.
The lilac boletes are great almost as good as boletus edulis, the other red guys have a bit too much of the after taste of blue cheese.
