Market Friday - Antiques in Galena

Here are some more #marketfriday images from my trip to Galena.

Normally we would be hiking in the hills around Galena but the bad weather made us go into the downtown area to keep out of the rain.

20220430_114514_copy.jpg
This area is famous for antiques. Quite a few of the shops are full of old junk errr I mean antiques lol.

20220430_114758_copy.jpg
Where else can you find the original Macgyver pocket knife?

20220430_114613_copy.jpg
Or if you need to sample some of yesteryear's records antique stores are great for this.

20220430_115704_copy.jpg
Some construction was going on, this was a hilarious sign outside one of the shops as they were using scaffolding to support some repairs on the entry.

20220430_114702_copy.jpg
Just what I've always needed. A strange dancing driftwood root. Perhaps it can be mounted to the wall and function as a jacket hanger. Right now it is a strange sort of lamp...

20220430_115924_copy.jpg
This is more my speed. Some cigar box guitars and amps made from oil cans, leftover wood and of course old cigar boxes. These builds were only good for slide guitar as the action was way to high for fretting.

20220430_120123_copy.jpg
Pottery is quite popular around here as well. This is some new stuff.

20220430_114446_copy.jpg
And here is some antique pottery.

20220430_114343_copy.jpg
Now for a strange looking wood panel lol.

20220430_114551_copy.jpg
I'm not sure what sort of creature this driftwood corkscrew handle looks like. Maybe a screaming newt?

20220430_114901_copy.jpg
Now for some old barrel lids. Perfect for your basement bar theming.

That's enough antiques for today, thanks for looking :-)

A good place to get some vintage stuff. Not seen an antique shop here but I'm sure there could be some in Ghana

Basically anything item that is over 50 years old could be considered antique.

the original Macgyver pocket knife?

Is being long I see a pocket knife, I remember buying it when I was twelve years old and be using it personally to peel orange.

I used to collect them when I was a kid. Perfect for can opening, or whittling a random piece of driftwood.

I'm sure they had to put that sign up because there are quite a few bars in town, some inebriated people could easily think its time for poledancing lol.

If you have to wander the shops Galena is the best place to do it! Many of my childhood days were spent there before it became a tourist mecca.

Yeah I visited there a good 15 years ago and it wasn't quite as packed as it is now. During the covid lockdowns it was completely flooded with tourists probably by everying in Chicago lol.

My grandfather worked over there for a couple years in the late 1950s putting in the city sewer system. (quite a project in those hills) and my dad built the dike and put in the flood gates in the 60s.

I was admiring the bricks that controlled the water into the river, must have been a feat to build in such hilly terrain.

Nice post. You really get a feel for the eclectic nature of antique shops in middle America from your photos.

Have you heard of meow wolf? I would rebrand these antique stores in that sort of flavor where its a crazy immersive environment with random antiques that send you on crazy storylines. Then just add an AR overlay as you walk through, it could be pretty trippy.

I have now. Yeah I agree. Truth is stranger than fiction. You don't have to make this stuff up. Use the real thing to kick off the imagination and build the experience.

Browsing through the antiques, you are bound to come across something interesting. That sign is very hilarious and creative.

Oh, the Franocoma pottery! My MIL gave me boxes of it and I thought it was a little ugly. Now I feel pretty bad. I like pottery, but, not that color. I think it was her that gave me the driftwood corkscrew. They live out in California where there are all sorts of unique-looking carvings and pottery.

Galena is just the sort of town that gives you pleasure, rain or shine. LOL Well, many people love shopping and tinkering through antique/second-hand shops. Those old records probably had a place in the house I grew up in. My parents had a real collection! Well, come to think of it, I still have my collection. It was easier to carry around all these years than to find a place that would take them.

Thow them away you say??? No way! :)

This was another delightful post by you. I am always happy to see you joining! Thank you so much!

You never know what might end up spiking in value. I wonder if the green pottery set is rare these days?

I was just looking it up... :) You just never know, that is true. I have seen some things that have gone up in price and I have to wonder... why? But, no longer ask that question.
