Feathered Friday - The Hawks Emerge

The hawks have emerged from their nest for this #featheredfriday by @melinda010100

My wife and I were walking the baby in the stroller and my wife noticed this hawk right in front of me. I get bird blindness when they are sitting in obvious places.

I have seen the parent hawks up on a school nearby nesting in the parapets. This one is still quite small and appears to be a juvenile. It was also quite tame just sitting there for photos.

Juvenile hawks can be tricky to ID my guess is that this one is either a juvenile Cooper's hawk or possibly a juvenile Sharp-shinned hawk. I mostly see Cooper's hawks around here but I can't really tell at this point.

Meanwhile nearby at the lake the ducks are still sitting on their eggs. I'm not sure what sort of hair this one managed to find for use as a nest. Maybe its some kind of domesticated dog hair that it found after one got combed out by the neighbor.

The other duck is still sitting on its eggs in the old driveway pillar. Soon there will be lots of baby ducklings around for the juvenile hawks to practice catching.

Meanwhile the geese should be safe from the hawks as their goslings are getting quite big now. I think the parent hawks managed to pick off quite a few earlier this spring as these older goose families started out with seven each and now there are only five left.

There is a younger family of geese by the lake too. My neighbor actually had to rescue these ones off her balcony as they nested in her planter. It was quite an ordeal to collect them without the parents attacking then bring them down to the parents and walk them to the lake.

They started out with seven but one got picked off by something, possibly the hawks or maybe a fox.

They are growing exponentially by the day. Constantly mowing the lawn by the lake.

One of the side effects of geese by the lake is they really poop up the sidewalk. Its a bit of a feat to dodge goose poop with a baby stroller lol. So far the geese don't seem to care about humans walking by but the parents attack anyone who is walking a dog. Maybe I can catch a photo of this behavior on my next walk lol. Seeing a poodle nearly get bitten by an angry goose would be an epic shot.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

Great shots of the hawk 👍 I feel a little animosity towards poodles in that last comment 🤔😂

Its because I noticed a standard poodle almost get bitten on my last walk but missed the shot by a second. The silly thing doesn't learn its lesson, now I see the owner take a wide birth around the geese everytime she walks the dog.

I was lucky my wife spotted it, it was right in front of me and I was looking high up in the trees for birds.
