Feathered Friday - Sightings of the Week
Here are some of this week's sightings for this #featheredfriday
I finally got a clear shot of a brown creeper. They aren't too uncommon around here but they are small and dodgy.
Half the battle is spotting them. They are quite camouflage as they creep up the trees.
The next hurdle is trying to get a focused shot of them. They do a sort of shuffle up the tree in a robotic way.
Most of the time I catch a shot of them mid-shuffle. They will sit still for about a second then scurry about a foot up the tree to look for tiny insects in the next sector.
Now it is moving in for the kill, probably some kind of microscopic ant or something.
Tree creepers are basically the same size as a nuthatch. But they are much more shy and active.
Here is a red-bellied woodpecker. You can see its red belly as it feeds a baby in a tree hollow.
I tried squeeking at it hoping to get it to look at the camera. Instead it just flew away.
Everywhere you look there are robins hanging around. I use these guys as camera setting testers.
As my wife was driving in the car I noticed a redtail hawk land in a tree. I did my best at sniping the shot. Sadly traffic was too busy to get out for a clearer shot. Even in the car you can see it is skeptical of me with the camera. Odds are if I had gotten out it would have flown off instantly anyway.
That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
Tree creepers are so hard to spot, let alone to photograph. Your shots are brilliant. I wish I couls see again the creeper, i had the pleasure/luck to spot it few times.
I just kind of stand still in the forest for a couple minutes looking for movement on the sides of trees. Eventually one will sneak into view. I'll have to read up on what in the world they are eating. Some kind of microscopic crawling bugs.
!!! nice capture
I've always thought it should be called red headed or even red butt lol belly seems a stretch. I did find on google there is a red headed woodpecker that is different and not in Vermont 🙁
I have seen the red headed woodpeckers here too but very rarely and I have no good photos of them. I think they are a bit more common farther north. Given the red bellied woodpecker's call I would opt to name them dog's chew toy.
Very nice shots !
Thanks, now is the perfect time to go out for birds when all the leaves aren't out yet to hide them.
Beautiful pictures, I especially like the treecreeper and the hawk.
Despite the creepers' split second of inactivity, you snapped off some really good ones.
The first time I saw a Red-bellied WP, (Red Skeleton) that's how we refer to them, I couldn't understand why they didn't name the bird a red-mame WP. Your photo of the bird feeding the youngsters gives you a great view of the red underbelly, great pic.
I don't know how many times I've seen a bird while traveling. Tuff to stop on a busy road. 😁
