Feathered Friday - Sightings of the Week

Here are some more bird sightings of the week for #featheredfriday by @melinda010100

The indigo buntings are out in force around here. They have a loud song and are easy to locate but they are quite small. Its still difficult to get good pictures of them even though they don't tend to fly away.

Meanwhile the mourning doves are super tame and large. These two were no problem photographing other than having to pick my focal point leaving the one on the left blurry.

Here's a testing robin looking quite proud on a stump.

And another robin pulling some kind of larvae out of the ground.

Here's a bit of a rare sight. I managed to find the pie billed grebe family and the mom is bringing a fish to them.

Far off in the distance I also saw a mergancer. It's probably a red breasted mergancer judging by the hairdoo in the silhouette.

The Canadian geese by the lake are raising their families and the goslings are growing quickly. They basically eat all day non-stop.

Here's a great white heron perching on his favorite boulder in the lake.

Now it took off to check the perimeter of the lake for a good fishing spot.

The sun kind of blew out the details as he flew by a second time. Quite tricky getting feather details on such a huge white bird.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

Its getting tricker to spot the birds in the trees now that they are fully filled out.

Yeah, here too. But I sure like the shades of green...

Just the right time to go out and enjoy the fresh new greens. In a couple more weeks we'll be contending with mosquitoes on our walks.

I wish I could have gotten closer shots of the pie billed grebe babies. Next time I have to wade out there like a fly fisherman for photos.

Hahaha that would make cool photos of you wading out there 🤣😂 just joking…
I hope you can get close enough to capture them.🍀

I'd probably trip on an old tree stump underwater then faceplant into the mud and scare off all the grebes.

I had a baby indigo bunting fly right into me once. It was just leaving the nest and learning how to fly when it ran into me. Then the parents came by and were all concerned.

Nice photos. I like the indigo bunting. Based on some quick research looks like they should be around here but I haven't seen them. I did see a redstart and scarlet tanager this week. Pretty birds that aren't around all year.

If you put the merlin bird app on your phone Im sure it would alert you to indigo buntings in the area. Its pretty good at iding birds via just their song.

Got it. And love it. Our problem is we walk the same areas so much. Need to get into different habitats to up the bird sightings count I think. btw there is a nesting pair of loons on our lake 😍 nothing says north woods like the call of a loon.

Yeah the loons remind me of camping in the northwoods of Wisconsin, I still haven't been able to get a shot of one.
