Common Tern Fishing at the Lake
I noticed the common terns fishing at the lake again now that the water level is full.
They have an interesting strategy for fishing, they zoom around the lake high above the water looking down for a fish to dive bomb.
Once they notice the fish they hover in place for a while mid-air to align themselves before a straight down dive bomb.
Zoom ---- splash! they hit the water like a bullet.
They have about a 30% success rate in actually catching a fish. Here's one that emerged out of the water without a fish.
Here's one that was successful. If there are more than one tern at the lake they like to have aerial battles for the fish.
They zoom around with their fish and have to swallow it whole mid-air before another tern steals it.
At first glance they sort of look like a seagull but they have a much larger beak and have a black cap on their head. Their dive bombing fish method is pretty unique as well.
That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
I love the bright orange beak. Sounds kind of like a kestrel - the hovering behavior - but kestrels hunt on land. Cool photos 👍 I'm wondering how big the sample size is for the 30% catch rate statistic 🤔🤣
Maybe I got the unlucky one at the lake. Poor thing was missing quite a few shots. One of these days I'll be able to get a shot of it right before hitting the water.
Nice photo report. Catching them on camera is hard, most of my photos stay blurry!
One of these days I'll be lucky enough to get a clear shot of one closeup emerging from the water with a fish.
Hope so! And when you do, please share it! ;)
It is a great technique and I love how they align themselves and go for it😁
They seem to have to focus both eyes on the fish before striking.
A great way to do it!
Loved seeing the action!
I'll have to bring my video camera next time to get the full sequence in motion.
