COOKING BEANS AND PLANTAIN

Hi everyone!
My name is Abas Brave and I am excited to come in here today. ☺
Here's what I did when I found myself in what I considered a situation and there was no option left for me. 😂

I have four sisters following me. Two of them are married while two are single. Recently, two weeks ago precisely, my sister who was the one that cooks most got married and moved in with her husband. I didn't feel the effect immediately because we still had some food left in the fridge few days after the wedding ceremony.

Yesterday, like some other days, I woke up with a different energy - that I could do anything. I was hit with hunger; everyone in the house was so hungry that morning.

While tidying up that morning, I found a bunch of ripened plantain in a conner of the house. Jokingly I told my mom we should have plantain mixed with beans for breakfast. She immediately responded and asked me to cook it. Well, if this is sounding strange to you, this is one popular meal in my locality and some other major parts of Nigeria as well. ☺

Cooking really isn't what I do often. Well, my parents and siblings think I can't cook. 😂 So I took that to be a challenge and a moment to make a lasting good impression in their minds about my cooking skills. 😂

We are five living together now. So I had to make a meal for that number of people. So I mixed the following;

  • 5 fingers of plantain
  • 4 cups of beans
  • 3 cubes of seasoning
  • 2 small bulbs of onions
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh pepper to taste
  • 2 Dried fishes
  • Red oil (extracted from oil palm) to taste

The beans was preselected, sifted and stored which made the process easier and faster for me.

So I first of all washed the beans with cold water. Then I set the pot on fire, poured the beans into it and parboiled for some minutes. We normally parboil our grains to wash off chemicals that were perhaps used on them during storage by the farmers and or marketers.

I washed and peeled off the plantains and sliced each of them to four pieces which gave me 20 pieces altogether. I then poured them into the boiling pot and stirred to mix up with the beans.

They say plantain contains iron and beans contain protein. So a mix of both is a good diet I guess. 😁

I added other condiments into the pot and left it on a moderated heating level for about 25minutes. I kept checking the pot at intervals to ensure the mix went well. 😁

In about an hour my delicious meal was ready and set for consumption. ☺

This is the only portion I could take. The food was finished up before nightfall.
YUMMY 😋 ☺

Well, I know you might be wondering why I called this a challenge. That's because I normally don't cook and if nobody else does that then I can go hungry untill whenever food is ready. That's a bad habit, I know. So I took up the challenge to cook so to put an end to that bad habit.

I sincerely apologize for not having pictures to show the various steps in preparing this sumptuous meal. My hands were soiled by the various things I used in preparing the meal that I couldn't touch my phone. No one else was there to help me take the pictures. I hope to have pictures when next I cook

THANK YOU FOR READING THROUGH.
