U.S. Modern Commemoratives: 2007 Jamestown Commemorative Silver Dollar

avatar

The United States Congress authorizes the minting of coins that celebrate and honor American people, places, events, and institutions. Such is the case for commemorative coins.

Even though these coins are legal tender, they are not minted for general circulation. Each commemorative coin is produced by the United States Mint in limited quantity and is only available for a limited time.

On December 6, 1606, the journey to Virginia began on three ships: the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery. In 1607, 104 English men and boys arrived in North America to start a settlement. On May 13 they picked Jamestown, Virginia for their settlement, which was named after their King, James I. The settlement became the first permanent English settlement in North America. - A Short History of James Town

The settlement would eventually become the United States.

The colony at Jamestown also produced one of the earliest iconic figures of colonial history. Captain John Smith was one of seven council members identified in sealed orders to govern the new colony. Smith led the settlers through the struggles of a harsh winter, the spread of disease, and the often challenging relationships with the Algonquian Indians. - Jamestown 400th Anniversary

Here is a short video on John Smith, Jamestown and the Roots of America.

The United States Modern Commemorative Coin program began in 1982. Silver coins have been issued corresponding to and equal in specifications of classic circulating silver dollars. I have a long way to go, but here are the ones I shown so far:

Jamestown Commemorative Silver Dollar
The US Botanic Garden Commemarative Silver Dollar
Commemorative Morgan Silver Dollar
Commemorative Peace Silver Dollar
Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar
The Star Spangled Banner Commemorative Silver Dollar
The P.O.W. Commemorative Silver Dollar
The U.S. Capitol Commemorative Silver Dollar
American Buffalo Commemorative Silver Dollar

0.900 silver composition, it is absolutely an artistic and fabulous piece to stack.

If I am not wrong 'P' stands for Philadelphia Mint!?

But I thought these commemorative dollars were minted at West Point!
And the "P" is never used!
Hahaha...
I will look into it!

Yes, it's the only commemorative coin about the town that eventually became the United States... Jamestown.
Interesting, isn't it!

Yea it's quite interesting and I don't think they would let a coin like this be printed now due to the political climate in the US.

"I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day
I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas Day in the morning

And what was in those ships all three
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day?
And what was in those ships all three
On Christmas Day in the morning?..."

A very nice coin @silversaver888, sis! In your history, you mention the Algonquin Natives. I haven't heard that terminology in a while. That was the language the Cherokee people spoke. I am of Cherokee heritage.

I like the shiny! Thanks for sharing and have a love and blessed Sunday!🤗😘💖🌸

You must so proud of your heritage, sis.
The original peoples of the United States.
It must be so good to know your roots.
I don't know my roots.
I was born and raised in Hawaii, while we had properties in San Francisco.
I lived in San Fransisco for many years graduating HS, college, and graduate degree there.
In the meantime, I lost all my family one after another...
All I know is that I have Yorkies, and I'm down to one.
Hugs and kisses, sis 🤗😘💖

I have a picture somewhere, of my Cherokee relatives; I know my great great grandfather was a corporal in the Confederate army; my great grandmother was Cherokee as well. Unfortunately, I don't have names and all of my family is deceased as well, so there is no one to ask. I could try to pursue it through the tribe, but that takes a lot of money from what I understand.

Were your parents Hawaiian? Or, did they move there and were from the States?

I know how hard it is to lose your pet family! Time helps, but I've not found it to completely ease the pain for me. I know you love (loved) your babies! A big hug for you sis!🤗🤗🤗😘💖🌸💐🤗🤗🤗 !LADY

Part of our U.S. History, my friend, I wish it would have been easier that first Winter, and that the Algonquian Indians would have fared better......
