A Weekend in contact with nature at the Utracán Lagoon Natural Reserve.

Today I want to tell you about a place I went last weekend in the company of family and friends.

It is the Utracán Lagoon located in the very center of the province of La Pampa, a provincial tourist site ideal for recreation and to enjoy the outdoors and the wild nature so typical of this territory.

It is located about 90 kms from the provincial capital, Santa Rosa, so it is quite easy to reach, as it is served by all the provincial roads, very well paved and maintained. In less than an hour's drive we arrive at the lagoon. Entrance is free and free of charge.

The lagoon itself has therapeutic properties, since it is a mirror of salty water that can also be used as a spa, and for the practice of various sports activities, among which we can mention canoeing, kayaking, kite surfing and others.

The most beautiful and outstanding feature is the close and permanent contact with a pure and virgin nature where no industrial or commercial establishments of any nature have arrived yet.

Although now, in this part of the hemisphere, we are out of season (here we are in autumn and entering winter) and it starts to get cold, there are always some tourists willing to camp or with campers who venture to Utracán to spend a weekend in absolute tranquility.

At the end of spring and throughout the summer it is very visited by the camping area and a grocery store that operates from November to March where you can buy everything you need -basic necessities- to spend the weekend without having to go anywhere else to shop.

At present the extension of the territory that surrounds the lagoon has increased notably, since the Municipality of General Acha to which it belongs has received a hundred of hectares in gratuitous use on the part of a well-known multinational soybean company that operates in the whole area.

There are a large number of trails, generally very well maintained, where you can take long walks admiring the wild Pampean landscape, among caldenes, jarillas and other typical plant species of the province.

The lagoon has particular characteristics very similar to those that the Epecuén Lagoon had in the last century in the province of Buenos Aires, before the enormous flood of the eighties that caused the destruction of the town and the transformation of the whole lagoon into an enormous mirror of water that destroyed fields, houses, animals, causing enormous damages to the regional economy.

The Utracán Lagoon is a closed lagoon, since it is not connected to any river, lake or internal sea. It is salty, hence its therapeutic properties, especially for rheumatism, to such an extent that even people who cannot swim can float without difficulty.

However, as soon as you get out of the water, you must take a shower to prevent the salt from hardening on your skin. Surrounding the lagoon there is a very nice beach although it is not too big, ideal for the little ones to play while the parents enjoy the camping area in the shade of the trees, while they prepare a delicious asado, the traditional Argentinean barbecue.

Due to the absence of mountains, the sun hits the peak directly, so it is ideal for sunbathing, especially for those fans of tanned skin.

To such an extent is integrated the sense of tranquility, silence and close contact with nature, that despite being a place away from everything, it is not allowed to make annoying noises or enter with pets.

To enjoy nature to the fullest, some sacrifices must also be made.
