The Media should be more fair and balanced in stories on Elon Musk

Elon Musk, Twitter and the Media

  • While I understand there's a learning curve for Elon Musk in his quest to run Twitter, and being human he will make mistakes and possibly even change his mind...
  • I know some will find this shocking, and they will ask; Who does he think he is, to change his mind about something after learning more about it?
  • LOL :)
  • But honestly, I don't think I am a Fanboy of Elon's just someone trying to be fair, and I think he definately is being held up to the light and scrutinized pretty heavily, and carefully, and he is a human after all. (not an AI LOL)
  • The world will just have to learn to accept the truth, whenever a human is in charge, mistakes will be made, and biases will be shown..
  • These are human characteristics, so we all should expect these things to happen. If we were in charge, I think many of us would make the same mistakes.

Journalist

  • My advice to journalists: I know your doing what you think is your job, but always pointing out the bad, and never the good, doesn't make people like you, and more importantly it doesn’t look fair and balanced.
  • And isn’t Fair and Balanced the Goal?

A Michigan Sandwich

  • Michigan is a state, in the Midwest Region of the United States of America.
  • And people in the MidWest are often mocked for their very proper pronunciation of words and what others view as excessive politeness.
  • So you could say politeness is part of the culture of the Midwest just like food is a part of many cultures.
  • An interesting part of this culture is that when Midwesterners give people negative feedback, they make it a point to give them positive feedback also.
  • So for those of you who have never heard of a sandwich, it is two pieces of bread with something in between, like meat.
  • So in a conversational sense a sandwich is three things you say to a person.
  • So in keeping with our topic of politeness and combining it with our interest in being fair a Michigan Sandwich is three topics, one positive thing to say about someone, one negative thing, and a then a second positive thing.
  • So the Take Home Lesson here for journalists is say something positive about Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, then something negative, and then something positive.
  • I think articles written according to this formula would be viewed as more fair and balanced.
  • And I think that without this balanced approach journalists just seem negative and biased, and that’s a bad look for a journalist.
  • You May feel that a Michigan Sandwich is excessively polite, but when people think your biased you need to overcompensate to shift perceptions in the opposite direction from bias.
  • And personally positives or nice words don’t make the negative words less negative, they get the persons attention and make them feel you are being fair.
  • Also remember that fair and balanced reporting is interpreted by most of us on the planet as saying what's good and what's bad in terms of facts.

Last words and the last bites of this post..

  • I hope people in journalism start using the Michigan Sandwich to make their stories on Elon Musk and Twitter more Fair and Balanced.
  • It is very important that the words sprinkled on top of the story sandwich aren’t so bitter that we spit it out right away. This will make it easier for your readers to bite into and chew on your stories. This allows us to savor the meat of those stories by chewing on it and digesting it properly in our minds.

Thanks to the media, Elon Musk is rarely seen as a human being like anyone of us. The expectations placed on him are so high that he'll probably fall short on many of them. But I'm positive that Twitter will turn out great with him.

Exactly. He is fallible, but it doesn’t make him evil, or not worthy of fair treatment.
Ha Ha Ha.. I like the second part because it points out that the same people who are critical of him making mistakes seem to also feel he is to smart to make mistakes. Illogical

Lol, indeed. I'm not sure if the MSM can't see the full spectrum or they just want to focus on the part that attracts the most eyeballs.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I read the title and almost fell over laughing. Yeah, right. And they should also report on both sides of a story. Pretty sure they both have an equal chance of happening. Zero. But I'm not cynical. :-)

I agree with you, though. It just doesn't generate the clicks and the clicks are where the money is and the money is what the news organizations are in it for. So, round in circles we go with everyone writing stories for an echo chamber of like-minded individuals so they can all agree and pat each other on the back.

Never expect anything from these mainstream media networks. They are only after their agenda and I doubt they will really bend for anything. They should definitely be less biased but I just don't think it will happen.

I realize we get more narrative and less substance, but I can hope and cajole.
