I still see people writing in comments that…

…it would be great if Hive had decentralized finance here, and smart contracts.

The truth is Hive was born with Smart Contracts, which were meant to enable decentralized finance, and they did….

  • Decentralized Finance is simply put… the intersection of finance and decentralized blockchains which allow permissionless investments in financial tools allowing humans to make money
  • You don’t need the bank’s permission, the brokerage’s permission, or your financial advisor’s permission…
  • You just need the ability to learn it, or have someone explain it to you.

Closing thoughts

  • I think most of us knew we were way ahead in terms of the future of social media on Hive.

  • But not everyone realizes that Hive was ahead of it’s time with Smart Contracts enabling decentralized finance primitives, and I use that term not in the anthropological sense, but in the cryptocurrency sense.. meaning First

  • We have already been enjoying DeFi here at a certain level, and we have a bridge or bridges to Binance smart chain and all the DeFi projects there, through Cubfinance and Splinterlands.

While everything has been transparent, I don't think we really had the Defi aspect before they added interest into HBD (recent). Then again, I am not sure if the natural inflation from the token counts as a smart contract.

You are right, the code allows the witnesses to set the interest rate, so it has been variable, and very low until recently, so no one talked about.

Hive is Definitely ahead of many of it's competitors in code development, fast, low cost transactions, and other aspects of the move of social media to the blockchain.
