#saturdaysavers | Primary Hive Goals for 2023

There may be trouble ahead ...

Environment

2022 was a tricky year all round, following two previous difficult years. A global recession is expected (or already started depending on your point of view). Locally (UK), there is increasing inflation, a shrinking economy and a weak government.

Supply chain problems and labour market shortages are set to continue, due to global, European and UK challenges. Britain lost 600,000 people from the labour market due to early retirement or long-term sickness, exacerbated by Brexit removing EU economic migrants. China is in disarray following the decision to remove all COVID restrictions with immediate effect. The war in Ukraine continues, although there have started to be proposals for peace talks.

On the plus side, the UK has strong public sector union action with the potential combined benefits of maintaining incomes, protecting public services and, crucially, forcing a weak government to focus. Michael Gove, love him or hate him, is at the Department of Housing, Levelling Up and Communities (DHLUC) and otherwise maintaining a not my circus, not my monkeys stance. Some of our regional Mayors have progressive ideas. We've also seen global wholesale gas and oil prices drop.

Crypto-wise, it's not been a great year either - again depending on your point of view. Bitcoin has been crashing around, and there were major scandals with Luna, Celsius and FTX. On the one hand, this is all bad news for crypto, on the other hand, poor actors are being removed and lower points of entry mean increased access for more people.

In the UK, 2023 is expected to be much the same as 2022, which is pretty harsh at the moment, especially for the poorest and most disadvantaged, although some forecasters are predicting that the recession will be shallower than previously expected, with improved conditions in the second half of the year. In the crypto-verse, I expect to see prices continuing to fall until sometime in 2024 and then start to increase in 2025. This is a great time for accumulation.

Personal Goals

I'm continuing to work, probably for another 24-36 months, but with gradually reducing hours during that time. We've just submitted for a three year project which, if successful, will create major change and the work that I do will be in really great shape to handover to someone else (we'll still get there without the additional funding, but more slowly).

I've started a long term creative project which will run alongside paid work and, as I reduce working hours, I will spend more time on this, aiming to start a masters in fine art in the next two or three years. I'm also working towards getting my house upgraded in the next twelve months: plans and specifications are ready and builders are being invited to tender this week. The final timetable will depend on when the builder is able to do it.

In terms of exposure, I've reduced debt and built an emergency fund over the past two years. The work on the house is a form of future proofing: creating a house which is ready for the next twenty years, comfortable to live in, and adapted for environmental changes ie more efficient energy use, passive heating and cooling, and increased shading, especially at the front of the house.

Crypto Goals

I aim to achieve 100,000 HIVE POWER over the next twelve months with the following ambitions:

  • continue to vote as an Orca.
  • delegate the remainder to other projects and enterprises that enhance Hive.
  • build Saturday Savers Club to support the EDS savings and income token.
  • draw an income from HIVE as prices start to rise in 2024-2025.

Options for Reaching 100k HP

I looked at several options for increasing HIVE POWER, taking into account passive income (roughly 300 HIVE a month over the year) and assuming 12% for combined curation and inflation.

OptionDeposit pcmDeposit paInterest paTotal HP
1. Maintain current activity3674,4189,76289,175
2. Increase posting5006,0009,85390,853
3. Increase posting + DCA122114,65510,345100,000
4. Maintain + DCA36713,55910,92299,482

I used a compound interest calculator to forecast year end totals.

I'm going for Option 4 - maintaining my current posting activity (fits with my life-style and goals) and DCA-ing HIVE through the year, as early as possible. This will depend on the price of HIVE - I'll accumulate a lot faster if the price drops. I've not calculated everything into this - for example, passive income streams will continue to increase. However, it gives me a starting place.

Looking Ahead to 2024

For fun, I looked at what 2024 might look like, when I've achieved my 100,000HP:

That will be nice!

Good heavens, I was ready to string myself up after reading the first section! Happy new year Shani :-)

But...

Doing a Masters in Fine Art will be wonderful and every success with that, partaking in a little formal education at our advanced years is wonderful when there's no pressure and you do it simply for the joy.

As for shading the house to save energy...

Something I learned about recently with building the new house and having to remove some trees. The house is so hot and we've had to plant new trees to eventually reduce the direct sunlight. Luckily things grow so quickly here.

I'm sorry you're going to work, I was looking forward to your retirement stories but do I sense you're quite happy to keep going for longer?

Either way, have a wonderful year and don't let the bastards grind you down ;-)

Stay safe , happy and healthy :-)

It's all about resilience, isn't it? One of the reasons I'm so mad passionate about Saturday Savers Club and helping people to build-in resilience. It's been great this year to see savers save in the face of adversity and be in a better place at the end of it.

Also better to call it how it is, I think? And then set plans accordingly.

I'm looking forward to the masters. I don't think it's going to be easy, but I'll be building my resilience in that area over the next two years. Working is okay if you can negotiate the right deal and there are some merits, especially when you're planning a big expense like the house 😁.

we've had to plant new trees to eventually reduce the direct sunlight.

We're very lucky here as there are a number of trees with TPOs, so there is some shade in the garden for part of the day, but it doesn't quite reach the house. I think I've decided now to leave the front elevation pretty much as it is for this phase and then do all the changes to the front of the house at the same time. This will include a larger window downstairs, external shades to upper and lower windows (with cranks to raise and lower them). The upper floor has cladding and I'm thinking to remove all of that, have the whole front rendered and painted in a light colour. And then pretty up the balcony 😍.

The way the house is designed, plus a lean-to that was added at some stage, means there is a shaded area at the back that is several (maybe 10?) degrees cooler in the summer; plus the design creates passive air conditioning through the house during the night with the right arrangement of doors and windows left open.

I'd still like to get a wild dipping pool in the front, but I'm not sure there would be the necessary access for a digger unless the front hedge (privacy/shade) is removed. Although I guess that would re-grow over time?

Either way, have a wonderful year and don't let the bastards grind you down ;-)

And to you, too, great to know you 😍

Those sounds like some great plans and that looks good for once your reach the magic 100k. Saving and building during the tough times will hopefully pay off well down the line.

Thank you, I like having a plan. I find it easier when the price is low. The learning for me will be about having a plan for selling - when to start, how much to sell etc. I suspect that it will be easier to accumulate over the coming year or so.

Good luck. Those are some ambitious goals and I hope everything goes according to plan for you. 100k HP seems like a far out goal and it will be a long time till I reach anywhere close to that.

Thank you 😍

It's taken me a while but steadily and slowly we'll get there.

Good luck with your savings plans.

The country is in a right old state, although the only positive I have found is that since Brexit the food has got so much tastier.
I think people forget there is a war going on, and that includes most cryptoheads!
Like you I can prices dropping and certainly not rising for months if not a year or 2 or 3. Who knows!
Great goals and you will be hitting that 100k soon!
Thanks for all you are doing, and I am so glad to have found you and the club!
Happy New Year😊

I saw someone else predicting two years, so a good timescale to work to.

Glad to have you with us @tengolotodo 😍
